Could it be a daily scheduled server/database backup? I notice I tend to get the server timeouts around midnite (Eastern Standard Time). Usually lasts 1-2 hours. When I avoid those hours, I don't experience any problems. Also if MPN is on a shared server it may be someone else on the same server, running backup and maintenance near those times.

I"ve had some problems connecting too, which is, of course, only a very minor inconvenience. Somewhat more of a bummer is that, even though it doesn"t connect on my end, it marks everything as 'read,' forcing me to scroll through the threads to find the new posts when I am finally able to connect.

Don't know if this is the issue or not, but Harmony Central used to get hammered by spammers, and that would slow things down incredibly. At one point we simply blocked all users from India, and that made the site fast again...although we hated to freeze out the legit users.

The spammer thing is crazy. The Roland forum handles this by having a mod approve EACH POST before it appears... which can result in days or even a week going by before your post appears, it kills any momentum of any conversation there. And ironically, unbelievably, they still get spammed sometimes, where the same post will appear in nearly every section on the board! OTOH, many forums (even others using the same underlying BB software) have instantaneous posting and virtually no spam, I don't know what they're doing differently.

Maybe this is the best place for a shameless plug! Our now not-so-new new video at https://youtu.be/3ZRC3b4p4EI is a 40 minute adaptation of T. S. Eliot's "Prufrock" - check it out! And hopefully I'll have something new here this year. ;-)

Over at www.casiomusicforums.com the software we use (Invision Community) has a pretty sophisticated anti-spam system. If bots or spammers get past the registration (rare these days), we have moderation rules in place for brand new members which limits their access and participation amounts temporarily.

I don't remember this server timeout problem when Piano World (owned or ran it circa 2016 (?.)

When Piano World owned or ran what? :idk:

Thanks to all for the feedback. I'll make sure Jim sees it.

I believe our database is backed up at 1AM Eastern. It does lock up the forums for about 30 minutes because of the table type that it is completely locked while backing up. We requested a conversion to a different table type, but the developers said they would not support the change.

We are on a dedicated server.

Looking through the firewall logs, I can see that there have been several DDOS attacks that were eventually blocked on Sunday. Perhaps that was the cause of disruption?

I put a permanent block on the IP range, so they will not be able to access the forums again.

It would be nice if the site could at least put up a static page at these times, saying that the site is unavailable due to nightly backup, and will be available again by about 2 am EST or whatever. Just so people know what's happening, and don't frustratingly keep attempting futile logins.

That's what we did at a couple places I've worked. At UCLA we publized to all that online administration system is online from certain hours nightly and offline most of Sunday. Gave use big windows of time to do maintenance. At another place we switch to different landing page for our website saying site is Read Only for maintenance. That way users could still use the site they just couldn't post or make updates to their accounts. That was handy for both scheduled maintenance and emergencies.

This is why I never wanted to be a DBA big production databases can be a PIA to maintain.

As you guys have seen from the Global sticky, the move is on.:2thu:

Just remember I'm responsible for that as well. :taz::saber:
