OT- beach towns

Recommended Posts

Hey all, this is pretty off topic, but since its such an active forum, I'm sure someone will offer some advice. My friends and I (about 10 guys) want to live near the beach this summer, but we can't decide on where to stay. The three top choices are Virginia Beach, the Jersey Shore, and Charleston SC. I was wondering if any low downers out there are knowledgable about any of these places and can offer their opinion. The most important criteria are: a not too trashy area stuff to do for college kids (nightlife) lots of cheap houses to rent But just so you don't all think this is completely off topic, we DO plan on gigging!!! Five of us guys were in a band together in high school, and would love to snag the occasional gig this summer between our day jobs and partying. So if you've gigged in any of those 3 towns (VA beach, Jersey Shore, Charleston), how did it go?

I lived in Virginia beach for over a decade, now living in Ghent, Norfolk Virginia. You can live in Sandbridge, which is part of Va Beach......however start lookin for rentals now. They can be quite high. Or the front, which is tourist hell in the summer. However the nightlife is pretty intense, and of course its all walking bar to bar. Rentals off the beaten path near the front (resort area) aren't so bad, but again look ahead of time. Good luck. P.S. Gigging can be difficult but not impossible, if you're not a known act, or a touring act. I suggest you do a google search for agents in the area and find someone to shop you around. Hopefully you have a press kit, and/or at least a recording that represents what you do live. Fronting a press kit with a super slick studio recording that sounds nothing like you do live, won't cut it. David Klages is a good place to start or here http://www.710.com/reload/agents.htm
Down like a dollar comin up against a yen, doin pretty good for the shape I'm in

I live out west now, but grew up and gigged all up and down the East Coast. Of everyplace you've mentioned, I would vote Va Beach. My favorite beach/gig situation was always the west coast of Florida. I still think of going back there to live someday.

I love the beach - So ,what the hell am i doing in rochester? Cape May is very nice- but not cheap. Ocean city or Myrtle beach seem more suited to college romping and may offer better values. Fire Island or other parts of eastern LI are really nice. FYI- The Hamptons are not the only place to be. Still, all are kind of expensive driven by proximity to NYC. The outer banks are desolate but nice. May find some bargains there. In Fla consider Key West, South Beach,- both are real party towns. Marco Island Fla. is quiet. Some of the towns on the east side of Fla may also be of interest. I like Vero Beach or Cocoa Beach. Man, you've got my head stuck on this- and Im at work in 35 degree Rochester- THANKS ALLOT. :(
