Is Your Music Any Good? Find Out Here!!

hey knunchucksammy. Don't knock the tele. they are great sometimes. you have to know how to get the best tone out of it just like any instrument. kirt cobain had terible guitars but they sounded better than some garage band. same thing goes for drums. if you know how to tune really well you can make almost any set sound pretty damn good. that doesn't aply to cymbals and strings. you should try to upgrade to some beefier strings. the way that they react to being played is unbelievable when you start playing 11's. especially on your paul. I play a 75 les paul deluxe on most stuff. otherwise I have a tele and a strat. both are incredible. the paul is just so classic that it literaly brings tears to my eyes. but don't just jump into playing 11's you want to use 10's for a little while and work out with a GRIPMASTER. You can get them at any walmart. Good God! No offence but that is a lot to pay for that demo. maybe that is cali for you but I do pretty kick ass demos for a bit cheaper here. of course this city is pretty much the most studio infested place in the world. next to LA and nyc, so the rates here are unbelievable. every body and their brother has a protools rig out here. me, I just use the ADATs and spend all my time keeping noise from seeping into my song. keep the comments coming, please. I am trying to learn as much as I can about what I am doing wrong so that I can produce my own album. because I can't afford to have someone else do it. No record company to pay my bills. I got so sick of the other forum I have been on(which should remain un-named for my protection and yours, they have eyes and ears everywhere). you could post your music and all you would get is "Hey great job" or "I really like that". No one would just be brutally honest. I think I speak for everyone when I say that honesty is the best policy when it comes to music. that is the only way that my music has come to not sound like I recorded it in my bed room. and I did. so I want it to sound like it came from a bad ass studio when I go to a fairly good studio. I think we all do. no one wants their product to sound bad. I think... I have already seen that you guys are very critical and that is an incredible thing. I like this forum and its people. So if you could please help me with my mixes. I hear that I could improve my mids. i am mixing on ns10s. Suck!!!!. totaly unreliable. but I know them pretty well. so what is the difference between my mix and the pros? how can I improve? I am also doing the mastering on tracks. only maximizing and adding a touch of highs because I have a mackie with only a high eq set at 12 khz. I am really hoping to get some help from the pros and this is the only place I would come. I will be posting more stuff really soon so you can get a better idea. I know I post really long messages but I am making up for some complex my highschool counsilor told me I had. j/k. :D thanks for your attention. and thank you craig.

So this is just an example of how 45 year old men rock, never mind the recording's lack of clarity, just take it for what it is. Hope you enjoy it. http://www.moaninglisas.com/real/4x4girl.mp3
Hey Geenard, Fun Tune. I like the variation on Hubert Sumlin's "Smokestack Lightning" lick. You're singer sounds like the owner of this club we used to play who liked to sit in with us and do "Roadhouse Blues". Loud, raucous and fun. Out of curiosity, where were the mics placed for this recording?

Is this really the only possible rhythm one can dance to?? There are endless possibilities for creating fabulous rhythms for your (trance) tunes, not just this freaking "bum,bum,bum,bum...", imho.

This is the latest mix of a tune I put out here a few months ago. I seem to be having some web space issues this morning so if the link doesn't work, I'll fix it tomorrow. http://my.execpc.com/~wpwmew/YDHTLMr2.mp3 It may not be the greatest tune but the ridiculously long title should be worth something. :D It's called "You Didn't Have To Leave Me (But Now That You're Gone I'm Glad).

I only do what I know how to do! :) Yeah Big AL....our front man, is a trip. His idol is and was Country Dick Montana, as well as Mojo Nixon. 4X4 Girl was drawn from a lick I've been doing since high school, and Al wrote his lyrics to it. Actually the mic was at the back of the room with the recorder. We are trying to get Paul Johnson of the Waxing Poetics to come down from Northern Virginia and both record us live and produce a studio version. We've already written together with a song called "Something to Eat". Which is basically electric bluegrass. Lots of fun. If you're ever down this way, check us out......I'm good for a few rounds of your favorite beverage. :)

Ok, I´m gonna play here too... --------------------------------- Since I have new toys, I have been working on new versions of my previous material and some new songs that I would like to share with you. Give a try to "Déjate Amar" (Let me love you) . It's a House / Pop tune. It has evolved during the years. Some of our friends here have the original version. If you're not really in the mood for a dance tune, try an EBM tune (more kinda an electronic rock - techno thing): Imagino ( I Imagine) or what's being our new single: El factor Animal ( The Animal factor ) . This one was in the first "Keyboard Corner Compilation": Standing in the Rain . It's also a new version of the original. Love it or leave it... just don't kill me :D

Not my music, but done at my studio... Southern Jam style music. http://www.mcivormann.com/home.html - check the music page for the tunes. My fav track: http://www.mcivormann.com/music/straight_mans_line.mp3 These guys came in with a very limited budget and we tracked, mixed, mastered five tunes in 2 days. It was pretty much a "Live" in the studio type recording with only VOX and limited guitar lead repair o'dubs. No time and/or budget for anything else. Most tunes are from 2nd or 3rd take. They were looking for "demo" quality - not for CD release. For the time we had, I'm really happy with it. Very 70's sound - all done in Nuendo - no outboard. All verb is TC/PC Classic - no time to futz with the outboards.

