What are you listening to?

I am constantly in search of new music...one of the ways that I like to find it is to ask people what they're listening to currently.

When I am asked this question, I find that I tend to respond by telling them what the 6 CDs that are in my car CD changer are.

Right now, they are:

1) Collective Soul - Dosage

2) The latest version of the CD on which I'm currently working (hooray for the Alesis Masterlink - excellent toy!)

3) Apollo 440

4) Art Tatum - Solo Masterpieces Volume 1

5) War - Greatest Hits

6) An assorted Saint-Saens CD with Carnival of the Animals and Danse Macabre on it - I just love Danse Macabre to bits. I've always wanted to sequence that sucker one part at a time - what a challenge. I've tried to find a score for it, but haven't had much success...but I digress...

What's in your CD player right now?

It changes all the time, but some recent CD residents include:

1) Clifford Brown and Max Roach - 'Study in Brown' and 'More Study in Brown'

2) Thomas Dolby - 'Retrospectacles'

3) Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields - Bach, 'Musical Offering'

4) the latest Matchbox 20 release

5) Weather Report - 'Heavy Weather'

6) Steely Dan - 'Aja'

7) The Who - 'Quadophenia'

8) Maurice Andre - Trumpet Concertos

Considerable listening time - especially in the car - is dedicated to non-music program including NPR and language lessons (I travel a lot). Of course I spend a lot of time listening to my own compositions and mixes, trying to improve them, noting what works, what needs revision, etc.

Ok, here is what is currently playing, as opposed to sitting in a case on the passenger seat next to me:

1) Freshtrack's Roots Rock Sampler (great collection of unsigned bands)

2) Prolonging the Magic - Cake

3) Aliens Ate My Buick - Thomas Dolby

4) Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

5) Songs in the Attic - Billy Joel

6) Play - Moby

7) Coming Home - The Nadas

Maybe they're not mainstays, but here is what I've been listening to lately:

Paris Africans: "African Byciclette"

Django Bates: "Winter Truce (and Homes Blaze)"

Kenny Kirkland:"Kenny Kirkland"

Tod Machover: "Flora"

Allan Holdsworth: "The Sixteen Men of Tain"

Michael Gibbs: "Big Music"

"Ellington '55"

Plus generous doses of J.S.Bach: The most played is, Well-Tempered Clavier, vol.2 played by G.Gould.

I am also listening a lot to my own productions, to hear how they sound on different systems, etc.

Let's try to repeat this thread every three months... It would be fun.

Excellent. I'm on it - I hope it's still available.

Thank you, my friend!

Based purely on my current "car stock" and the order they appear in my case:

1 The Age of Plastic - The Buggles (Trevor Horn's first band c.1979. Remember "Video killed the radio star" ?)

2 Secret World Live - Peter Gabriel (one of the best live albums I've ever heard.)

3 David Bowie live at BBC Radio Theatre June 2000 (the main man playing some classic tunes with a fantastic backing band)

4 Simple Minds greatest hits (for nostalgia)

5 The Golden Age of Wireless - Thomas Dolby (an absolute classic album from the synth guru)

6 Infected - The The (for the production. Over the top but somehow superb)

7 The Seeds of Love - Tears for Fears (another classic. I have always been a TFF fan since they started).

8 My Favourite Headache - Geddy Lee, Rush bass player's new solo album.

(Geddy Lee is my absolute hero and Rush are one of my all time favourite bands. I'm surprised none of you proggers ever mention Rush, is it an American/Canadian thing ?!)

9 The Best of Howard Jones (another synth guru. Apparently his first album used no sequencing whatsoever, it was all physically played by him like W. Carlos)

10 A copy of a Rush covers gig that I did earlier this year under the name of "The Geezers". I keep this in the car just to remind me that I actually did it and pulled it off. God bless the MMT8 and the tap tempo facility on the SR16. For one evening I was Geddy Lee !

