Amen on the quote; "technique in the service of music" not "technique for technique's sake" amigo, that is my focus on solos these days, more melodic melody, less wanking. dbm If it sounds good, it is good !! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=143231&content=music

Yep it is just a matter of focusing on the sound instead of technique. Listening is getting more important to me than hitting a bunch of wanker notes. It is a struggle for me because I have been focusing on a lot of notes & filling in and leaving no silences. Of course I have to throw in some ripping here and there, but there should be a lot more singing notes than ripping. My buddy Steven Wineglass over in Hollywood told me "make your solos hum able So that when the audience walks out they are humming your tune. Then you are in tune with the audience". I'm working on it. dbm If it sounds good, it is good !! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=143231&content=music
Fred_C
Yeah man, you gotta'play phrases, you gotta' take breaths. My first Jazz teacher used to say, "play your solo like a horn player plays, or a singer sings". I tend to play slow and smooth. I use speed to add variety or emphasis. When speaking about profanity, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) said that profanity should be used for emphasis and when used too frequently, it loses its effect. I agree and think the same way about speed on guitar. If you play cool, you are cool.
