daBowsa
I thought it'd be fun to compile a list of gear when you spot something on TV, at a show, in a magazine, etc. since this is one of my favorite "hobbies." My guess is the Triton will rule - I see it everywhere. I'll go first. Last night Joss Stone performed on The Tonight Show. Keyboard player #1: B3, RD700 on top and a 3rd board to his left. I could only catch the profile, but it could have been a Motif.Keyboard player #2: His top board was a Triton, I couldn't see the lower - it could have been another Triton. See, that was easy...and almost fun!
coyote
Between BET Jazz an VH1 Classic I'm seeing more gear than I could possibly keep track of. However, I was at a benefit show this weekend - the rig was all Alesis! QS8 on bottom, QS6.1 up top. Every band that played, from Elvis impersonator to funkers to metalers, used it. Sounded real good in the mix. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football.

twt
I saw Maroon 5 on SNL a few weeks ago - it may have been a rerun. Anyhoo, their keyboard player was using a Yamaha S90. Keane was on SNL last week and their guy was using a Yamaha CP70, although I realize that's a major component of their sound. twt
daBowsa
I spotted a Triton on American Idol tonight. Do I have to say the wife watches? Here's an odd gear sighting: Ray Manzarek playing a QS 8.2 ! It seems to be MIDI'd to something...but Manzarek? The king of the Continental? Playing a QS 8.2?!? coyote
Those combo organs are a sound the Alesis does quite well. I'm using it for "Lucy In The Sky". I saw the Triton on AI as well. My wife actually *DOES NOT* watch it. But I am hooked on it. I am not quite as impressed with the contestants so far this year. As for "gear spotting," that is a fun hobby. I saw this great group in Seattle with burningbusch behind the keys. He had an S90, V-Synth, laptop and some rack gear. The last big opener I did was with Little Feat late last summer. Billy Payne was carrying a smaller gig than a previous tour on which my group had opened. He had a Korg SGproX piano and a Triton Pro and that was all (possibly a rack). No Hammond or Leslie. I was recently watching a David Bowie live show from about 2 years ago on the Heathen tour. Mike Garson had basically the same rig as in the Keyboard Mag article last year ("Being Mike" by Mr. Fortner). Very cool to see him ripping some leads on the big Motif 8 perched above his GranTouch. That's about all of the gear spotting I can think of today. Regards, Eric

Saw Little Feat last summer and figured he was using the smaller set up for a rather small club and stage. In the past he had the SGProX, Hammond+Leslie, and an older Korg (don't recall the model) for the synth, horn, etc sounds. He gets some pretty incredible "Hammond" sounds from the Triton. StonedAndFunky
Hey all, haven't posted in a while, but I felt I needed to here. Saw a Chick Corea concert recently and he had some cool gear: Acoustic Grand Piano (not sure what model) Rhodes MK II Stage (with midi) - hooked up to Motif ES8 And some kind of strap on keyboard He used the Rhodes most of the time, but ripped a couple solos on the Motif and, of course, used the acoustic for all his older standards. He also used the midi function on the Rhodes a lot. He'd make it sound a lot like a DX7 piano, but with that Rhodesy undertone, then unMIDI it and play some screaming solo old school style. Great concert... All I need in life is a bong and a piano.
fireking99
I caught Hall & Oates Rock and Soul Review last fall, with headliners Michael McDonald and AWB (that's right the Average White Band!). Michael played a Motif 8 while somebody else was playing a Nord Electro. Daryl Hall was playing a Korg SG-500 (?) and had someone else playing a B-3 along with some unidentifiable synth. A VERY nice sounding show! I brought binoculars just so I could see the keyboards Go that way...REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, turn! B.O.D. stu3284
I do a bit local crewing for my local arena so obviously get on stage to help set up. From now on I'll try to photograph the set ups and the racks with my phone and post here for interest. Anyway a couple of recent gigs included Greenday who used a Motif 8 which was in a black MDF (particle board i think you call over there) fold away stand which sort of resembles a C3 when set up. I've noticed a few bands use these including Oasis the last time I saw them with Jay Darlington who used to play for Kula Shaker. I also did Wet Wet Wet who had a B3 with a Leslie 122 miked under the stage, a Rhodes (can't remember which one, 88 I think) and the 3rd one escapes me completely. I'll edit this when I remember. Anyway I'll try to get the photo's for future postings.
daBowsa
stu, that would be sweet to get an onstage view of some big name's keyboard rigs! Ah, the steady decline of Greenday. From punk to pop: 1994 - Guitar, bass & drums. 2000 - Accoustic guitar and cello ballad licensed to Seinfeld. 2005 - Playing live at the Grammy's with a keyboard player and 2nd guitarist. I guess the only thing that's left is a choir.

