  1. This is a pretty impressive A/B for filter.
  2. Like many versatile sound processors, Sansamp stuff will make some nasty tones too, careful dialing will deliver some nice stuff. Spending more does improve tone but at a certain point you are paying 5x for about 5% improvement that maybe only you really notice and care about. Still, it is really important to be a happy musician, people notice if anybody in the band is not all in for the fun. All good points. More $$ isn't necessarily better. Diminishing returns. Most of the gear we use is for us I think. Others don't notice much. Our singer did notice my LA-1A but was it because it's a $460 tube compressor or because I was using a compressor?
  3. Yeah, I REALLY like tht most of my gigs (loud nes anyway) are DI/IEM/Silent Stage type gigs. Almost no sound check, just a little for FOH tweaking. I haven't had to adjust my IEM mix much at all over the last few years. Part of me thinks I have these super nice basses and I should run them through super nice gear. The other part is like I'm at the mercy of the room so maybe I don't need $1,000 in tube compressors and DI's for a corporate gig or street dance. But I also want to listen to as nice a sound as I can in my ears all night long. Th eusuall circular logic I deal with all the time. It is a cute little thing. Many people love the SansAmp stuff. Tiny, inexpensive and "good enough" for most needs? Maybe?
  4. All good points. The LA-1A was a great addition. I can't believe I spent that much for a pedal, and another $220 for the CIOKS DC-7 to power it and my 2 other pedals. It is a slick little Nano board. It isn't cumbersome at all. I should have a proper DI I suppose. I just use the 600 ohm out on the LA-1A which works ok. That said, while I don't use effects right now, there are a couple tunes here and there where a little drive would be nice. Or a filter for "Can't Stop the Feeling" would be nice. It's only a couple tunes here and there so I don't want to spend a ton. I could get that on the Fly Rig. It is a step backwards in quality. I/we in the band kind of pride ourselves on high quality gear. It's $300. Not a lot for what you get, but also not LA-1A quality either. As most of my playing is DI/IEM, good tone is pretty essential for that. Live in the FOH, maybe not as much? IDK.
  5. I want to like the Fly Rig as it's a nice little pedal. I have never really gotten along with Tech21/SansAmp stuff. Maybe it's worth another try. I have a really nice, really expensive tube compressor I use now (LA-1A) and I'm not sure I can give it up. All my playing is DI/IEM/Silent Stage these days so a good IEM sound is a must.
  6. If you are on FaceBook, Itzhak Perlman does some brief 2 minute videos and always plays at the end. They are light and funny and his playing is of course amazing.
  7. Well, I am not too inspired to practice/play right now. We do still play as a band for the live stream from church. We physical distance and all that. I doubt that there will be any gigging for many months so it's hard to get motivated to practice. I have a friend who writes and he sent me a rough song to put a bass line to so I am trying to get up to speed on GarageBand and recording and sharing tracks via email or other means. I think I have my bass sounding pretty good. I recently added an Effectrode Leveling Amp to my pedal board and it is a game/tone changer. I LOVE it. Not being an effects guy, I'm surprised I spent $460 on a compressor, but I did have a friend who let me try his before I bought. I suppose the next step is figuring out how to do some of those annoying "watch/listen to me play along to my favorite song" videos. I'll need to brush up on iMovie.
  8. A drum teacher here (retired from the University and a great drummer and fantastic human) uses those in his teaching studio and really likes them.
  9. Along with the "there are too many drummers (good ones) around already that I'd never get a gig" reason, and the I'm not very coordinated reason, I'm also afraid of drum G.A.S. Knowing me and the level of gear I like to have, I can't imagine what even a small kit would cost. And when/where would I practice. We have a small house. Drums are loud. Bass is bad enough as it rumbles everything.
  10. I don't know that I'm coordinated enough to play drums. Not sure I'd ever get asked as thereseem to be plenty of decent drummers around here. I do have a decent Martin acoustic for teaching my class at school and filling in as WL at church. I hear there is a nice baby grand at a local Boys Ranch thrift store (long story) that I'm going to check out. If it checks out I may add that to my living room.
  11. Got a Roscoe Classic P bass for Christmas so I think I'm good. Roscoe Passive 4 string P Roscoe Active 5 Roscoe Active fretless 5 G&L Passive 4 String J
  12. Well, I just bought back my old Roscoe fretless 5. Don't really need it but it sure is fun to have back. Plan to use it for jazz gigs and church. A P bass.
  13. I come here every now and again. I miss the "good old days" as I cut my teeth here. Got lots of good advice, took a lot of ribbing over my decisions, and it has been a great place. I moderate on "another" forum where I aols went after "the glitch" here. I'll try to come around, but it's hard to get back what once was.
  14. 2.4 million views? Really?
  15. I always wanted to name the band I was in Revolving Door as the personnel changed so often. Almost named one band Steve Plays Bass.
  16. Thanks for the kind words. I thought after all we've been through, you guys should hear me play something.
  17. I was using a friends Geddy Lee. Was debating buying it but I think I'm going to go with an American standard instead. The Geddy is a little thin in the neck and maybe a little aggressive for my all around needs. I think the pickup placement and rosewood board will be more my taste.
  18. Matt Strand Group. He's the keyboard player and leads both bands. MSG is the quartet. The NYE tunes are actually Heavy Rotation - the horn band.
  19. So after all these years of posts, gear and such, some of you probably wonder if I even play. Well, here's a clip from NYE this year. I think it's OK so I'll post it up. It's a board mix, first time with the new board, recording, etc. Also my last gig with the band. For what it's worth...
