hard truth
I'm primarily a guitarist but I play bass regularly on my recordings. I'm looking for a bass that is relatively easy to play but with a good fat sound. I prefer relatively low action and a shorter neck length and five strings. I loved my friend's (real all-graphite) Steinberger. Any suggestions for something similar but under $700.? Are the cheaper Steinbergers any good? www.oranjproductions.com

lug
http://users3.ev1.net/~woodd/srx505.jpg Most comfy 5-string neck I've tried, very light, good pups and hardware, so-so electronics, just over $500 in the US, new. lug
Another good buy in this range would be a G&L Premium Tribute L2500. dcr
Good suggestions so far. The Yamaha BB line, the Yamaha RBX line, the Ibanez BTB line, & the Godin Freeway line all offer excellent 5-string basses for under $700. It also might be worthwhile to look at Dean. Are all your guitars under $700?
hard truth
Thanks to everyone for the advice. I tried several of the suggested basses. I ended up with a Schechter Stiletto Studio 5. It had the relatively narrow neck and low action i was looking for, plus a neck-through body, EMG pickps, active EQ, good price ($625 including hard case and sales tax) and a nice look and feel. So far I'm loving it. www.oranjproductions.com
