captain54
I recently purchased Weckl's "How to Practice" video and found most of the exercises a little too advanced and technically a bit beyond me...I have his "back to basics" video also and find it a bit too rudimentary.... What I'm looking for is just a simple daily workout in video or book form that simply takes you thru a daily regimen to both maintain and improve basic chops.... any ideas? djarrett
Capt:I will say it again ... STONE STICK CONTROL.Albeit mundane and boring ... it is the best longterm solution for building chops. It is not some fancy "around the kit " workout, but ... many ... after mastering the exercises ... will incorporate these around the kit.DJ
YYZ
I agree, My percussion teacher always pushed the rudiments. You know, the single stroke roll, double stroke roll, paradidle, etc...I saw him play the drums one day and I could not believe what he was doing on that drum kit with only simple basic rudiments. It was Awesome. Learn your rudiments, learn them well and be able to play them fast and the sky's the limit. Jean Claude
coyote
Learn to READ. By all means do stick control etc.... but learning to read is where it's at. No one but another drummer cares whether you're doing a flam or ratamacue. All anyone else cares about is that you play the music. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. captain54
Reading isn't the be all end all..... It helps, but you still have to execute what's on the page... I forgot about "Stick Control"....I started working with that again, and I must say it seems to give more "facility" and helps get rid of the tension in my hands and wrists.... Yes, they're great for say snare and bass instead of just left hand right hand. A classic book, and for a good reason! A WOP BOP A LU BOP, A LOP BAM BOOM!
