Monday night I was in a restaurant in Kemptville, Ontario where people were smoking openly. It had a non-smoking section just like here in early 2004. I thought the entire province was smoke-free in restaurants, but it must just be most municipalities, not necessarily out in the boonies.

Here's an (probably not so new) idea for those who are giving up smoking. Take the money you would be spending on cigarettes, lighters, fluid, matches, etc and put it in a jar on top of your fridge marked "Guitar Equipment Kitty". Use that money to buy new guitar gear for yourself or make it a "splurge" fund for something you've always wanted to do. Maybe make it your vacation "fun money" fund.

When I had to give up sweets (cokes, candy bars, etc.) I did this and every time I would have bought a coke or a candy bar I put the money in my fun money jar. (my wife and son each have one, too) When I checked it on New Years Day, I had over $380 in there.

If you used to smoke a carton of cigarettes a week and you quit, that should give you about $25 a week to put in the jar. That comes to $1300 in a year. And I know some places a carton costs a lot more than that.

Oh, and another good substitute for something to put into your mouth instead of a cigarette is a pipe stem. They're usually pretty tough since they're made for people to kind of chew on. You can also draw air through it like you were smoking. A cigarette holder even gives you something to hold like a cigarette.

A friend of mine bought a box of little cigars with plastic tips (cigarillos?) when he quit smoking and just stuck one of those in his mouth when he wanted a cigarette. He never lit them but he said he got a good tobacco taste from drawing through them. After a while the cravings stopped and he quit buying the little cigars.

Sounds like everyone is pulling it together! Those first few days are always the hardest.

Now that you are past them, don't look back! Even though you will still have cravings, try to stay focused on your goal.

The first few days has probably taught you that you can get passed the cravings and once you do, you come out the other side free and clear for a while. As I mentioned before, those "Free and clear" times will get longer and longer with each passing day. This may make the cravings seem stronger, but it's just that you aren't as used to dealing with them. The fact is, they are growing weaker as the nicotine and other poisons leave your body.

Use the tools and knowledge you gained in the first few days to help you beat subsequent cravings and remember that everyone here is rooting for you.

One day, you will sit back, breath a breath of fresh air, and feel proud of yourself for doing it.

Remember this:

"You are a full grown, strong adult. It is a small, paper tube, packed with leaves. You can beat that! Think of the hard things you've over come in your life. You don't want to be beaten by a paper tube with leaves in it. You can do it!"

Err... well, kind of. I get the situation where I really crave cigarettes, but when I light one up I really get nothing out of it. Halfway through I look at this... lit thing in my hand and wonder why the hell I bothered.

Vince, I think A String is saying that you should find a distraction during a strong craving. Just get past it - pick up a guitar if one's handy(some of my best ideas happen during stress), or go online and give us a blast. We can take it. :thu:

Oh, I have no real problems with the cravings. I'm pretty much an ex smoker (except for, like, when I'm out drinking or at a party or something) But the cravings are a bit like those stories you hear from guys that have had a limb amputated: sometimes their "phantom limb" itches and there's nothing they can do about it :)

With me, the cravings are the same. I crave... something, but because I'm not a regular smoker anymore, I'm no longer sure what it is that I crave. Maybe I'm looking for the sensation of pleasure or satisfaction that smoking used to give me, when I first started, many years ago.

But of course, that was years ago and I was in a different body in a different world: if I give in to the cravings I'm invariably disappointed.

Not so much at myself for giving in, but simply because smoking has become a pointless sensation. I light up and whatever it is that I was craving is just out of reach. And then, of course, I have to come to terms with the fact that this pointless sensation has left me with this slightly blocked sensation in my chest, a dry mouth and a smell I'm not crazy about.

No pun intended, but it's a real drag. :)
