Chad Thorne
We want to play this in my band. Who can tell me what the effect is on the bass on that O'Jays recording? Sounds like a phase shifter or flanger to me. Is there an effect currently available that will give me something close to that sound?
_Sweet Willie_
Flanger. Pick. Muting. Anthony Jackson is the player. There's a BP issue from the past year or two (I think) that has an article about the track. Maybe try to editors' forum for info. Peace.--SW spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Chad Thorne
You guys are the best! Thanks! So are phase shifters for bass still available?
SmittyG
I don't know of one specifically for the bass but the Boss one is OK and I really love the Small Stone from EHX. You do get low frequency suckage, but that sort of goes with the territory of the effect. The groove is in the spaces.
BenLoy
The bass POD pro has a setting that duplicates Anthony's tone on that recording exactly. It's a Fender P-Bass played with a pick through a "silverface" Fender Bassman with an MXR Phase 90 and some reverb.
SteveC
The Pod has a setting for this. Oops. Too slow.
Jode
Side note: the O'Jays asked Anthony Jackson to write a riff to intro the song. He was only a session player hired for the gig, but the opening bass line became so iconic, they added him to the writing credits later. (Well, to the degree that Anthony Jackson is "only" a session player... ) "I had to have something, and it wasn't there. I couldn't go down the street and buy it, so I built it." ZZ Thorn
I could have sworn Jackson used a Fender Jazz with roundwound strings. To me the singing in the second half of the song is just as good as the bassline. And it was all done in only 2 takes! http://www.myspace.com/themoustachioed
saxofunk
Edited by ZZ Thorn (12-04-2007 11:07 AM) Edit Reason: What, I gotta tell you why I edited it? I'd like to see you make me. I edited it cuz it needed some editin'. If I didn't want to edit it, I wouldn't have, but I did, so I did it 90% of "Money" is feel and the other half is muting. saxofunk
PPS - I have heard ...Money copped well enough with a Boss AW-3, the average Joe will know no difference. (I didn't, then I bought an AW-3) - Matt W.
Chad Thorne
Whoo! I scored a Small Stone this afternoon and just tried it out. Close enough for me! And as AJ is a bass player I really respect, it pleases me that's he's the guy playing that riff on FTLOM. What a difference from his playing with Michel Camillo! rizzo9247
I used my line6 toneport for this one, silverface amp model, delay, and phaser. I did this in one run, please do not be harsh... Edit: I just read previous posts indicating other effects, but I already uploaded this one and I'm not going to re-record loveofmoney.mp3 - 0.24MB -Anthony
Chad Thorne
A footnote: I set up my rig with the Small Stone tonight, got out my pick, and played the "Money" lick for my wife. She was suitably impressed. Then she said, "Let me get this straight - you bought this for one song?" http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e397/reifspano/Smileys/muttley.gif

Roscoe East
The bass POD pro has a setting that duplicates Anthony's tone on that recording exactly. It's a Fender P-Bass played with a pick through a "silverface" Fender Bassman with an MXR Phase 90 and some reverb. I'd swear I read an AJ interview where he said it was a Maestro Phase Shifter (not an MXR Phase 90).