Three comments:

First, did you ever check out the album called "Working Man" on the Magna Carta label? It's all Rush covers, mostly by metal cheeseheads, but there are a few fun things on there (like Steve Morse's solos on La Villa Strangiato and Red Barchetta).

Second, I had a Rush cover band when I was about nineteen, in which I was Geddy (minus the vocals). I played bass and synth in the band with the now-embarrasing name of Permanent Waves. Thankfully, we had a kick-ass drummer. Speaking of which...

Third...you did Neil Peart drum programming on an SR-16 and an MMT-8? Oh...my...GOD!

For jerrya3@hotmail.com:

I just want to thank you to have mentioned the Orchestre National de Barbes and their album, "Poulina".

I didn't know them, but seeing their CD in a record shop, I remembered your post and I just bought it.

I'm listening to it right now: It's quite pleasant and fun. Thanks for the discovery.

I only used the SR16 for tap tempo. I had programmed some of the keyboard parts as sequences into the MMT8 using a QS7 as a sound source and, as we had a live drummer, I needed to ensure that they played in time with him. I hooked up the MMT8 to the SR16 via midi and used the SR16 as clock master. This meant I could tap the SR16 pedal in time with the drummer to set the tempo and then use the stop/start pedal on the MMT8 to start the sequence. This method worked surprisingly well and meant I could kick in stuff like the vamp piano in the outro to "Spirit of Radio" and all the fast sequency stuff in "The Big Money".

This did keep me busy as I was playing bass, keyboards, Roland PK5 midi pedals and singing as well. It was a blast ! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/eek.gif

BTW: I have done some Neil Peart programming before - on an HR16 ! Whilst I was at college in '88 I did a cover of "The Big Money" and "Marathon"; that was fun as well.

Wow! Look at the wide range of stuff you folks are listening to!! I mean individually also!! All I can say it I've been out-hipped (again)in a big way. Better get shopping.

Dave B wrote:

"I just love Danse Macabre to bits. I've always wanted to sequence that sucker one part at a time - what a challenge. I've tried to find a score for it, but haven't had much success."

Great idea Dave. Do it! You might try the library at a local music college. Surely that is public domain now. And you might hurry before William Orbit beats you to it. I was just listening to some realaudio snips from his last years "Pieces in a Modern Style" Have you heard that? Except for "Adagio for Strings" which I think I've heard enough for one lifetime, thank you very much, I was very taken with what I heard. How is he getting those sounds?!! Does anyone know what kind of set up he used for that?

Okay I guess I'll have to list something too:

1.Awa Yio- Ivan Lins

2.Not Guilty- John P Kee

3.Juan Luis Guerra- This is very fast merengue, but not the hyper-robotic machine played merengue or Soca that is popular on some Latin radio and which is mostly (I think) just horrible. The horns on this are killer! TOP type syncopations but about twice as fast.

4. Sixun-Live

5.Banba-Clannad

6. Public Radio- They seem to be stuck in the 1800's but it beats the radio alternatives around here (except perhaps for throw down roots black gospel on AM. That's right AM band!)

7. Classicalarchives.com and midworld.com -these are midifiles of classical music. Some are good and some are not as they are sent in by different people. These are good places to hear how that ornament is played.

"It is a danger to create something and risk rejection. It is a greater danger to create nothing and allow mediocrity to rule."

"You owe it to us all to get on with what you're good at." W.H. Auden

That's funny.. I'm still considered the biggest 80's freak by all my friends because I still listen to that song. I'm always popular at parties when I started playing that song on the piano...

Currently in my disc changer:

1. Marillion - La Gazza Ladra (Live; disc 2)

2. The Corrs - Forgiven not forgotten (better than their latest 'pop' stuff)

3. Rush - Hold your fire

4. Dire Straits - Alchemy Disc 2

5. Lulu Santos (Brazilian pop guitarist - I'd be surprised if you any of you guys (or gals) have heard of him ; can't remember the album name)

6. Clannad - Greatest Hits
