Rod S
Making fun of spammers is fun when a company is trying to spam the forum with offers (such as our recent events). Sonikmatter AFAIK is a not for profit community of kurzweil users. It's actually a really good site and it's possible that they were able to work out the discount without a profit for them, again AFAIK. HOWEVER, Dave is right, we have agreed in the past that this type of posting is not acceptable. I just think we can state the point of the forum (Like Dave did) without resorting to flaming the person. I think this just alienates people who may be further contributors to the site. I am being anal, but I have seen this site grow to something pretty terrific, and this type of attitude just doesn't seem to get us anywhere. Maybe we should have a link on the page with a 'terms of posting'. This type of posting is acceptable in a lot of other forums, and I think is fair to expect that we will get this from time to time, and we should respond accordingly. Anyways, this is all I have to say. I'm putting my flame suit on just in case. Just my opinion.... Sonikmatter AFAIK is a not for profit community of kurzweil users. I dunno, Rod - while that may have been the case at one point, this may have changed...they used the words "sale" and "customers"...these words frequently indicate that there may be profit involved. It's actually a really good site and it's possible that they were able to work out the discount without a profit for them, again AFAIK. While I am open to the possibility that I may be misinterpreting things here, I'm sure that you will understand if I am slightly skeptical about this aspect of their web site being purely altruistic... dB ==> David Bryce Music • Funky Young Monks <== Professional Affiliations: Royer Labs • Music Player Network

My comment is more directed at everyone else than at you, and just my opinion. My point is I find it a bit immature to jump with insults when they don't comply to forum rules; I think a simple comment will do. If I joined this forum, hadn't seen previous mention about this, and had posted something that I figured would be useful (as happens quite often in other forums), and got spammed, I would think people here are a bunch of loosers, similar to other forums I know which are plagued by a bunch of spamming and insulting morons (the reason why I don't frequent other forums anymore). Again, my point is we have nothing to gain from silly jokes and comments directed to someone who's not familiar with the forum (and may not understand the joke directed at him/her) and who may in the future be able to contribute. One example : The KurzList (yahoogroups) frequently gets offers from pyramid sounds about deals, and people there appreciate it. It is reasonable that people would expect this is acceptable; and we should make it clear what the policy is here. It's great that we are able to joke amongst ourselves, and this forum is one of my comic reliefs of the day. But I see a lot of people who contribute a lot who have been here for 8 months and for 1 month, and people should be treated with respect from the minute they step here. I don't know who this guy is, but the site does provide useful information to kurz users, and he has posted his own patches free on the web, and AFAIK has not sold them. I think we can at least give someone the benefit of the doubt in these types of issues. If they are getting commission or whatever on this, it is still the fact that people should be treated with respect when their intentions are spelled out. This is what I'm getting at: Craig's forum. When newcomes come and post their tunes to check out, do they get spammed? No, Craig locks the thread and informs of the forum's policy that this type of request goes thru the specific thread. This topic was also on SSS but Craig didn't lock it, he deleted it. And I don't think that this person has any need or interest to hang in this "corner" when he actually have his own site/forum to take care of. He told us to come to "his" forum and check it out and that is something that I don't like. clifyt
Thanks Dave for informing us about this. I just wanted to clarify things. I am a cofounder of Sonikmatter, sop I thought I'd appologize for Ricks response. I'm sure that Rick was under the mistaken impression that as Craig Anderton actually came to our site first directing folks to your content that we could do reciprocate. We get a lot of hits from the MFI guys and a lot of ya'll are members, so it was our understanding that ya'll were cool with sonikmatter and our philosophy. I'm sorry if you thought we were spamming ya anymore than any of your people directing them to your content. As for a little insight into our site, yes, we use the words customer. Running a community you should always consider the folks on the other side customers...regardless of whether ya want to sell them something or not. We are NOT making money from this sale. Folks are ALWAYS complaining about the high price of soundware and we wanted to do an experiment with our friends on both sides of the line. As for being a business, give me a break http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif We are a bunch of guys that want to share and help much like you guys are doing...but without having to hawk magazines and run banner ads to keep the site running. Our site is user supported and you will never see a banner advertisement there...just ain't going to happen. Ya'll run a biz so I expect these things. With Sonik, ya NEVER have to worry about us being biased because we are worried about loosing advertising dollars. Anywho, communities are communities. Ya'll have a pretty cool community here. Its a lot bigger and less personal, but cool. I read through these boards on occasion, but like yourselves, I don't post as I'm too busy taking care of our own. Again, this is an apology for the misunderstanding. If ya'll still want to point to cool stuff on your site on occasion on Sonik, you won't get any complaints as long as its in the appropriate areas and its not overly hyped. I welcome Craig Anterton and Jim Aiken to post more over in our area...its always good to have more experts visit http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif clif marsiglio http://spam.to (I believe thats our new url here)

