RobertLauriston
There's a sound in some of Raymond Scott's Electronium pieces that I don't think I've heard anywhere else and I can't figure out how he got it. Sounds like pulse-width modulation, or maybe ring modulation but without the usual pattern of overtones. The "Wild Piece" uses it more or less exclusively: http://www.amazon.com/The-Wild-Piece/dp/B000QQ6TSU Any ideas?
mate stubb
Sounds to me like the metallic overtones you get from a comb filter. Moe ---
marino
Don't know how he did it, but to my ears, it sounds like some kind of resonator (like in the Lexicon PCM processors) or some other circuit working with tuned feedbacks. Could be FM too, but I don't think he could do perfectly-in-tune FM at the time. It does NOT sound like ring modulation to me.
RobertLauriston
Here's the full track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62lj2eJm-hM It was a custom analog circuit and the piece was recorded in December 1969. This patent from shortly before that that have some clues: http://www.google.com/patents/US3587094
