Blue Strat
Has anyone ever had one of their guitars painted? I've been thinking of getting a guy I know to paint my black strat a different color. I've seen his work, and he does a decent job of it. BlueStrat a.k.a. Dak Lander
I haven't repainted, per se, but I've refinished one electric. I sanded off the finish and used tung oil to finish the body. Worked just fine. Our Joint "When you come slam bang up against trouble, it never looks half as bad if you face up to it." The Duke...

Shoes
Colors that BITE the eye! Oh my... you'll catch some serious attention with them tones Here's a great place for information and all of the materials you may need for self refinishing. They're very helpful and also perform custom work on site for those who would like a pro to take care of the finish. Guitar Reranch I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder. Caevan O’Shite
Y'know, I like the Great Pumpkin Metalic Strat finish, but the Electric Green Alien Axe paint-job is waaay cool, and probably pure "bluestrat" all the way! What sort of pickguards would you be putting with either of those, blue'? Gotta be something special! Phait
I'd like to sand off the paint and have a glossed natural wood tone, but then it's my first and only guitar, kinda like to keep it the way I got it...

A String
Painting a guitar is easy. I had to do it once after I brought a guitar in from the cold too quickly and the finish checking cracked the hell out of it. First we removed all of the hardware and the neck. Put some masking tape on the inside at the back to protect the springs and the wires etc. Then you sand that sucker down. (I don't know who paints these things but I'm guessing it's done by a group of very evil robots who's goal it is to make sanding impossible). After a brief stint with some sand paper, we switched to an electric sander. Once the body was cleanly sanded, we hung it up with string on an old vertical coat rack at the hotel we were playing at. We covered the room with old sheets and broke out the spray paint. With spray paint, remember that less is more. Each stroke should contain a very small, light spray; I'd almost be tempted to say a mist. You'll need to do several coats of your desired color, and also, as far as the neon thing, you should probably do a coat or two of black as a primer to get the colors to stand out like that. Once the whole thing is dry, you clear coat. Be sure the room is as dust free as possible or you will get crap in it. Several thin coats of Clear coat is best. Do a light sanding between each coat and keep it up untill it looks good! Craig Stringnetwork on Facebook String Network Forum My Music
I I mjrn
As A String says, it's not a difficult job to do yourself. I'd go further & say that barring any problems like a previously marred finish that needed removal, it's not even necessary to remove the old color or finish. I've done this regularly to a couple of my guitars to give them a new look & the results have been fine.
Blue Strat
My black Strat has had the relic treatment by it's previous owner, and It's a plywood body, so natural finish isn't something I'd want to consider. Plus, it'd be kind of a chore getting all of the black finish off when I could wet sand it, prime it, and then get a nice Smashed Pumpkin Orange or Alien Surf Green finish. Another idea is a colored sparkle finish like the old Ludwig drumsets had on them, or like the silver sparkle Squier Jagmasters. When I first bought this guitar, I got a green pearloid pickguard to go on it, but it wouldn't fit right, even if I had drilled new holes. Maybe another Squier strat's pickguard would fit, but the standard Fender pickguard wouldn't. I've thought about getting a piece of plexi-glass and making a new clear guard and spray painting the back of the guard to match the body. BlueStrat a.k.a. Dak Lander
Instead of all that hand sanding, use a paint remover. If you're sanding you should be using a mask, gloves, ear and eye protection anyway. I find it's faster and you don't have that chance of gouging the body by sanding too far or getting the sander at a cocked angle. Once the finish is gone it takes just a bit of final finish hand sanding and a wipe down to get ready for new paint or an oil finish. wietse
painting a guitar is easy if the guitar is in a good condition than you have a nice smooth surface to work on. those which i have done were not that easy needed complete refinishing ,and than it's a difficult job. mostly because the original poly based paint most guitars have , can't be removed by paint remover. so you have to sand it all of. http://www.wietsesguitars.nl

I I mjrn
Still suggesting that for general purposes on a guitar with no finish problems you could skip the removal of the old paint but as you see fit...
