whitefang
Without writing them all down, from your list I picked(good list, too, by the way...); 2, 4, 7, 10, a BIG 16, 17, 18 and 26. Music while cleaning the house. Portable CD player kickin' out tunes while doing yardwork. Radio going while working in the garage. Relaxing classical when reading. Why, I'm listening to DeBussey's "Images" while writing this post! Music does a LOT for me! Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left! Lee Flier
Great topic! 1. provides a soundtrack for your life - yes 2. reminds you of better days long ago - not really, some music reminds me of the past but not necessarily better or worse days. 3. provides inspiration for the days ahead - yes 4. keeps you intellectually stimulated - not too much, I usually prefer music that doesn't appeal to the intellect all that much 5. puts you to sleep at night - hell no, I usually can't fall asleep to music 6. wakes you up in the morning - nah, I need my coffee before listening to anything 7. fends off boredom - I'm hardly ever bored 8. helps you identify with a culture cult - nah 9. makes you feel sexy - quite often 10. provides wallpaper and audio background for other more important stuff - no way, if there's music on that I like I'm actively listening and if it's music I don't like, I'm actively annoyed 11. keeps you mad at the evil System - sometimes, depending on the music 12. feeds your dreams of success in music - hearing good music often inspires me to play better or write better songs, which is a large part of my definition of success, so yeah. If you mean dreams of financial success, not really. The music itself doesn't make me think about that. 13. pays the bills - sometimes 14. hinders you from paying the bills - sometimes 15. ruins your life - sometimes 16. makes your life worth living - always 17. lowers your blood pressure - well I've already got low blood pressure, I think music elevates it! 18. helps you accept life as it is - once in awhile 19. helps you not accept life as it is - often 20. puts you into a trance - sometimes 21. helps keep you out of a trance - sometimes 22. makes drugs seem better - no 23. makes drugs unnecessary - yes 24. helps you let off steam - yes 25. helps you build up steam - not usually 26. makes for good parties - yes 27. makes parties unnecessary - since most of my friends are musicians, and we get together quite a lot, music and parties tend to go together for me! 28. tempts you to commit crimes - no, unless you count trading bootlegs. 29. inspires you to be a better person - hopefully Great list. But in the end it's pretty hard to explain what music does for me. It touches someplace nothing else can, and connects people in a way nothing else can. Gulliver
Different music does different things to me... If speaking about my favorite music styles, ie. music that I usually listen to, then it: 1. provides a soundtrack for my life 3. provides inspiration for the days ahead 4. keeps me intellectually stimulated 7. fends off boredom 10. provides wallpaper and audio background for other more important stuff 23. makes drugs unnecessary 29. inspires me to be a better person My own music: 4. keeps me intellectually stimulated 9. makes me feel sexy 13. pays the bills (unfortunately - not all the bills, alas!) 16. makes my life worth living 23. makes drugs unnecessary 24. helps me let off steam 27. makes parties unnecessary I am back. whitefang
If I fully understood what was meant by "soundtrack of your life", I might add it to my list. Off the top, it sounds like some "new-age" babble or something equally silly like "Windmills of Your Mind". Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left! blackfish
music is the only dimension in which my left and right brains don't argue. It is the only place where there is no right or wrong...there is just music; faults, imperfections,nuances...humanity.
RABid
For me, music is like sex. Gotta have it. Gotta play it. If I don't play keys or drums for a week I start to get tense and moody. If I feel really bad I can sit down with a good piano patch and release everything into the keys. Robert This post edited for speling.
