  1. pianoman chuck is saying that Studiologic will be revealing something--can't find another source for this--, and Yamaha will as well, though when I checked their website a week ago it just said they were showcasing MontageM and Genos 2.

Have been going through the demos and thinking of pulling the trigger for Standard.  Wondering if I can use 1 account on both a Windows laptop and an Ipad, and if so, what would be the proper way of doing this.  Would seem to me downloading off of Apple App store and paying there is wrong way to do this.

You should be able to use multiple activations of the software throughout several devices, regardless of brand. : )

I prefer Wavestate native because everything is so up-front

I've been messing with the demo this past week, that thing gives me goosebumps sometimes. I did an album 4 years ago where I used the Wavestation VST because I was using a lot of sustained chords and wanted there to be a sense of motion throughout. It got the job done, but it felt like I was using an antiquated instrument. wavestate native has blown me away.

I would really like Korg to get something like this in around 34-35 pounds.

Korg's been a blizzard of activity lately, surely there's gotta be a D2 in the mix somewhere!

Tonight's article: Korg KoolKorg Fridge coming soon in 2024, refrigerator and synthesizer/sequencer. Inspiration comes anytime, any place, even when you're pulling out ingredients for dinner! (Ever heard of fridge logic?) Use the KoolFridge to quickly and intuitively record your cool ideas!  (4 tracks, 192 polyphony)

Christ, Korg are on fire. Just went to Musicradar and nearly every article is new Korg gear.

Grandstage, new MicroKorg, new KingKorg, updated Korg Gadget, new NTS1, apparently a new NTS that hasn't been cleared for people to reveal yet, desktop versions of three recent synths (all truly excellent in sound capability and interface in their given fields btw), Chopin piano, anything else?

  7. I'm so excited for this thing, and to hear the latest generation of Korg VA, after all these years of absence. If you consider the Kronos etc to be derivative of Oasys in 05, that means their last VA was Radias/derivatives and possibly OG KingKorg!

Hey Dave! I'm super-interested in Pianoverse, on the strength of the demos on their site, especially the ones by Montesanti. The YF sounds pretty amazing, but there is only one way to find out for real, of course. How does it compare to your other libraries?

Since we're on the topic: I have no problems putting out $15 for a month trial, basically, but I'm concerned about resource intensive these are.

I certainly find sampled pianos "bigger and warmer" than modeling, Menno. I was just "A/B ing" Pianoteq with IK's Pianoverse last evening.

Certainly there will be times that Pianoteq sits better "in the mix", but for just solo playing at home for my own enjoyment I'm playing sampled pianos.

Yeah, I was testing out the new Steinway NY D last night and I was sad to note that it still sounds sharp, "boomy", and thin. For months and months I'll revisit it, trying mic placements, soundboard adjustments, hammer hardness, reverb, lid off, everything I can think of, and I still don't get a sound I enjoy. Ive even downloaded fxps from users in an attempt to find something.

Then I pop over to another library like Ravenscrof, Keyscape, or Garritan, and instantly I hear this body and presence.

I don't appreciate it when sharing these difficulties, that PTeq users come up with a litany of the most convoluted, tangential potential solutions to these issues, when really, I think it's the fundamentals I can't get along with.

I still really want Modartt to succeed, though, and eagerly check out every update they put out.

Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.  It tends to be 'snippy and has a swollow the note type of effect along with the snip' in the upper registers for lack of better terms..... Responds well though in terms of other things that is true and enjoyable often but the metallic/plasticness of it and the above does get to me.

I've had it since version 5 or 6 I think! I still upgrade every time... I have the Stage edition....no need to upgrade to the larger versions.

I don't know what snippy and swollow mean, yet somehow I agree with every word you wrote.

No AN-X? Not much new ground broken, here. Kind of blah. The workflow had better be outstanding or sales are going to be slack. My old AN-200 has AN and AWM, for pity's sake and it's how old?

