Electro + which other keyboard ?

Recommended Posts

I use an electro 73 + newish CX-3.

I run through a kbr-3d or a real leslie.

Issues:

I only like the cx-3 through a real leslie.

Electro piano usable, but pretty weak.

Options:

Swap out cx-3 for nother clone (xk-3)

88 with clav/wurly/rhodes (motif or rack motif).

Is the motif strong enough on wurly/clav to

allow me to use the electro for b3 only ?

Mighty Joe,

I am not sure if I understand your question or what it is you are really wanting to do. Are you looking to get rid of the CX-3 altogether and just have the Electro as your clone? You mentioned the XK3...I think it is the cream of the crop in terms of authenticity and tone, however, I do think you'll find its Leslie simulator is not as good as either the Korg or the Nord. You may have a similar opinion about only wanting to use it with a real Leslie. But then I'm not clear on whether you want to keep a CX3/XK3 *plus* the Electro...

Getting to the topic of your post, which is "Electro + which other keyboard ?"

I use an Electro with a Yamaha S90 and it is a very utilitarian rig. I can cover just about anything with this rig. I do use my Electro primarily as a Hammond clone, but also rely upon its clav and Rhodes sounds quite a bit. When needed, I am totally satisfied with the clav and Rhodes in the S90. Plus, the S90 has a nice weighted action, it has the Motif sound engine and it is expandable. Not to mention it is a great Master controller. I find this to be a great live rig. The only thing I also carry along in terms of a 3rd keyboard is a virtual or real analog synth, which has been a different synth in rotation for the past few years. For the most part, I prefer to gig with just 2 keyboards.

I have posted a lot of information on the S90/Electro rig, so do some searches to learn more and then come back with any additional questions.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Eric

Thx souler coaster, I have read many of your reviews - good stuff and keep it coming.

Nord stays, that's for sure.

I'm just exploring options.

I've used some interesting combinations in the past year:

Electro + Clav D6 w/envelope follower

(nord was everything but the clav...)

Electro + Red Roland FP3 + Wurly 200a on side.

Two red keyboards was way cool.

One thing - could you use one of those old school midi processor/mapper thingys with the nord ?

I have some midi modules I could use,

but the Electro-as-master is out.

The midi channel is global - not per patch right ?

Actually, the CX-3 does really well w/midi -

I can use the draw bars as continuous controllers for a studio electronics moog piece.

A 24db filter sweep via the expression pedal is really fun....

Too bad it sucks to play piano on...
