There's an 18-string acoustic back on page 5 of this thread. Here's an 18-string electric to go along with it:

Wow, Wandre!
Upper bout suggests an Eastman El Rey, sound holes suggest Gretsch or Rickenbacker cat's eyes, truly unique pickup, tailpiece sorta like a Guild harp style, & tuning head from Mars.

Cool stuff Scott. I think they all look like you need a strap in order to hold them though LOL! I liked the tuning concept on #6 but out of all of them, I would go for the Acoustic Whammy #3 (even though I probably could do without the whammy LOL!)...Very cool Artsy Fartsy look! cool

@ Danny, I missed it too at first as I was just looking at the headstock, then I skipped down to the pin bridge and thought, that's a lot of pins? Then I came up to that drone tuner because I couldn't see that very light drone string at first and thought that fretboard is awfully wide...when I found that drone tuner, I thought of a 5string banjo LOL! cool

@ Fang, usually on the 7 strings, the added string is a low B. I'm guessing the added plain drone string below it will be tuned to a E, B, G or a D or maybe even what ever key your playing in? I'm sticking with 6 so I don't get lost LOL! cool

This one goes to 11 . . .

For some reason, 7-string Acoustic Guitars were, or still are, seen in Russian music, tuned to D-B-G-D-B-G-D, low to high(?), although it looks like it would be easier to tune D-G-B-D-G-B-D, low to high, at least with anything resembling standard string gauges. Not sure what kind of string set they use for that tuning?

I'm assuming string manufacturers make sets specifically for 7-string guitars?

Otherwise re-stringing them could be a bitch. But I also dunno...

Can you STILL buy seperate strings? Or has that changed...

And besides; Concerning that 7-string with a drone:

What guage would you use for that?

@Whitefang - there are lots of 7-string sets available for Electric Guitars, haven't really checked into string sets for 7-string Acoustics, but I expect they're available, as well.

You can certainly buy single strings, in almost any gauge you or I can think of, and players who use alternate tunings often rely on assembling their own string sets, to get the string tension and tone they want.

As for that drone 8th string; it really depends on how the Guitar is tuned. My guess would be a low "G", but that guess is based on my tuning my 7th string down to "B".

We have a community access channel run by a local school district that is essentially a highbrow version of MTV's original format: 24/7 videos of classical music, ballet, theater & film excerpts, etc. I've gotten to see several performers using 8-string classical guitars (no drone strings).

Don't know about them Russian's music and their DBGDBGD tuning, but they seem to be everywhere else in the news these days LOL! But, GBDGBD are the notes for a popular 5string banjo tuning with a drone string and GBDGBD is also a Dobro tuning. So, using altered tunings, I think a good drone could duplicate any of those notes and I'll throw in an E as some Dobro players use a low E with the GBD. For gauge on dobro, I use 17-56.

Although I have no idea and will let the experts chime in, for a drone string, I'm guessing about an 11 for the drone. So I can get up to the high E or G and still get down low for a low D or B match up without getting too much slack? cool

ps. +1, singles are easy to get, especially the plain strings, so you could customize depending on what genre you are into...

My mistake, in thinking that 8th string had to be a lower Drone tone. Looking at the photo again, I'd have to agree with Larryz; whatever the string gauge is, it looks to be about the same gauge as the 1st string, a .011, or something close.

a bit of info on that 8-string: the maker's name is either Patros or Petros, and the guitar was made in 1980.

Elderly Instruments has it for sale, and they're located in Lansing, MI. No idea what the price is.

Thanks for the info. Like I said, I've ENOUGH of a time just dealing with SIX strings, so it's not really applicable to me. wink

And since I never NEEDED to buy a single string for nearly 50 years, I'm obviously WAY out of touch with the market these days. grin