I can't tell you how much I appreciate the both of you taking the time to come over and clear things up. The reason that you may have encountered a bit of...shall we say...resistance over here is that we just went through what can only be described as a pretty major ordeal with a sample vendor, and it has certainly left some pretty sore wounds. Check it out if you wanna see what happened - be warned - it ain't pretty... As a former Kurzweil employee, demonstrator, defender of the faith and enthusiast dating back to the K250, I welcome both of you happily to our community and request that you visit us more often, and will be delighted to come and spend more time on your site as well. My only request is that you please not post any specials or sales stuff over here - other than that, I encourage you both to represent yourselves as being involved with Sonikmatter, as I believe that your presence will add value to our forum. As you have taken the time and effort to clarify your position, this thread will not self-destruct, and your URL has been restored. http://www.ukobservers.net/cwm/otn/wink/thumb.gif Once again, I really appreciate your candor. Thank you kindly, and my apologies for any misunderstandings on our behalf. dB ==> David Bryce Music • Funky Young Monks <== Professional Affiliations: Royer Labs • Music Player Network
marino
Dave, I'm a longtime member of Sonikmatter (as well as a member here of course), and while I understand that this thread will be deleted eventually, I would like to testify the correctness and hard work of the admins and founders of that site. It's one of the best sites for synth players, surely the best for Kurzweil users. Regarding the topic of their "offer", while I wasn't there to see it with my own eyes, I'm sure as hell these guys aren't making a dime on this deal. They have an history of offering their services and time for free. Maybe, if they stated this clearly on the original post, you wouldn't have felt it was spamming. What they did is, to my understanding, to work with a few soundware companies to ensure a big discount on some products, especially (but not only) Kurzweil stuff. *Without* making a profit at it. Does that still qualify as spamming? The choice is yours, of course. I agree that the first post had a bit of an *ad* vibe, however. marino P.S. - I'n NOT associated with Sonikmatter in any way, other than posting there sometimes. Only, since I've been following and knowing them since they started, I am simply trying, in my broken English, to clear possible misunderstandings. Anderton
<< This topic was also on SSS but Craig didn't lock it, he deleted it.>> FYI...this is because I *do* know the Sonikmatter people are okay, but not everyone else does, and the spam patrol was already loading the cannons. Rather than subject Sonikmatter to getting shot at, I figured it was best to delete the thread and send a private email to them later. But since the subject was brought up here, I figured I'd comment here. As frequenters of my forum know, when I do run something that's ad-like, I always preface it with my personal comments saying that the message has been posted either because I was contacted in advance and gave permission, or I took my own initiative in posting it (e.g., when a company offers free software or something like that). That way people know the company went through proper channels rather than being disrespectful of the wishes of the people in the forum. My personal email to Sonikmatter would have said exactly what Dave said -- invite people over to check out the site and feel free to tell them why, just don't pitch any products. This is not only out of respect to the forum members, who have made it clear they don't want advertising (with rare exceptions) in a forum, but also the advertisers who make this site possible by supporting it with paid advertising. << I'm sure that Rick was under the mistaken impression that as Craig Anderton actually came to our site first directing folks to your content that we could do reciprocate. >> With all due respect, I think that's a questionable representation. I can only recall posting on the Sonikmatter site once, and that was as the fourth message in a thread about the Battery online seminar (a thread which I did not initiate, and posted in only after it was brought to my attention). As all the comments were valuable feedback (we're new to this online seminar thing), I asked for any feedback on other seminars on the site, and gave the URL where people could find the site. I allow similar requests in SSS, and in that sense, you are certainly welcome to reciprocate. For example, a message telling people about the type of support you offer for Kurzweil gear and your URL would have certainly been left up, as I would consider it making people aware of a valuable resource. I hope this clears things up. Deletions in SSS are always handled on a case-by-case basis, and involve judgement calls.
