perfect kit hey....mmmm...well here's mine.

DW or Gretch Kit (maple Shells):

18x22 Kick

8x8, 8x10, 10x12, 16x16, 16x18 toms

7x12 Snare

5x10 Aux Snare

All mounted on a Rack.

Zildjian or UFIP cymbals:

14" hats

13" Aux hats, mounted on a cable hat by DW

17,18,19 medium/medium thin crashes

18 China Trash

21 projection ride or 20 raw bell ride.

7,9,11 splashes (mike portnoy cymbal pack)

My Axis double kick pedal would be the last thing I'd want.

Let's hear some more dream kits.

Well, it would probably have to be DW. First time I ever sat down behind a DW kit, waaaaay back around '90 or so, I was instantly charged before I ever played a note. That kit in particular--a one-off color becuase it was mixed wrong, ended up being a sort of slightly burnt-mandarin orange--had a 20" x 18" kick, which I've been fond of ever since; after that, the usual assortment of toms for the time, 10, 12, 14, and 16.

However I don't play that many drums any more (hell I hardly play anymore), so it would have to be something simpler and smaller, like 10, 12 and 16 (if that).

As for cymbals...wouldn't know where to start, it's been so long.

I guess my dream kit would be a DW...PAID for. :D

I've upped my standards; now, up yours.

Probably the same set I've got now. Ludwig Rocker Elites with Paiste 502 14" hi-hat and 16" crash cymbals, 20" Sabian ride (I'd probably change this to a Zildian Earth Ride), cowbell, a 12" China, a Gibraltar throne (nice padded seat!).

I'd add a splash cymbal of some sort, maybe another crash, and a metal snare to have a little variety from the maple snare I've got.

BlueStrat

a.k.a. "El Guapo" ;)

"first smoke, then silence

now that's zen!

I'm playing what I'd most like to be playing:

28" Lefima orchestral bass drum, premium calfskin heads

Gladstone copper snare, handmade by timpani maker

As for cymbals, I don't think there's any end to that...

A WOP BOP A LU BOP, A LOP BAM BOOM!

Yamaha Stage Custom Standard. Wine wood finish. More drums than I'd use at any given gig, thus allowing me flexibility of changing from a 'rock' to a 'jazz' set when neccessary.

2x 20"x17" bass drums

10", 12", 13" rack toms (though I'd only use two at a time)

14" mounted, 16" 18" floor toms (again, only two at a time)

A crisply tuned 5x14" snare drum

Assorted cymbals and percussion accessories

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

Interesting first post. Sorta on the confrontational side, lol....

While you are correct that it's about the music, the gear can indeed be important. Just to create an absurd example, would you be elated to find, after paying $50 per ticket, that a performance of some Chopin piano works in a major concert hall was staged using a cheap Baldwin upright? Or would you have expected a concert grand, perhaps a Steinway or Bosendorfer?

Besides, there's nothing wrong with fantasizing a bit - as long as you remember that it really is about the music.

I feel like writing a little tonight so let me expand on this concept further.

What I mean is that we as drummers need to get beyond our infatuation with equipment. Yes, it's nice to have the best quailty instrument that we can get our hands on. But a good instrument does not make a good musician. A bad musician can sound just as bad on a great instrument as they can on a bad one. The instrument is merely a vehicle by which we practice our craft. It is not the craft itself.

Talent and musicianship (and success!) are not suddenly discovered because we might happen to obtain a better ride cymbal or a hand-made snare drum. Our abilities as musicians are developed in our brains, our hearts and our hands (and feet, as the case may be). The instrument is the tool with which we project these abilities into vibrating sound waves.

But, I hear you saying, shouldn't we try to produce the best quality vibrating sound waves? Of course we should. But the instrument is not going to do it all by itself just because it has a recognizable fancy brand name and racing stripes. You could walk up to any high-priced Zildjian or Sabian cymbal and hit it with a hammer and it's gonna make the same God-awful clang as a no-name hunk of metal in the used bin of the local Music-o-rama. But take that old trashy metal disc and play a beautiful crescendo roll with a fluffy pair of mallets with just the right touch and expression and I'll bet you've got something musical.

That's all I'm saying. Yes, I like to think about drums and cymbals and sticks and hardware and all that good stuff. But mostly I like to think about and play music. Whether I'm on my nice, shiny Pearl Master Customs with Hand-Hammered Sabians or an old rusty cowbell, I'm trying to be the best musician I can be. That's what counts. That's why we do this.

Thanks.
