It's gases released from nitrocellulose. Nitrocellulose is inherently unstable. It WILL decompose slowly over the years, releasing oxides of nitrogen that are highly corrosive, especially to copper. Nitrocellulose lacquer finishes and celluloid pickguards are big sources of corrosive gas.

Wow, I had forgotten all about this thread. I didn't realize it had been over 2 years. Other than having to replace a broken clip on the new pickguard (broken courtesy of airport security) the GB-10 is still looking and sounding great.

I had bumped this up again for another poster who had some kind of undetermined "tarnish" issues on gold hardware...