Some how the kick got lost in the mix. It was recorded on only eight tracks so the drums were mixed down to two. I actually thought about overdubbing a kick into the recording but we recorded without a click track and I don't have enough hours to hunt down all of the proper spots. The organ was a 1971 B3 & Leslie played by our own Bud Farr. He's kinda old & cranky since he quit drinking but the guy is easily the most soulful keyboard player I've ever worked with. Here's him at a gig: http://my.execpc.com/~wpwmew/bud1.jpg The guitar sound in the middle break is my own very low-budget imitation Leslie. Kind of embarrassing, actually but it's just a maxed Boss Chorus fed into a tremolo. I keep them at just slightly different speeds to get an approximation of the Doppler effect of a true Leslie. Anyway, the vocals and guitars are all me and the only overdubbed parts. the rest was all recorded live in a marathon weekend at my house. A side note... My studio is in the basement but I'd-a been damned if I was going to haul that B3 up & down the narrow stairs so Bud played upstairs in the family room while the other three of us were down in the studio. We ran the bass direct and had my guitar amp isolated in the next room. My band's been around for more than a few years. If you'd like to know more about us, look here and follow the links at the bottom (Iknow the website is in serious need of some TLC. I'll try to get to it next week): http://my.execpc.com/~wpwmew/

Here is my latest written in it's entirety on Feb. 14th, 2003. I have not laid down the strings section, or other layers, but this is complete enough to give a good idea of what's going on. I created a web page that shows the lyrics, and also I placed the chords accordingly over the lyrics below the lyric sheet; to the best of my "VERY" limited music ability (I've just a few private theory lessons at a University along with one credit course of piano)The sound is loaded in as background music, and can also be downloaded by clicking the supplied link. Re: Black Lightning from Llib Retsof. Where to begin... Starts off sounding a lot like David Gilmore. From there it never seems to go anywhere. What is the intent of this recording? When I used to have time to actually practice, I used to record a basic backing track and work out solos on top of it. This recording sounds a lot like that. Lots of experiments, lots of "going for the dramatic note", but no real direction. Was the purpose of the recording to show that you're not a troll but someone who can actually make some music? You can certainly play. The guitar work is very nice. I have to agree with Sylver that I'm not real fond of the tones or the over abundance of distortion but that is purely subjective opinion. Bottom ine: Good playing, good idea, let's hear it expanded upon with some vocals and melodic direction.

I am suprised with that level of playing that the mix wasn't a little better. I mean, he obviously has an ear. Monitoring may be a problem though. I definately had a "sketch" qualityy to it.
I really don't know what to put here.

I've been trolling this place long enough. It's time to do a little show-and-tell. Notes/disclaimers: This is a jazz band I'm in called "Ballast." I wrote the first tune ("And We're Back"), and play the piano in all three tunes. I did not record this band, since my small setup is not equipped to record a live, 7-piece band. We made these recordings in one day (along with 3 other songs not posted here) in a friend's studio. I intend to post some of my home studio's output as soon as I make something worth posting. The quality stuff coming from my home studio right now is actually mostly commercials (literally, radio spots with voiceovers & music). My home studio music is more rock and electronica heavy - so the MP3's posted here are about as straight-ahead jazzy as I get. I apologize for the blandness of the MP3 page. I basically set up this bare-bones page so you guys could take a listen. I look forward to your feedback! Thanks! http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/536/the_ballast.html

Did you score all of the parts or did the various members come up with them? I love the bass line. Nice and punchy with out going over the top. The drummer brings a nice modern-Jazz feel to an otherwise very traditional piece. Kinda Yellow Jackets-ish IMO. Your piano performance is first rate. Except for the missing guitar part :D , I think it's outstanding. Nice job.

Impressed me as kind of a cross between "Blow by Blow" era Jeff Beck and Neil Young. Subjectively speaking as the tone snob that I am, I'm not real fond of most of the synth sounds. I particularly think that the Pan Pipe sound has been used to death. And the guitar was a bit too compressed for me. But that's just me. Objectively, I thought the performance was quite good. I'm listening on an office system with crappy speakers so I really can't comment decently on the mix.

Thanks for the positive feedback, PBBPaul!
Originally posted by PBBPaul: It's got a very deceptive simplistic vibe to it.
Yeah - intentionally so. The chord chart looks like hell on wheels, but the song certainly doesn't sound like it.
Did you score all of the parts or did the various members come up with them? I love the bass line.
The horns just play the melody in unison throughout the song, so I suppose you could say I scored the horns. I gave the drummer direction, but he's good enough to figure things out himself. As for the bassist - I wrote the bass line, and he plays variations of this written line throughout the song. Almost every chord was written as a suspension (or a superimposed chord), so the bass rarely sits at the bottom, at the root, where you would expect it to be. That's where the song gets deceptive, in my opinion.
Except for the missing guitar part :D , I think it's outstanding.
We actually had to drop the guitar player; he kept skipping rehearsals. I know, I know: an irresponsible guitar player? Impossible! We've just got lousy luck, I guess. :p Thanks again.

The drums are a little quite and repetitive. The lead strings could be a little less mono. By that I mean they may fair better with a little layering, panning and a bit of chorus perhaps. Over all not a bad track musically but could use a bit more variation. Perhaps a break down or some sort of change up? Particularly in the drums. Overall nice job. - DJDM
