M Peasley
It's been a while since I've run across anything very compelling in the techno-electronic-IDM-ambient-chill, sampling hip-hop, etc etc world. Last few things I've bought - Boards of Canada, Amon Tobin, Underworld...all okay, but nothing really in very new creative territory. Where's the new, mind-blowing stuff? Has this type of music seen it's day? To my taste, this type of music was far and away the most inventive and exciting stuff during the 90s. But so far in the 00s, pretty moribund.... the stranger
It's not new, but did you ever here the "Run Lola Run" soundtrack? It's a good one. I'm not any kind of techno expert, but this album is great.
Loopy C
To find the innovation you need a source into the underground scene for white labels, etc. Barring that let me suggest a couple of magazines I have used to find the "gravy in the cesspool". The Wire (subtitle "Adventures In Modern Music")- Kinda says it all, the sampler CD's you get as a subscriber have led me to many great discoveries. I used to track down their yearly best of list, many I had never heard of became favorites (Mouse On Mars, Pram, Tortoise, etc. www.thewire.co.uk Grooves-Another great source, mainly electronica (which is the encompassing catagory in my mind of all the sub-genres. www.groovesmag.com ei-brand new one, looks promising. Features, 100+ reviews. www.ei-mag.com Check the websites for more on these, the large review sections in all of them ought to keep you busy. Chris R. Chest Rockwell
Bonobo - "Dial M for Monkey". I have not been able to take this one out of the CD player for weeks. Its brilliant!! Simon Green took his music to the next level for sure.By the way, I too am a big fan of Boards, Amon Tobin, ect. Paris ;)
Monkey Mouse
I don't know if you like/ever heard music by DJn Tiesto, but his stuff is always first rate, whether it be his own or just a remix of someone else's music. He just released a double CD called "Nyana" that has some amazing tunes on it, although it is mixed. I bought all the vinyl I could get my hands on from the CD, its all good. Live 6, Battery 3, Project 5, Atmosphere, Albino 2, Minimoog V, Oddity, Nord 2X, Proteus 2K ***I can't play for sh*t, but I can sequence like a muthaf*ck*r***
techristian
If the other techno artists are anything like me, that would partly explain "the slump" as you call it. Because I record almost ALL of my tracks by myself and do everything else associated with the production and music videos ,it as been almost 5 years since my last CD production. I expect my next CD out "soon" My stuff is more in the "technopop" category, though. I'm working on these projects 2-3 hours per day part time, but even if I worked on it full time I expect that I would need time off to "breath" and could maybe produce a CD every 2 years . When I say "breath" I mean that I must step back from each song for a month or 2 at a time and then come back later with "fresh ears". This helps me to hear the music more as an outsider. I can get most of the tracks layed down in 2-4 hours running a muti-track JAM SESSION 20 minutes long, but then it can take another 60 hours of tweaking and editing , for that same jam, to get a "commercial" sound. alcohol
Didn't techno just morph into Diwali? Some syncopation on the drum beat was necessary, wasn' it?
