Just for something different I thought I would try to add some "funk" songs to the set list. First ones should be "easy" so I can get buy in... Suggestions? Thanks....

It's not really funk, but we get a good reception with 'Rapper's Delight' which we slot into our usual pub covers set.

You have a weird combination of proto-rap combined with a classic Bernie Edwards disco bass line. But it works well for us.

You can even get some audience call and response going ("I said Yeah" etc etc). And if you have the BVs you could switch to the 'Good Times' chorus in the middle of the song.

Cheers

I'm not going to argue about whether it's Funk or R&B,

Mustang Sally

Soul Makossa

Sneakin' Sally thru the Alley

Thunder Chicken (Mighty Imperials)

Can't Get Next To You (Nighthawks Cover)

Bustin' Loose (Chuck Brown)

Outta-Space (Billy Preston, much easier thatn it sounds, and funky!)

Free Ride (Edgar Winter)

Soul Sister (Sam & Dave)

Midnight Hour

Knock On Wood

Groove Me

Guitar solos last 30 seconds, the bass line lasts for the whole song.

Lucky Peterson's version of the Isley's hit "It's Your Thing", with Johnny B. Gayden on bass and Dennis Chambers on drums.

And Stevie Wonder's "You Haven't Done Nothin".

Doesn't every bar band in the world do "Play That Funky Music" by Buck Cherry? Worth learning if you haven't already.

Uh, that's Wild Cherry, Junior.

I heard a wedding band doing it last year, and on the bridge ("and they were dancin', and singin', and movin' to the groovin'...") the guitarist and bass player started vamping Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" underneath it.

I almost peed my pants I was laughing so hard. But it worked.
