stratman_dup1
Just had to share this with Y'all, I just got a Nylon stringed Classical guitar and have been taking some classical lessons. Man do I ever LOVE the sound this thing makes, the nylon strings have such a sweet voice.I haven't been this excited about playin for a while now, guess we all need to try somethin different once in a while to jump start our motivation. Tedster
I'm pretty stupid about classical...but I've got a classical guitar that I've used for some solo passages just to get that nylon vibe happening...and yes...it rules! Emile
I'll second that. I especially like to play the nylon string with a pick because it,s just so dynamic. When you strike it hard it just explode yet can be so velvety when plucked gently. Amazing expression tool. Emile
Scott from MA
Yeah... clockwirk
Has anyone tried one of those nylon string guitars on a electric sized body with the piezo pickups? I think Fernandes made one. Any good? ~clockwirk~
fantasticsound
Not sure if they are in full production, but Taylor offered Steve Stevens a classical prototype a few years ago on which he recorded Sadhanna, of the Taylor/Windham Hill CD, Sounds of Wood & Steel. Sounded fantastic. Neil It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd

Scott from MA
What's wrong Ted, the idea of a 6'1" 200 Lb. guy in high-heels doesn't do it for ya? (Yikes! I got a shudder just THINKING about it!) Has anyone tried one of the Carvins with the nylons? I'm curious if it sounds good despite the shallow body. I too love the creative possibilities of a nylon guitar, and I count it a huge shame that I don't get to play one on more of the tunes I play on. It is a fabulous instrument capable of the most varying and wonderfully diverse tones.... I love them!! michael saulnier
I've played Carvin's and it's pretty nice... it still has an "acoustic" type body, just smaller than conventional "classical" guitars. Piezo pickup and pre-amp included. Like all Carvins it's well made, fast neck, easy to play for electric players, may be too narrow for true classical guys. Godin also makes a nice one. Electric only, hollow body but no sound hole. I saw Al DiMeola play one the last time he was on tour. Very nice sound. Also has MIDI output so he could play MIDI sound module along with nylon parts. Larry Mitchell has a custom Ibanez solid body nylon that plays and sounds great, I don't think they sell these to the public, he's a "signed artist". Ovation also makes some "small bodied" ones. I actually picked up a full bodied Ovation nylon for a great price and it sounds great acoustically and electrically... it's just that the larger body style makes the guitar "slide" around on the front of my body... and not in a "good" way! guitplayer I'm still "guitplayer"! michael saulnier
Quick update... Billy Idol pimpin' his "greatest hits" on Leno tonight. The band plays "White Wedding", and sure enough there's Steve Stevens playing with a Godin Nylon... overdriven... what's the reason for that? He actually made a mistake playing that goofy song... whoa... but there's the Nylon "reigning supreme"... guitplayer I'm still "guitplayer"! They claim the slider holes (Vol. and EQ use sliders, not round pots.) act as the sound hole. One other point, the Godin doesn't have midi out, it uses an internally mounted version of the Roland GR pickup, with controls mounted next to the sliders. Must be used with a compatible sound module or converter to send midi. I only mention this because the Parker MidiFly has an internal pitch to midi converter. The output IS a standard midi out. No converter required. Plug directly into any midi device. Neil http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Hard to miss with a nylon, bass, and afro-percussion shoved way in the back. (of the stage AND the mix! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ) From the liner notes of Sounds of Wood & Steel, Steve says he's playing flamenco only from now on. Might have been the idea for Billy Idol, unplugged. Bad idea. There seemed to be no connection between guitar, bass, and percussion. At least Billy sounded great singing. Mark Zeger
I saw Sting last weekend w/Domenic Miller. Both looked like they are now using Gibson Chet Atkins models. They used to play another model electric/acoustic nylon string, with a Tele body shape and a long, thin wedge shaped soundhole running parallel to and just above the low E. Anyone know who made these? Fernandes? I heard Pat Metheny playing his Linda Manzer fretless nylon string last year - unbelievable! (He also premiered a Manzer fretless 12-string that was even more remarkable.)

Dominic Miller always got good tone out of it IMHO. Maybe he ran it through tons of processors ~clockwirk~
stratman_dup1
Anyone who is interested in solo classical/flamenco/celtic guitar ought to check out Jim Graham at MP3. http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/63/jim_graham.html I can't remember what handle he goes by but he's an occasional poster here and the guy is a phenomenal fingerstyle player. And no, he didn't pay me to post this http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Seriously, if you like that style he's definately worth a listen. Guest
Thanks Stratman, and I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the classical guitar. I have posted the scores in tab & notation to some of my songs at my homepage, http://www3.sympatico.ca/jim008/public_html.html These are in standard tuning and the two Celtic pieces are not all that difficult, several of my students have learned them, Cheers, Jim
stratman_dup1
Hey, there you are Jim. How's it goin?? Thanks for the link, I would highly recommend it to all here. But, quite honestly, I've already bookmarked that sight and downloaded the excersises http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif . I haven't tried the songs yet but am planning on it real soon. I had to take a break from practicing because I somehow or other managed to hurt my right wrist. So I've taken a little break as a precaution, just heard of too many people that have damaged their wrists by continuing to play after they start to hurt, especially classical players. Should be getting back up to speed real soon here though. Thanks again Jim, keep on rockin!!! Phil.
Chad Thorne
O.K., my first post on this board, I've been lurking a little. I LOVE playing my Raimundo classical. I play pick-style, and sit around playing Jose Feliciano's version of "Light My Fire", Gipsy Kings tunes, and Mexican tunes I learned in TX. You probably know that world-wide the nylon-string guitar is more popular than either steel-string acoustics or electrics! Such a sweet soulful sound... In fact I did a guitar & piano instrumental with my wife in church a few weeks ago. I played the Raimundo and got a much stronger positive reaction than I ever have before; despite having played my Guild D-40 and Telecaster in the worship band every week for months! It's the guitar, so warm and gentle, I think - I didn't really do anything different...
Skip_dup1
Gotta add my bit to this- Gibson Chet Atkins really sing! Nylon strings, for me, are a good time to put the pick down-the tonal possibilities of fingerstyle are really something. Eric Johnson combines picking and fingerstyle on the electric, for some cool effects. I`m hoping to acquire an electric classical in the near future. Only thing is, they can get a bit steamrollered live by people getting too loud. Does anyone know about the Godin Multiac? what`s that about?