Yamaha has a goldmine waiting for them to pick, with a standalone AN-X synth as a competitor to the likes of Roland Gaia or the Minilogue. It's cool that this seqtrack has FM-X, but with the focus more on sequencing than sound programming, I think we're a long way from their answer to opsix (which if we're being honest, probably wouldn't move much, unfortunately).

This kind of thing really annoys me, unless the previous version can live alongside the new one (which AFAIK it can't), as it essentially breaks any current projects you may have that use the old sounds/voicing.  i.e. Currently mixing albums for 3 different clients and all use Pianoteq 8  in some capacity.  Installing the new update on my DAW computer (which obviously i won't be doing now) will effectively change any mixes that use Pianoteq.  Please be thoughtful like Reaper and include "old version behavior" as an option when things change that can break past behavior. Rant over. ;)

I haven't had a chance to check this out, I don't know if PTeq overwrites each version with an update, or if you download a separate instance of the updated plugin, like Kontakt for example.

  13. Heads up, 8.2 is out! I love the parameters and interface of Pianoteq, but I'm still in the camp that can't get on with the sound. I'm convinced that they will gradually march on to become better and better, and hopefully the recent update is another benchmark of that progress!

    Changelog:

    8.2.0 (1/14/2024)

Revoicing of all 11 modern grand pianos.

Fret buzz sound added to the Classical Guitar instrument.

Two new tunings for the guitar: EADF#BE and DADGAD.

MIDI sequence transposition added in the sequence context menu.

New midimapping for changing the tuning root key.

Interesting, was "safe shipping" something you had to add?  I've only shipped one keyboard via Reverb and that was a few years ago.   Having those crap package handlers destroy gear is one of my big fears about selling.  I've seen gear destroyed, and that's two examples just above.

Someone also mentioned Reverb's shipping prices, which suggested that they pay shipping perhaps?  Something else to read up on.

Safe shipping is an optional service you can opt into for a fee, dependant on the value of the item you're selling, I believe.  Even though you always want to assume everything goes well, I always opt in...a couple years ago I sold a Numa Organ, really well packed, yet somehow over delivery got a huge crack on the side. Safe shipping saved my ass big time, I wasn't penalized at all, and the buyer also received a partial refund from Reverb for the damage.

For items over $1,500, safe shipping is mandatory.

If you buy a label through Reverb, you get oftentimes a strong discount on the shipping than if you were to pay for one straight at the delivery provider. I sold the aforementioned CP88 this past weekend on Reverb (sorry GX), and I probably saved close to 50% on shipping costs by purchasing a label through Reverb. You just have to report the dimensions and weight. Another benefit is that if you buy labels through Reverb, you get paid the day after the delivery provider scans it in their system. The tracking info is also then readily available for the buyer to view.

Korg labels them like this but they are fully configurable in their editor software. You can assign any midi control change number you want, to control anything.

On my NK1 I have the transport buttons sending control changes that change my leslie speed, turn on percussion, etc. They're labeled as transport controls but don't transport anything!

Good to know! So if you have the transport controls mapped to parameters such as rotary, do you have other buttons somewhere dedicated to turning on/off instruments for layering etc? (I imagine you'd want to turn them off rather than muting for CPU usage?)

Those are some nice perks. Question: Is the overall quality of used gear at GC generally lower than the other options? The gear in the used section at my local GC has looked pretty rough. Or sampling error on my behalf?

I've had bad experiences buying used from GC. Got a PX5S used from them last year, listed in very good condition...it arrives, there's chipped keys, orange stains that didn't come out, and the most disgusting sticky layer of dust on the keys. To top it off, it had the firmware issue. I fixed that, cleaned up the keys, and took it back to my local store (which is indeed nice), letting them know that the GC location I bought this from made a huge mistake in labelling the condition. They said sorry for the experience, and out of curiosity, I checked the local inventory online a few days later...there the PX5S was, chipped keys and stained, listed in "Excellent" condition.

This was just one instance, obviously, but it put a taste in my mouth that's hard to remove. The past few months, I've also noticed a huge amount of mislabeled instruments.
