wildplum
I am going to be doing my first rewrap job. Nothing too big, I am starting with just a snare drum. I am looking for information on rewaping drums for the do-it-yourselfer. Lee Flier
Do you mean recovering the shells? Our drummer has an old Slingerland kit that he's had since he was a kid, and he recovered his drums a few years ago with a really cool Ringo black oyster covering. He got the coverings from this place: http://www.precisiondrum.com They have a lot of really helpful info and apparently it makes the job very easy. And there sure are some cool finishes! djarrett
Wild Plum:Lee got it right. There are some very important things to remember when recovering. On factory covered shells, usually the bearing edge falls above the edge of the wrap, but the angle is cut on the top edge of the wrap. When recovering ... this can cause problems if you are not sure about the angle and cutting of your bearing edge. Now, you can cut the wrap so that it is below the bearing edge, but ... be careful ... as you need to make sure that the aluminum rim of a drum head will go over the wrap!!! I speak from experience. Most seams (where the two ends of the wrap meet) on factory drums are heat pressed ... in order to make sure that the drum head will seat ... but you will rarely find that the two edges are "butt" against each other. For your wrap job ... make sure you have a couple of good clamps and a stout straight edge to make this bond as tight and smooth as possible.Last ... when using contact cement ... remember ... you really only get one chance to get it right. This stuff is unforgiving.Good luck.DJ