A nice touch was when he played one of the songs on a Fender Squier Strat, got someone out the audience, gave him the guitar and the kid when ballistic, jumping all over the stage playing the song note for note. He was then rewarded with the guitar. They do it at all the shows with a brand new out of the box guitar. How to make someones day. Stu

I guess the only thing that's left is a choir. I hear ya, but I have to say that I think American Idiot is just a fantastic piece of work, when you look at it as an album and not just individual songs. Lyrically, and artistically, I think it's definitely a peak for them. Granted, no where near the early punk days, but check out the lyrics on Holiday/Boulevard, for example. Very haunting, and well-arranged (IMO, of course). --Mark "I don't know anything about music. stu3284
Hi Everyone. I've just put in Neil Diamond (no snipes please, it pays the bills)at my local arena and took a few photos on my phone. For starters the double bass player had a pedal board and a rack with a Waldorf (not sure of the model) and a Roland JV 1080 plus a couple of amps http://www.swr2002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/kb/nd1.jpg http://www.swr2002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/kb/nd2.jpg http://www.swr2002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/kb/nd3.jpg There are two keyboard players. Stage left has a Triton and a Gem Pro 2. This was running Ivory piano samples on a pc. http://www.swr2002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/kb/nd4.jpg http://www.swr2002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/kb/nd5.jpg Stage right was a DX 7 with a Voce V5 and a KX76 underneath. These where connected to a pc running Giga Sampler and a mac running Reason and Digital Performer. You can see the top of the TFT monitors in my poor rack shot. The mac was the widescreen monitor on the right with the DP and Reason screens both showing on the one monitor. The box on the left of the KX76 was the slow/ fast switch for a small leslie type cabinet hidden away somewhere which I could'nt find. http://www.swr2002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/kb/nd6.jpg http://www.swr2002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/kb/nd7.jpg http://www.swr2002.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/kb/nd8.jpg Hope these provide some interest. I'll try to do more as and when I get the work.

stu3284
It definitly had the Gem logo and and Pro in big letters top right. I'll try to get another look tonight when I take it out. It would'nt be a repainted one would it.
stu3284
Just to say that it was definitely a Pro2 as I packed it away tonight. The panels looked as though they had been resprayed to match the triton.
Sven Golly
Interesting... both keyboardists are using the (really expensive at $699) Solid Stand adjustable stands ... although they're endorsees, and playing with Neil Diamond, so I'm sure the cost isn't an issue... keynote
The other night ABC had a special called "Tour Of Duty" with Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey as the hosts. ....What can I say?? She has a good voice but she really is very dramatic when she sings. Her hubby Nick has a fairly decent voice too. Plus the show was honoring our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan so that alone was a reason to watch it. Anyway, I noticed a Motif ES7 on an upper tier and a Motif 8 on the lower. There was a Korg Triton (surprise surprise ) plus special guest Brian McKnight was playing a Motif 8. There was a couple other Boards that I couldn't make out what they were but I'm pretty sure one was a Triton Studio 88. Mike
Phred
What was the piano sound that Brian McKnight was playing? I found it pretty clanky (not sure how best to describe this...). Before I got into the room to see the keyboard, I told my wife that I didn't like the piano sound much at all... Did it sound stock? Or maybe it was my tv speakers... I'm just saying', everyone that confuses correlation with causation eventually ends up dead.

Jesus_of_Suburbia
Quite a big thread! Let's see if I can contribute. I saw Green Day last fall on the first US leg of the American Idiot tour. I thought the keyboard Justin Freese was using sounded really good though from where I was sitting I couldn't tell what it was. I finally got the chance to see a live performance they did in Bochum (okay I downloaded it. Shoot me. lol) The "skirt" that was around the board came down a bit towards the end of the performance. Turns out it was a Motif 8. If anyone is a Weezer fan, I've seen quite a few pictures of Rivers Cuomo with a Nord. He used it on a couple of recordings he posted on the internet as well as on that Green Day cover he did using the Weezer name sometime back I think. I'm trying to remember what board it was I saw Dizzy Reed play on that Guns N' Roses comeback (or lack thereof) thing on the 2002 MTV video awards. Dave Horne
I just saw a British group on Dutch TV tonight (I forget the name) and the keyboard player used a Roland RD500. No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message. In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.
