Best kick Pedal?

PLEASE help me on this one!

I BADLY need some opinions on this, as I am not a drummer but a studio owner who will sometimes sit behind a kit and bash things. (often with a passing resemblance to an actual groove.)

I want a top-quality pedal for studio use. I will get a double pedal, as that can't hurt.

As a non-drummer, I have always liked the feel of the DW-5000 double-chain pedals, and was going to get one. However, I now see that there are three types:

Accellerator, turbo-CX, and Nylon strap.

Additionally, DW offers the "optional pedal customizing kit" which has adjustable weights and heel-risers.

I want to learn to play (better) myself, and of course drummers can always bring their own pedals to the session, so my primary concern is for my own comfort. However, I also have to have something that won't really mess-up a session drummer that brings nothing with him.

---------------

So:

1: assuming that I did go with DW, which of the three types would you recommend and why?

Would you recommend using ether of the optional adjustment systems, and why?

2: Is there a brand you prefer to the DW-500o?

i have a DW 7000 double bass pedal and it plays perfect, much better than any other pedal i've had before.

i suggest buying it, it is a great deal

but i have one problm with them, maybe this just be me but when i use the pedal the right apple rotates if i dont tighten it up abut every 15 minutes of playing

but thats just my pedal, so i bet its just a defect,

i strongly suggest buying the DW 7000 or any other DW kick pedal

-Tama also really good kick pedals

Allan:

You did great. The DW chain drive *is* the way to go. Drum Groove: You should not have to be tightening that pedal at all. I have used the 5000 pedal for years with no slippage.

You need to take that to your local drum specialty shop and let them take a look at it. ... or call DW customer service.

I'll try to alleviate some of yer Suffern... :D

You did fine. The DW pedals are great, and the preferred pedal of many excellent drummers.

This is a tough subject. To me the kick pedal is the part of the kit I am most picky about, and I think most drummers are the same way. Personally, I don't like DW pedals, having owned a 5000 Delta Accelerator that I couldn't wait to sell. In all fairness I have to say the DW 5000 and Tama Iron Cobra (which I like better) are probably the two most popular pedals. I have an old Premier pedal that has a feel that the newer pedals just can't seem to duplicate. You really have to try out as many different pedals as possible to see which one feels right to you. I guess the only way to do that is by going to some music stores and sitting down on some of the kits they have set up, or by trying out a friend's pedal(s)...

Thanks, gmd. I'll check out the Iron Cobra.

No-one has yet answered my key question, though, which is the difference (to them) between the three TYPES of DW pedal. has no-one tried them side by side?

Also, again, it's not just a case of what I like, as I won't be the one playing. Gmd's NOT liking the accellerator is upsetting to me, but that's the kind of info I need. Djarrett and Coyote, when you say I'm ok w/ the DW5000, are you in fact talking about the accellerator, or the linear mechanism? (I assume that the nylon is not as popular.)

Please keep the comments coming.

Coyote- Suffern in Suffern. yep. An oldie but a goodie. We even made it onto "Sex & The City.").

Allan:

Yes, the chain drive is much more prefered to the nylon simply due to dependability and longevity of the chain drive itself. It is only natural to expect the nylon to wear or break long before a chain drive.

Some folks prefer the nylon due to the "light" feel of that pedal. It harkens back to an old Gretsch, Camco, or early DW pedal when leather straps were used!

I personally like the chain.

As far as DW vs. Tama ... or Axis ... or any other pedal for that matter ...IT is simply a matter of taste or feel for the individual drummer. There is really no way to make a mistake here.

Play with the DW for a while. I think you will be greatly satisfied. If in a year you do not like it, you can get good trade in value on the DW towards another pedal at most drum shops.

That's my take.

Alan, sorry, I didn't exactly answer your question. As DJ says above, the DUAL (not single) chain drive is the best DW pedal. I believe it's called the 5000 Delta Accelerator. Most people agree with me, as it's definitely more popular than the strap drive. The DW pedals feel too heavy to me, which is why I prefer the lighter feeling Iron Cobra. Among drummer friends of mine, (most of whom play double pedals), I'd say it's close, with the Iron Cobra Power Glide (Dual Chain) being slighly more popular than the DW. I don't honestly know any who play on brands other than those two! (Kinda weird, huh?) It seems among dual pedal players that those two brands dominate...

Thanks, Djarrett.

Thanks, GMD.

I did check out the Iron Cobra today, and it is excellent. You're right, it's lighter and faster. I may go that way after all.

I also just saw on the net that DW has a new 9000 series. Among other improvements, it has a sliding cam, so it can be adjusted from accellerator to linear, and anywhere in-between. That may be the best bet for my multi-user studio needs.

I think I know what you are asking about the threee different pedals. I'm not intimately familiar with DW pedals but if they are anything like Iron Cobra, then they probably offer three options... strap, chain, and offset chain (with an oblong shaped sprocket).

The difference between the three is feel. The strap will give you a more traditional feel similar to the classic old pedals that so many drummers have grown up playing and thus are very comfortable with. The chain will give you more durability but a slightly different feel. The offset chain will change the response time of the pedal relative to your foot speed on the down stroke because of the added torque of the offset cam/sprocket.

You can't really say that one is any better than the other. It really boils down to your personal preference. It's like asking what is the best color.

Personally, as much as I love DW products, I am not a big fan of their pedals. Not that I think they are poorly made. In fact, they are very high quality pedals. I just don't feel comfortable playing them. Something about the balance and feel just never felt right to me. Even after tweeking the adjustments on them, I could never get it to feel right.

That said, I really like the Iron Cobra pedal. I own the Power Glide, which is the double chain with the offset cam. It just feels right to me. And the constuction quality is top notch... no squeaks, feels solid and sturdy as hell.. etc.

I'd suggest trying both out side by side and you will just know which one feels right to you.

Thanks, Siberian. That's two strong votes for the Iron Cobra.

Again, what I like best isn't the main issue, since this is for studio use. I thought the (adjustable) DW9000 would solve my problems, but it doesn't seem to be available anywhere on the planet.

So, I'm back to my main query: Whether I go Tama or DW, I still must decide between the linear action and the accellerated action. Which will suit MOST drummers?

Any more opinions out there?

I purchased a DW 7000 double kick pedal (used) about 5 years ago and I'm still totaly happy with it. Now everybody might think I'm crazy but as for a single kick pedal I LOVE the Ludwig Speed King.

It feels like no other pedal and after one gig I was hooked!!! Heck, I think Bonham used Speed Kings through out his career. (stand to be corrected)
