Which workstation has best rawk! sounds? (acoustic drums and bass)

About 2 years ago I bought emu's Proteus 2000 sound module and a midi controller keyboard.

The original composer rom that came with it was very dance oriented and I wasn't happy with the drums on the rom - the acoustic drum patches don't sound realistic enough to my ears. Anyway I slotted in another rom (zr-76) and while it has more usuable acoustic sounds I'm still not the happiest.

I'm thinking of selling the module, the expansion rom and controller keyboard, putting some more money to it and getting a workstation like the triton le.

I'm basically after the most realistic acoustic drum kits and finger bass sounds I can get - something that with a bit of clever midi sequencing could be mistaken for the real thing.

Unfortunately, most demo mp3s seem to be dance oriented so it's difficult to know what to look for.

Any advice please on what I should go and demo would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Fnb

At risk of sounding pretentious or dopey: YOU NEED A LIVE BAND TO RAWWK!!!!

Rock is about energy and excitement. No workstation, regardless of the 'authenticity' of the sounds, will ever cut it. I defy anyone with any workstation to achieve the raw glory of, say, "Highway Star" off Deep Purple's Made in Japan.

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

rock=live playing/interaction/emotion

Anyway, on the workstation front: i'd say it isnt that much up to the model, since all the big three have pretty lame rock drums/bass;

it's more about having any of them with big enough RAM and HD for loading samples, and buying a nice sample library that suits you (drums with multi-velocity level and long natural sustained bass samples).

Motif ES has the biggest RAM expansion options. 512mb which is way more than enough for powerful drums/bass samples. Also the FX implementation helps a lot. I'd go with ES especially since it has the best rock keyboards on board as well. Pianos, ep, organ are it's forte.

OTOH you could do it with korg and roland as well. 96mb or 64mb can pull it off as well. Just avoid too many long stereo cymbals. ;)
