GovernorSilver
yup I enjoyed it. I also laughed when he said no way in hell I'm gonna do that again - or something to that effect.
ProfD
Hilarious but excellent breakdown of how some of us produced music back in the day.😁 It also provides context for any cynicism we might express when folks complain about modern gear. Today's gear puts a complete studio in the hands of a composer/artist/musician/producer. No sync issues, dead channels or tape fights. No tape fees or studio time hourly costs.🤣😎 Quote PD "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."--E. Stokely
I was only a pro for a couple years (and in just a jingle studio at that), but the worst thing about "back in the day"--it was quite the job if you ever wanted to get a mix session back to what it was, if you didn't have automation and had a ton of midi gear. You could do it, but it wasn't fun or easy (though the difficulty of course depended on the specific gear). Mixing sheets for console settings, patch bays, outboard gear settings, etc. Then you had the midi keyboards and modules. For example, loading samples in the Synclavier involved big winchester drive tapes and arcane loading command line stuff. If you were lucky you could just get patch changes to work (you *did* save the patches, right?) and didn't need sysex. You might have to set modules into multitimbral mode. It just took a bunch of time and effort. Now, I say File > Open Project and *bam*. Eh, don't want that one, File > Open Project and again *bam*. It's like some kind of magic.
