Steve LeBlanc
I don't mic hihats...good overhead mics normally catch plenty of that. http://www.youtube.com/notesleb
felix stein
Neumann KM 84's or 184's (newer model) I have a shitty sounding Shure BG 4.0 that I use as well. Just get a deal on a small condenser. You don't have to use one, but I like one when I record. felix's band
sidereal
Steve's right... In many cases, good overheads and good placement will catch everything. I mic my hat on occasion, but usually end up pulling down the fader while mixing because the OHs have captured the hat just fine. But as to your question http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif if you want a good low cost option, look into an AKG C1000. A lot of dealers are blowing these babies out CHEAP, including Mercenary Audio. I bought two. Just for the record.
Jazzman
Hi Selloutrr, I have an Audio-technica mikes all around on my set. I have an, AT 4031 for the Hi-Hat, all of the time. I place it about 10" above and at near the edge with a 15 deg. angle on it. Then I tweak it in for the sweetest sound on my board that I'm looking for. I also have two more AT 4031's for my overheads in a cross-over configuration. They sound really sweet. All studio work. There you go............. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif Jazzman http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/cool.gif
countrydrummer
K&K makes a little gooseneck mounted condenser that they call the"Hot Hihat Mic". The gooseneck is attached to a clamp for your Hihat stand and includes a preamp. I've been well pleased with mine and it costs about half what an SM 81 would. Don't need another mic stand in the way either!
Jazzman
Good point countrydrummer! How do you set up this gooseneck with the mike? Do you set it up on the top like boom mikes? Jazzman http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/cool.gif
countrydrummer
Jazzman, I aim the little condenser just like you would aim a boom mounted mic. A couple of inches above the top hihat cymbal at its rest position. and a couple of inchs away from the bell. I point it away from my snare as much as possible.
