Airlines to Begin Stowing Passenger's Basses and Guitars Directly in Landing Gear Compartments

Recommended Posts

Scarry stuff. And as my wife said, if it is damaged, even a guitar of equal brand and price IS NOT THE SAME!! EVERY ONE HAS IT'S OWN SOUND QUALITY!

The only time I took a guitar on a flight it caused a problem. We were headed to Ft Lauderdale for a cruise. Timing was tight to catch a connecting flight at O'Hare but I had to wait for them to bring up the guitar and we missed it. We had to catch a later flight and ended up seeing New Years as the plane was landing.

On the upside I got to watch William Shatner in 'Nightmare at 20,000 Feet' during the Twilight Zone NYE marathon a bit higher, around 30,000 feet.

If I need to fly, I send my gear via FedEx or UPS, whichever is more convenient, preferably with a station at the airport. I send it "Hold For Pickup" at that site.

They handle the gear better than the airlines do, usually cost less, and are much less likely to send it to the wrong airport.

I thought this was an interesting perspective on flying with musical instruments.

The first thing wrong with that picture is a gig bag.

If you are flying, get a flight case. Period.

Calling an inferior case that doesn't protect your instrument a “gig bag” is just wrong. I have flight cases and hard cases for my gear, whether I fly or drive. Your gear needs protection, and your gig needs protection. IMO If get to the gig with a broken axe because you used a “Gig Bag”, you are at fault for blowing the gig.

After less than a minute of seeing a person putting a bass on a plane in a gig bag, I couldn't watch any more.

Might be an April fools joke,,,, but I'm not laughing.

It WAS a joke, it's not really happening.

When I was gigging in Europe, my guitar of choice was a Peavey Milano. It could handle anything. Yes, even Delta airlines baggage handlers got it there undamaged. Not always on time, of course...

In a nuclear exchange, add the Milano to cockroaches and Cher's career as the only survivors.
