Well, the non-drama of regime-change moves forward (Hey, Molenda'd been ther 20 yrs) as new editor Chris Scapelliti, who previously did the online pages, introductifies himself.

[bTW&FWIW, MM's still Exec :bor: Ed ]

On the progressive front, I got introduced to someone brand new to me: Tosin Abasi & his 8-string geetar, mama!

Further (if a whole nother direction is "further" :idk) there's an update on Gary Lucas, the last former Beefheart Band guitarist, now taking the stage w/funky Nona Hendrix :puff: in a sorta Zappa-plays-Zappa "keep the memory/magic goin'"

Still haven't gotten my copy this month(?), but Animals As Leaders are from D.C., and they've taken ERG's out of the djent camp (if you don't now what it is, it's not worth looking up, I promise) into another realm.

I subscribe to a batch of guitar mags (GP, Guitar World - the least interesting and least read by me but it came free with GP -, Premier Guitar, Vintage Guitar) and it's hard to keep track of who is profiled in what (unless they do a pictorial on their guitar collection, then I know it's VG), but Tosin seems well-covered in the guitar magazine world. Is this the first GP feature?

Was the change in Editor over the "direction" of the magazine? I can see how sales maybe plays into it... I subscribe to GP, VG and Premier Guitar because they each have a different focus/direction. VG has evolved from a kind of dealer/collector thing to a love of the instrument and people who used it well over the decades. PG is a gear magazine, but with some good looks at the people who use it. GP is about playing and players. I don't find much of interest in GW because it seems focused on genres I'm not interested in that much and is full of tab transcriptions, which I don't use (my ear is much faster) and don't play the music they tend to focus on...

In GP, I read the stories on artists I'm not interested in because I find the interviews worthwhile... GW (same publisher, right?) doesn't seem to get that for me... but I realize I'm getting older and it seems to be aimed at teens, IMO. I loved GW when I was 13 because it seemed "hipper" than GP at the time and covered more players I liked. Then the hair metal years dawned in full and I stopped reading any of them (I was a punk/"college rock" guy) for the most part, unless somebody I cared about was on the cover, which was rare.

Wow, they give away the bigger seller as a bonus for the mag w/smaller circulation ? Is that odd ?

It's actually the 1st I've heard of him at all.

What I've found odd in this recent series of events is that there seem to've actually been more Molenda bylines after his editorial abt being replaced...& that no one was plugged into that position til a couple issues later...& even then MM's listed as exec ed !

BTW, anyone like thae Gary Lucas clips ?

My buddy in New York works with a guy who is a member of Ampevene, a band whose sound has been compared to AAL. I had heard of AAL but not their music, so I checked them out and found out about Mr. Abasi, that was in February. He has been featured onstage with Steve Vai, in one of those weird things Steve does where he puts someone up there but they don`t actually play, at least not audibly.

Same old surprises, brand new cliches-

Couldn't get a fix on ERG.

What's that ?

Extended

Range

Guitar

Basically, 7+ strings, and oftenfan-fretted multiscale.

@Dannyalcatraz - thanks for that. Hadn't gotten back in 'til this AM.

FWIW, I'm ready to retire all my 'normal' Guitars, except my SG's. Next up is a Multi-Scale 7-string, after that, maybe a Fretless?

Thanks t'y'BOTH ! :2thu:

More than welcome, d.

FWIW, older designs like the Fender Bass VI and Baritones are NOT considered ERG's, AFAIK? No one ever used the term to describe Lenny Breau's 7-string, nor George Van Eps' Guitar, either, at least not at the time. There's also a tradition of 7-string Acoustics out of Russia.

The term is most generally applied to modern Instruments, like the wave of 7-string Guitars that surfaced in the late 90's. (Remember Korn?) Now there are 9- and 10-string Guitars, and even 7-string Basses.

Cool that y know abt both Van Eps & LB !

Where would Tuck Andress be w/out them ?

For those who maybe don't

LB deconstructs some folk music

Van Eps, known more for his conceptualizing than as a player, was still worthy enough to record w/both Ella Fitzgerald & Ella Mae Morse :freak:

@d - When I first got my 8-string, I tried to string it so I had both George Van Eps' low "B" on the 8th string and Lenny's high "A" on the 1st, with the middle six in Standard tuning. The .008 held up for a day or two under the tension, before it snapped.

:D:facepalm:

Hey, it was worth the experiment, and it's just one string . . . Good argument for a Multi-Scale Instrument though: shorter scale on the Treble side = lower string tension on that side.

  • 2 weeks later...
I got that issue in the mail, tossed it in my vehicle on the way to work, had the window down while I was on the job and it rained... it's dried out since, a bit wrinkled and rumpled, I'll post back when I've gotten to read it a bit...

Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do?
