My Keyboard / Synth Set-up (Spring 2015)

Recommended Posts

My keyboard set-up has gone through quite a number of changes since just this past Summer/Fall, so I thought that I'd post some updated photos of everything in it's current incarnation. (Pictures of my old rig can be seen here. The only boards that survived the transition were my trusty ROLAND D-50 and AXIS-1 Controller.) A big "thank-you" goes out to my exceedingly generous and giving Wife who made most of this possible. (Good ole wheelin' & dealin' account for the rest.) ;-)

That is a really nice rig. You have plenty of bases covered. What are the two-tier stands you use for this set up?

Thanks! All three of them are vintage 'Invisible Keyboard Stands' that I've had since the late '80's / early '90's. I actually have a fourth Invisble Stand packed away in my shed, (along with other various parts and extra brackets for them) just in case I ever need it. They've always been my favorite type of keyboard-stand and they're pretty tough to find nowadays, so I went into "hoard mode" a long time ago! ;)

I'm slightly envious

My long gone Invisible Stand falls very clearly in the " What was I thinking when I sold that ! " category....

D50! Still have the one I bought new in the late '80s. Great board-fantastic MIDI controller and a unique sound, IMHO.

I've been thinking about a J50 to complement my FA rig. More supernatural sounds in the Jupiter, especially brass which is not included on the FA. The FA has limited s/n strings as well, only a few patches, though they are versatile and very good.

Live: Korg Kronos 2 88, Nord Electro 5d Nord Lead A1

Toys: Roland FA08, Novation Ultranova, Moog LP, Roland SP-404SX, Roland JX10,Emu MK6

Oh, the horror! :oYou have my deepest sympathies, Sir. :(

My feelings exactly. It was my main instrument while playing in a band in High-School, and the first keyboard that I ever really 'connected' with, programming-wise. Even though it's a bit dated, I'll always own one. (And they still sound great too, as far as I'm concerned!) :2thu:

To be honest, I was a little afraid of this as well after I'd decided to go ahead and get an FA-08. (I'd already purchased the JUPITER-50 several months before.) I basically bought the FA-08 because I wanted something with 88-weighted piano-type keys and so, after much deliberation, I finally thought "What the heck! Why not?" Once it arrived however, I quickly realized that everything that DanL said about the differences between the two instruments is correct. (At least from my limited experience anyway.)

There are some amazingly rich and complex, lush sounds in the JUPITER-50 that I just haven't been able to coax out of the FA-08 yet. Also, the actual keybed on the JUPITER itself is simply amazing! It's one of the best feeling synth actions that I've ever played! (Plus, is there ever really such a thing as having "too many keyboards"? I think not.) :D

I completely agree with everything that you said, DanL. You're absolutely correct. As much as I love the FA-08, (and make no mistake...I really do love the thing!), there's something very special and unique to me about the sound of the JUPITER-50 after having played one for awhile. (And by the way, at the new price of only $1,499.00, they're an absolute steal for what you're getting as far as I'm concerned. I'd highly recommend getting one to anybody who's on the fence about it.) :thu:
