suggestions for iPad holder, using K&M stand
sam6599643 replied to LeesKeys's topic in The Keyboard Corner
Note the 12.9 iPad is prone to bending slightly. And if you take one in for service they can attempt to use this to argue that your warranty is invalid because you abused the product, although its actually due to a poor design choice. -
“main driver” is not really the poiht. The point is standalone hardware is being deliberately designed to necessitate tethering and connection. As for “paranoia” review the disclosures on any Roland app in te few cases where the App Store requires them. It’s quite an extensive data suck. So that’s factual. The big data is a subject for another thread. But this equipment is being taken in a clear direction that we can see. And it’s not for user benefit. I would have hard time recommending this. There are better wars to design and deliver entry level equipment.

There is an additional factor of its not just a matter of unlocking the device. The owner is also being pushed into handing over their personal info, and registering as a user of a service. Depending on the software solution, now you have installed software “drivers” or “app” on your computer or moblile device that is now phoning HQ regularly with your user activity, “diagnostics” etc. Data is the new oil. As Roland is venture capital owned, there is underlying urgency to quickly boost numbers that can be used to make the case for a higher exit valuation, such as number of registered users, or active users, percentage of sales revenue derived from sales of products sold directly to user rather than via third party retailers etc. These kind of factors are now driving product design. And not for the better.

Jimmy Jam said the same as well about his use of gear when they were at their peak - he wanted the gear with presents that inspired him and he would just run off with it from there Makes sense when you look at the incredible volume of material they put out when they were at their peak. Time was money. If you can work with tweaking presets then you can crank out hits faster, instead of spending a lot of time making sounds. For people whos time is worth rather less, probably no its not so convincing to complain about presets.

Rick Beato goes mainstream
sam6599643 replied to GRollins's topic in Craig Anderton's Sound, Studio, and Stage
Michael McDonald is one of my favourites. You’ll find however that Questlove long ago did an epic interview of him, hours-long career deep dive, from his beginnings in St Lous to Steely Dan, Doobie, you name it. Am pretty sure Questlove did George Benson too. All available on podcasts and does not consume video bandwidth. I stopped subscribing to his channel when I saw too much clickbait. Look at at it now still see offerings such as “UMG vs Tik Tok - sh&% just got real” or “The Most Insane Music Interview”, “This Playing is Completely Insane”, “I’ve Changed my Mind off This”. Am pretty sure this type of brain numbing stuff is not necessary in any framework other than maximising the lowest common demonisation of the algorithm ie money chasing. I avoid anyone who dabbles in that kind of framing and content - it’s mentally corrosive. Also a lot of it actually uses the video format properly. Waste of bandwidth. Does not need to be a view stream. -

The titles of his videos are now a compendium of YouTube clickbait strategies. The content seems to be lighter and lighter. It’s trendy slick YouTube “influencer” stuff. Not coming from a place of I will pursue my passion authentically. Now he is cashing in on what used to be possibly his authenticity. That’s what I see. -
The 18880 has been around for quite a while, seems to have sold well - and so they pop up regularly on the used market, if you keep an eye out.

So what’s happened so far with your experience with the Bop Pad?

Roland digital piano chat/ FP10/30x/90x etc. I'm

Thanks that rules it out for me. Anything where these drivers are required is planned obsolescence. -

Does the RD-2000 connect both midi and audio in/out over USB…..without having to install proprietary Roland drivers on the laptop? Or only midi ? -
Let’s end the year with an iOS Rhodes shootout, shall we?
sam6599643 replied to drawback's topic in The Keyboard Corner
But you have a keyboard already. Maybe it just doesn't have a good Rhodes sound. And you might just want the one Rhodes for a specific song. Well, if so, actually there's a good one right there - free. No Shopping. That's all I am saying. I just notice that we end up selling everyone on buying endless one-trick apps. And we forget that there are free tools also there that should probably be the first recommendation. And then if you have a special need then OK the n-th app comes into it. -

Not a problem as such. You play that sound for the son. You put it away and you play something else. There is no law that you have to play a million sounds at once all by yourself or that your keyboard must be the mixer. But a very good instrument already coming free with the device should not be overlooked so easily. -

A very good overview. A gaping hole though is that if you are on ios then you have garageband built in for free - and in there is included a rhodes instrument, generically named “Electric Piano”. So if doing an iOS overview, probably a better approach would be to do a review of that built-in free instruments, then pick out what can you get over and above that, if anything, from paying for an app with another rhodes. -
World's easiest "hack" to add an ipad music stand to the K&M 18880
sam6599643 replied to obxa's topic in The Keyboard Corner
Get the K&M Stacker “A” for that stand and clamp the K&M 115/2 to it. Or get the K&M 18807 and clamp that to the leg -
Tell the difference: Rhodes vs. Wurli
sam6599643 replied to Delaware Dave's topic in The Keyboard Corner
I’d put it the other way - for me the Rhodes is very distinctive at the upper end and rarely confusable with the Wurlie. -
Actually the Juno-X (which seemed to come to market very late on curve in the neo-synthwave pop culture trend) did not look like that strong a seller last I checked in the Thomann product sales rankings earlier this year. Nor did the Jupiter X. Nor the Fantom plattform. I suspect that all those product have not met expectations, as they are supposed to be cash cows in the Roland linduk, basically rehashing old hits at high prices. It is their mini-synth boxes that are the ones selling well, but at a lower price point than these full size synths. Meanwhile, Yamaha is killing it with the recent CK at the mid-lower end, plus the PSR. And I’d think a new Montage would put a hurt on Fantom sales.

Apple Airpod Pros as active & "intelligent" earplugs
sam6599643 replied to Reezekeys's topic in The Keyboard Corner
Its important to note that the Apple Airpods inherent passive noise isolation/blocking capabilities are not that all that strong. The “adaptive transparency” is based on the “noise cancellation” technology - the appearance of reducing external noise. The appearance of…..which is distinct from actually blocking sound. This means that the Airpods are not a replacement for headsets that actually reduce the total SPL that you are exposed to. So its imporant to beware of what this is an is not. This functionality is useful for a hearing impaired person under normal circumstances. But it’s not going to properly protect the hearing of someone who is on stage and exposed to sound levels that can damage hearing. You can read a more quantitative assessment of it here: https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/blog/can-airpods-pro-protect-your-hearing/ -
Plastic does the job, is cheap to manufacture reliably, and is recycleable. Carbon fibre is not cheap to manufacture reliably if you have very high demands for resistance to loads in all directions, which is what you’d need in a keyboard if you want to to withstand some degree of being dropped or banged. And is not recycleable. Or not recycleable without huge costs that outweigh the value of any material recovered. So carbon fibre on mass volume products like these s not really a way forward in a circular economy, which is already one of the mandates that manufacturers will be pressed to follow in the EU for example. So I cant see this becoming a big thing. Maybe on some few niche or very high end keyboards. But not at a mass level.

How great singers' voices have or have not held up over time
sam6599643 replied to bill5's topic in The Keyboard Corner
Angela Winbush: still in shockingly good voice for someone whose biggest hit was back in 1987 or something like that. In fact she’s probably never really had the hits she deserves.
