Loved that Mirror Conspiracy disc. I reviewed it for a music mag when it was first released. Great CD. Here's the review. THIEVERY CORPORATION The Mirror Conspiracy Hipsters — love 'em and hate 'em. Those guys who can wear suits without looking like accountants, the women who seemingly fall out of bed into an old, raggy dress and look like the cover of Vogue. The way they can just hang out and do nothing but make it look like there couldn't be anything cooler happening in the world. Jealous of them? Damn right. Think they're shallow? Sure do. And even while alternately vilifying and envying the oh-so-groovy set and its foibles, there steps into the void a musical conundrum — Thievery Corporation. It'd be so easy to hate this act for its hipness. There's no doubt Mr. Creased Suit and Ms. Flawless Cheekbones will adore listening to The Mirror Conspiracy while daintily sipping on some quaintly named mixed drink in a low-lit lounge — they might even sway slowly and gracefully to the mellow grooves and smooth layers of violins and percussion as traces of smiles play about their unblemished lips. Yes, Thievery Corporation certainly will appeal to this demographic, but this is not its limit. From the opening reggae-tinged tones of “Treasures” to the jazzy smoothness of the title track, The Mirror Conspiracy combines the maturity and thoughtfulness of Portishead, the cleverness of Massive Attack and the poppy notions of The Sneaker Pimps (without the big guitar) into a package with enough gentle cohesion to please almost any listener. Lilting female and male vocals from several different sources, both live and sampled, grace the tracks without confronting the listener with a deluge of mind-muddling messages. The primary theme here is cool, detached and unencumbered. Perhaps there's something more to be said regarding the music here, but those concepts are probably best discussed next to the tiny, sparkling candles on a chrome bar while sipping a chocolate martini.
