Eddie R.
Well. I am still fairly new to bass guitar but I believe I am good enough to warrant a major gear upgrade. But currenty my rig is simple. Ibanez GSR200 or '87 Peavey Foundation S 4-string. ZOOM 506 <-- I rarely use it. Peavey Mark III XP Series 150 Watt Bass head Peavey 1516 Cab 2x8" and 1x15" Black widow speaker. My experience has been that you've gotta have it in the hands, but then when I get a chance to experiment with various types of high end and middle range gear, I start discovering how I can sound better than I do on low end gear. Yes, most of us can probably either get "our" sound or a sound we like from any combination of bass and amplification, but sometimes we can get it faster on nicer gear or even discover new sounds that we dig. Let me put it another way: I started off with a Gorilla 30W combo (1x8), and even today, despite my much improved skills, it still pretty much always sounds like ass. (I have donated it to a good friend who is starting to learn bass, as it was a fine amp for getting started!) However, I don't need a $3500 bass and $5000 of amp, cab, and effects to sound good. spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. Messiaen knew how to parlay the funk. rumpelstiltskin.
i know it's not all hands -- i was just feeling inferior with my gear. but i was thinking about how much i'm enjoying this BP-15 squier practice amp, though it is kinda poopy. i have gotten some pretty good sounds from a lot of gear, but that doesn't stop me from wanting a sterling, a pair of HT112s, and a merlin 600 head to make it all easy and loud. robb. because i like people. Great for small gigs with the Mackie on top. It driven by an old Carvin amp bridged to 300 watts. My bass is a custom Zon Sonus Lightwave 5 string which will soon be upgraded with a Roland 13-pin jack for V-Bass/synth driving duty. I also have a slew of old Carvins (5 of them - 4 to 6 strings, fretted & fretless). Great for the money, but not in the same league as this Zon. Pernax
Hmm I guess it's time to post a picture to give a bit more color to this thread... And also it gives me the opportunity to display my most recent purchase, an Ibanez BTB-406. I got it a really good price (bought it used, but in mint condition). The difference between the 5-stringer and the 6 is nothing comapred to the transition from a 4-stringer to a 5er (although going from a 34" scale to a 35" was what brought the most problems). http://www.helionprog.com/pics/temp/rig2.jpg (up to 200 characters) You may use UBBCode in your signature. Spector Korean Model (97' or 98') I inherited this bass from a friend who sadly OD'd a couple of years back. Peavey T-40 Another of my friend's Basses. Trace Elliot Preamp (not sure of the model #, but it's an 11-band). Kicks major bootie! Mackie 1400i Power Amp Hartke 115XL Korg DTR-2 Tuner I also own a full Guitar rig (75' Les Paul Deluxe, newer model Danlectro, Hughes & Kettner Triamp Head and Marshall 4X12 slant cab). Gear I would like to own (and probably will talk myself into buying!) Avatar 4X10 cab Avatar 2X10 cab G&L L-2500 (or the Tribute Series version) EB Sterling Fretless (mmmm, fretless!) Another Mackie 1400i (since the one I'm using is really our PA power amp)! Sans Amp RBI Bass DI Acoustic Electric Bass (not sure what brand yet). The Martin is beautiful, but no pickup. Wow, I have major G.A.S. pains now!!! Oh, and I HAVE TO go to Sam Ash or GC tonight to purchase a keyboard for my son. He is turning 5 tomorrow and wants a keyboard... Too bad he doesn't want a Bass. We could share! I'm sure I could teach a 5 year old to play a Sterling fretless, right?? lol Bee, why you sting me? - Jack Kerouac
