  1. such a shame about the lack of external manual. it would cost nothing to add support for it in the firmware, and would make it more viable to more players, even jazz organists. although you can comp one handed, or rip a solo on the 49, you can't play both hands bass and comp, at the same time.

     

    i guess you could midi up an external 61 keyboard and use it instead of the 49, but then it's a useless form factor and might as well have been a desktop sound module format.

  2. haha, figured out a real nice "hack"!

     

    Electro is completely unrealistic in that you can put perc on the lower manual...

     

    you can see where we're going here.

     

    so external keyboard controlling lower manual. but just "pretend" that it is upper and set up drawbars, chorus, perc accordingly. for the upper manual, set up the typical bass+comp drawbars.

     

    good to go! dream come true, been trying to nail this for years!

     

    hopefully this thread may help others.

  3. i'm no midi expert, but some of you may be.

     

    i have a hunch this could be solved with MIDI trickery and a MIDI merge device.

     

    For example,

    + Set LOCAL OFF on the Electro

    + Connect Electro MIDI OUT to MIDI IN on merge box

    + Connect upper manual MIDI OUT to MIDI IN on merge box

    + Connect MIDI OUT of merge box to MIDI IN on Electro

    + Now configure the merge box so that all the MIDI channels are correct for upper and lower manual

     

    It should work, right?

    My Electro allows for connection of external midi keyboard for control of lower manual.

    But I would prefer to use the Electro keyboard for lower manual, and external for upper.

    My reasoning, the Electro keybed is the superior 61 waterfall action, and I spend most time on lower.

    For the upper manual, any old 49 midi keyboard controller will do just fine.

     

    However, I don't think this is possible. Is there a trick to solve this?

     

    Seems to be same issue on most clonewheels sadly.

    perhaps better to think of it as a desktop organ module with drawbars and all the controls., comes with a bonus 4 octave keyboard that is sufficient and convenient for casual players wanting some organ tones for comping.

    for the serious organists, you can always midi it up, just like you would with a hammond sound module.

    ps. were there not many very popular tonewheel hammonds with 4 octave manuals,  albeit two of them?

    midi it up for a 61 key lower manual.

    i'm holding out for M-DUO, the compact dual 61 manual version.  hammond don't currently offer a reasonably affordable double manual organ. the one they have has too many useless bells and whistles if you only want a hammond organ.

  7. i realise using a robot is one way to get consistent velocity layers.

     

    But the technique that a skilled pianist uses to strike the keys affects the tone, surely? (only on an acoustic, obviously)

     

    Or is that just a myth? Perhaps a mechanical machine with some motors, rubber and a hammer can extract the same quality of tone as Vladimir Horowitz? :)

     

    spitfire iirc, amongst others, make a big deal about who the human player is that they used when recording the samples.

  8. very interesting comment above, although the tech details were above my pay grade!

     

    we should expect new montage to cost more than the 2016 model.  everything is more expensive now, synths too, especially synths actually.

     

    i find it slightly amusing all this hype, buzz and excitement surrounding possible inclusion of AN1x.  I had the PLG-AN board which I used in several Yamaha keyboards and synths back in the day.  It was ok and sounded good but nothing remarkable, and this was 30 years ago! It was based on a prophet 5 architecture iirc, and sounded about as good as the NI Pro-52 or the NL2 which were hot at the time.

     

    But not in this day and age.

     

    Maybe AN1X will have some tricks, otherwise it's not that exciting really, compared to what software synths are doing.

     

    The current Montage does great analog tones using AWM2 engine.

  9. appreciate all the help and even some of the audio examples!

    I'm still not convinced though!  seems to be extra complexity just for the sake of it. the increased flexibility is outweighed by the inconvenience of having to make changes twice.

    the old juno and many other synths could do great strings & brass sounds with a single env.

    will study your responses and see if there is an interesting angle for a video topic in here somewhere.

  10. thanks for helping me.  also confused with workflow, would one begin with the amp env and then adjust the filter env?  if the amp env is all off, then filter env has no effect, and vice versa.

    would you for example, set the amp env to an organ shape 0-0-10-0 and then carve out the right filter env, then dial in the amp env?

    you can see why this might be confusing...  on the juno I never have to worry about this.

  11. Hi ladies, gents.

     

    Doing some research for a video topic.

     

    Love my JUNO, got one envelope which I use to modulate and sculpt both the amp level and filter cutoff. Quick and easy, sounds great, nothing left to be desired.

     

    Many other synths, Prophet 5, Omnisphere, even the Roland Cloud Juno have two envelopes, one for amp and one for filter.

     

    I hate it!

     

    Now if I want to adjust the attack, decay, release or whatever, I have to do it twice. Not too annoying on hardware but horrible with mouse on software.

     

    I have never understood the point of this. I'm sure there are some edge cases where you might want different envelope shapes but not for everyday use, and surely not worth all the extra inconvenience?

     

    If I want to adjust the decay, am I supposed to reach for the filter env decay, or the amp env decay?

     

    Total PITA. Yeah, I know I'm exposing myself as a total synthesis noob, but surely it's not just me that doesn't get it?  Been struggling with this for 30 years...

  12. i really enjoyed Joey's lessons and got a lot out of them, as well as tons of inspiration.  i still play the beginner 12 bar jazz blues bass and comp that he teaches early in the course.

    i agree, it's not always broken down for you and you'll need to put in a lot of work yourself.

     

    can highly recommend Tony Monaco school of hammond organ. He publishes mainly zoom recordings of his group lessons, and the skill level is from beginners to quite advanced. it's very interesting to watch and follow the progress of his students and encouraging to see that we all struggle with the same challenges.

     

    Tony is an amazing teacher and there is plenty to learn for keyboard players in general about blues, voicings, music theory, it's not just for the organists.

     

    He offers a free trial to watch the videos and you can pay to participate in his groups. The format is that Tony teaches a concept or tune over a couple of lessons and students play for each other and give appraisal. Nice facebook community too.

     

    I've learned so much from Tony, a super nice gentleman too.
