Just set up a little amp in my bedroom.

I have this old Gallien Kruegar ML250 Micro Lead amp I have owned since the mid 80's. It has been sitting in my climate controlled shed doing nothing for years and years. Anyways I have decided at 71 years old to resume my scale practice for some part hours or whole hours daily (as much as I can stand of it) because over the years my touch sensitivity and articulation have suffered a bit by just jamming over my home made backing tracks.

Anyways the wifey watches lots of TV and we live in a small mobile home in an upscale RV park (all lots and what is on the lots are owned by the residents with warantee deeds) Now I can hook up headphones crank 'er up a bit and do my scales and any other practice routines that I can remember from my lessons way back when. I hope to start up a band of old geriatric hippies from back in the day to play blues and blues based rock and my chops have to get way more exact for me to go out there and present myself.

Started my band almost the same way. Had to re-learn to play sometimes running a Line 6 POD XT into my PC with good speakers or headphones. Took a few years but finally found players who had been in the music business at a pro level with various other bands. We're retired, looking for a younger chick singer or frontman to jam and do a few local gigs. I sometimes book into a couple of the local clubs for the hell of it as nothing compares to the "thrill of battle" I guess.

Personally I need to jam with a drummer at least once a week to stay in shape and find that doing scales doesn't work as well as going live with other players. I find it very difficult to not be a bit "sloppy" on Leads with no practice or to maintain and keep my chops at a decent level.

Almost like 1 step forward and 2 back most weeks but haven't had this much fun since my garage band in the Sixties.

Been round the block but am not over the hill...

Wishing you all the best with the up and coming blues band! The blues is a genre where us old geriatrics still shine! I always noodle around with a few scales every time I pickup the guitar, just so I don't forget where they are...:cool::cool:

By the way, DBM, there's a sort of well known English bloke, a left handed bass player, who seems to still be doing pretty well at 71. He's still rocking the heck out of the house, doing non-stop 3 hour sets, so I don't see 71 as any kind of impediment at all to a life fully infused with music. You rock on, dude.

Reading this thread is quite encouraging... fits right in my wheelhouse. I was too lazy as a kid to follow through and learn how to play back in the day. I'm 61 now and still have unfulfilled rock&roll dreams. A geezer garage band is my goal also. You'd never know it to listen to me, but I've been practicing for about a year and a half; that is to say, I've got a LOOOONG way to go. But I've played a couple acoustic open-mic sessions now(give myself a "D" and a "C-") and found a 51-year old "youngster" in a similar situation to jam with(he plays bass). I figured there's nothing to lose and everything to gain by gettin' with it. I may never gig, but I sure do love playing; it keeps the spirit young. Glad to know I'm not the only old fool out there. LOL

Give yourself an A for just getting up there RL. It takes guts to get up there at an acoustic open mic especially if you're just starting out. The room is full of guitar players and they watch everything you do. Some are way better than you or can sing better (and that will almost always be the case). Open mic's are for beginners to experts and all are appreciated. It's a great place to have fun and meet new people who share your love for music...I like going to town and playing from time to time and having a couple of beers with new found friends.

Hope you and that bass player can get something going and have some fun. You are never too old! Hell, I'm 64 and I'm still teaching this old dog new tricks! :thu: .

Take care, Larryz

The Desert Blues Band...

Love the name...but it might get some people confused!

Ok...only music nerds like me who know Desert Blues is an African (mainly Malian/Tuareg) take on blues. Good stuff, though!

<---this is the American style of Desert Blues I had in mind. I don't think it will confuse those at the Apache Grove in the Arizona desert all that much. The Mali counterpart sounds very good but it also zounds more reggae to me and I can't understand their lyrics... I don't think the band name will cause confusion on the world music scene as band names really don't define genres all that much IMHO.

http://www.rfimusique.com/musiqueen/articles/090/article_txt_7908.asp <---here's an interesting article on the subject. Other sources also name John Lee Hooker and the combo with reggae as inspiration for desert blues across the pond. The Native American Indian flute is also in the Pentatonic scale and drones pretty bluesy IMHO...

ps. Nice ass(s) though in the video! and I like the way the music lends itself to surf music which went more reggae in the 90's...

Genre names can get so confusing, eh?

YEP, here are a few real ones, I can't really tell if they really play in their Genres (I Know Country Joe and the Fish were not really playing Hank Williams Sr. tunes, the Blues Brothers played more Soul music and I like the Blues Travelers different take on blues. I think many of them lose something in the translation LOL!

Jazz Butcher Conspiracy, Jazz Passengers, Blues Brothers, Blues Explosion, Blues Image, Blues Magoos, Blues Monster Brian, Blues Project, Blues Traveler, Country Joe and The Fish, Country Joe McDonald, Country Gentlemen, Rock Goddess, Rock Hard Power Spray, Rock Kills Kid, Rock N Roll Soldiers, Rock N Roll Working Circus, Rock Voisine, Rock a Pella, Baia E. Rock Boys, Rock Four, The Rock'en Berries, Rocking Horse Winter, Rockstar, Rockstars Lovefest, Rocksteady, Rockwell, Metal Church, Metal Force, Iggy Pop, Poptart Monkeys, Pop Will Eat Itself, Pop Evil...etc. :idk

Won't somebody steal it if you put it on the bass drum or tell the audience who you are? Just kidding, Hope it's a good one...

I have it on good authority that if you name your band "Free Beer" & you play clubs which display band names on their marquee, you will get full houses. Pissed-off-at-being-pranked full houses. Apparently there have been dozens of bands which have done this.

Another trick is to keep having "last tour" concerts and then doing another each year (kind of like the old going out of business sale). Motley Crue just signed a last tour agreement to dissolve the band name, etc., so they won't get accused of such trickery...
