An ideal city for a musician - what's Your choice???

Hi... the post about MusicTown, USA was interesting, so I'm wondering if You were totally free to relocate to any city, whichever is better for Your music career, where would you go? And why?

My choice - London, UK...

I think it's where it all happens (correct me if I'm wrong...) http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

For me it's about atmosphere that inspires to create- I've been as busy as a bee here in Vienna it's true. But I have a hankering to move to one of two extremes, either to Berlin, which is more metropolitan and has great vibes, or out of cities altogether, to some rundown place in the country where I can be as loud as I want 24 hours a day and step out into the trees to have a drink when I'm thinking things over.

London has great energy or did 12 years ago the last time I was there, and finding an "underground" studio to record in took no time at all. I think "where it happens" changes a lot and is probably hard to judge- who would have thought Seattle would be the home of one of the biggest multi-platinum pop movements?

Well, I wouldn't vote for New York. Hell of a place to make a go as a musician, esp. for a band oriented musician. I live about an hour to the north and my last serious band made major forays into the "Big Pineapple," got pretty good gigs at the right kinds of places (The Cooler, Knitting Factory) but man, it just seems like everyone down there is rigorously trying to remain unimpressed at all times. Great place to go see music, tough place to try to make it. I welcome NYCers on the board to offer rebuttal. I'd certainly like to believe that my experience there was atypical, but I know so many others who feel the same way.

Well, where's Seattle now?

Looks like it has vanished with all its grunge stuff... Same thing with Chicago - looks like those places are kinda one-time hits - Bang! (for a couple of years, while that music is popular) and gone...

And London is here forever, isn't it?

Austin or Minneapolis. But both have too many mosquitoes...

I live near Minneapolis - the mosquitos and the 40 below winters are what force our musicians indoors to practice instead of hanging out at the beach all day!. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/cool.gif
