Effects Processors?

Catlin

Recommended Posts

I am looking to buy a effects processor, but i am not sure what i really want.

I am searching for alot of features, because i play by myself alot(I like practicing alone), so i figured somtihng that can keep some rythyms would be nice.

I read a review in BassPlayer last year, about the

Korg ToneWorks PX4B Pandora Personal Multieffects Processor

And was curious if anyone uses one, and what they think of it, the features sound great and just plain fun if you ask me.

Does anyone know how much it would run me Canadian, if I did in fact go ahead and buy one.-Thanks

Catman

Welcome, btw!

I'd hit Ebay and search for one used (or new, for that matter). The PX3B was the prior generation, and you can probably snag one real cheap. Check Korg's web-site for the manual.

Originally, I was looking at one of these. I chose to go a different route though (needed something more targeted toward church band going straight through a PA). Having a drum machine or some sort of rhythm-maker is ideal as a bassist, IMHO.

I have the PX3B and absolutely love it. Neatest little gadget ever made for bassists! Some of the effects are suprisingly good, the drum patterns are great to practice with, the sampling/pitch shifting features have ssaved my butt twice when I had short notice and had to leard some tricky bits quick, and it certainly travels well. The main diff between the two is the 4 supports wireless headphones though I've never heard a pair to review.

How many effects are on them, and how in depth is the drum machine part of it?

It's not a drum machine, just drum patterns. You can only alter the volume and speed of the patterns, not change them. All the modulation style effects (phase, chorus, etc.) are excellent. The distortion is a love it or hate hate it type, way over the top. Amp models are distinguishable from each other. Great bang for the buck.

Well, since folks are posting other stuff in addition to the Pandora, I will too. I've got a Digitech BP8, which is a bass tube preamp and multi-effects in a pedal form. I think it's great. The tube preamp section is pretty awesome. The compressor is awesome. The effects are all good. Digitech doesn't make them anymore, but you can snag one on Ebay for about $130 or so. Make sure it has the power supply...those are $50 from the factory. Manual can be downloaded from Digitech.

The only annoyance I have is that it cuts off for a few milliseconds when you switch patches (and a few milliseconds is an audible drop out).

Check the recent thread titled "mp3 samples posted" or something like that...the two samples I posted links to are through the BP8 straight to a digital recorder.

HTH,

Dave

EDIT: Oh, one thing I should add...the BP8 doesn't have any sort of rhythm section or drum machine built in. But, you can certainly snag something like an Alesis SR-16 drum machine (generally the standard by which most drum machines are measured) for around $100 off ebay, maybe less. There's plenty of stuff that'll produce drum grooves with minimal effort, and I'm pretty sure some of it is even pocket size, but I don't recall any specific brands or models right off. Another goodie that you could probably snag cheap used is the Boss DR-5...it's a drum machine plus tons of other instrument sounds (some good, some not so good). You could create a whole backing band for yourself with one of those. Anyway, just some thoughts. Not sure how complex you might want to get, or if you just want to keep it really, really simple. Nothing wrong with either approach.

Here are some various mp3's made on the pandora strait to the line in of my sound card using various effects. All parts including guitars were made on through the pandora. The poor playing is not part of the pandora, but a localized feature at my home.

Lug,

Great bass tones on those recordings, I really like the tunes as well!

Careful man, I just might become a fan! I'd really hate that to happen 'cause I'm too old to properly stalk people anymore.:D

Perhaps a trip to a qualified audiologist should be in your near future.

If you don't already use anything in particular, grap a copy of Audacity and Lame (both free)to record with. Of course you can also use Windows Recorder. The trick is to record bass and drums into the line in, save it as a wav, and then play the wav file out of the speaker outs on the PC to the stereo input of the Pandora. This lets you put a lead part on top and rerecord it. You can do this multiple times with little or no degredation of the sound.
