  1. I have to agree on that one.  While I'm sure it isn't easy to bring a product like this to market, Dexibell's products have too many drawbacks: no internal PSUs, a subpar leslie, pianos and eps that are good, but haven't wowed me, and prices on the higher side.  On the other hand, they do have some cool features, such as the motorized faders on some of their keyboards, the ability to load soundfonts on some keyboards, and built in speakers on a professional level instrument.

    Thx !

    RD-2000 ...

The 800 does not show the 4 buttons under the display.

The RD-2000´s pitch- and mod- wheels are covered by the silver FX box,- which was irritating.

    :)

    A.C.

Looks to me like it is actually an RD700, either the SX, GX, or NX.  The RD2000 has different endcaps and has LED sliders and encoders to the left of the display.

I've never seen a B-to-B cable (I know they exist - just searched & found them, but they are quite uncommon).

The reason why they are quite uncommon is because USB is a master-slave bus, meaning that one device (for example, a computer) is the master, while the controller/printer/hard drive/etc. is the slave.  USB-A is generally what is used by the master device, and B (and it's many smaller derivatives) by the slave device, so as not to cause confusion among end users.

OMG, what edition of the Real Book is this from?  Where's the #9s?  I scanned this from my 5th edition.  It doesn't have the bass figure but at least the chord symbols are a bit more accurate.  Gotta get those #9s in the turnaround.

Let me see what my version says.  (I don't have a Real Book but I know that I have this song photocopied from my friend's, I'll ask him which edition it is)

Of course you took your life into your hands trying to get back onto Rt 4.

Anyone been to Three Wave in Hawthorne NJ recently?

Getting onto Rt 4 hasn't gotten any better in recent years, and soccer moms with their iPhones surely haven't helped.

I tried to go to three wave once, but they don't have very flexible hours (they're open like 11am-6pm Monday-Friday) and they still require you to make an appointment even though Covid has been thankfully fairly nonexistent in the area for at least 6 months.

Although they just raised the prices dohhhh

Or even the PowerBoost hybrid, that even has a 240v receptacle and will for sure have enough juice to get you home after the gig.

  7. As someone who lives in the area I'm very sad to hear.  I didn't even know that it was closed, I've been traveling abroad for the last 6 weeks or so.

That part of New Jersey has had what is known as Blue Laws for many years. It requires stores that sell "non-essential" merchandise to be closed on Sundays. A big reason for the Blue Laws is to reduce heavy traffic on Route 4 and Route 17 in the Bergen County area for one day a week allowing nearby residents to have a somewhat better quality of life.  I doubt if this had much effect on the Paramus Sam Ash as they have survived there under Blue Laws for many years. I don't know about other states but NJ also requires auto dealerships to close on Sunday statewide.

Blue laws are annoying, and they do very little to relieve congestion on 4 and 17 from my experience (I've lived in the area for many years) and are just a general hassle.  It basically prevents businesses in the area from being able to make money on a day when lots of people shop, it is not uncommon for people in bergen to travel to Wayne, NJ or Nanuet right over the NY border on Sundays to buy stuff like electronics and clothing.

The GC up the road on 17 isn't fairing much better.  I dropped in there about 2 months ago, there was a MODX and a used Kronos on display amongst the Williams pianos.

That GC has never had a good selection, the most exciting thing I ever saw there was about 7 weeks ago when I was in there to get a quote on a repair for a friend (he was too busy to get to the store and had an issue with the wiring in one of his basses) and I saw the new Akai MPC Key 61.  I gave it a quick whirl but found the interface a little counterintuitive (that is coming from someone who likes Korg and Kurzweil interfaces).  The sounds were fine, on par with what I would expect from something in a similar price bracket to the MODX, Fantom-0, and Nautilus, although I only heard them in mono through a cheap wedge.

  8. I've never played a gig running off generator power, but I have in the past run FOH sound for events using an inverter, not a generator.  Inverters are much better in my opinion, as they generally have very clean and consistent power coming straight out of the receptacles.  On the few occasions I have used an inverter I was using a mixer that is fairly temperamental about bad power, and often I need to use a surge protector or power conditioner for it, and in this case it was running straight out of the inverter with a speaker amp plugged into the other receptacle.

Truth, how you gonna cover Johnny Cash and Journey with the same vocalist?

This is why I always say that the best cover bands are bands that have multiple lead singers.  Maybe the lead vocalist is great at singing high rock vocals, but when the band wants to do a George Michael tune maybe the bass player has a better voice for that type of music.

Ok,, here is my “I don’t do” list:

    I don’t do horn parts

    I don’t run sound

    I don’t run lights

    I don’t store/transport/ PA gear

I don’t wait weeks or months to get paid

I  don’t spend hours and hours

transcribing top 40 songs  on two days notice  for $45 and $4 from the tip bucket

I don’t rehearse AFTER the gig

feel free to add your own,,,,,

I don't mind doing orchestral stuff that much (but I refuse for that to be the only thing I play the whole night) that is just my personal feeling, but...

I don't run sound from the stage (if you want me to do that, get yourself a different KB player and I'll run sound, to me the mixer is just as important as any other instrument)

I don't transport PA gear unless it is specifically part of my rig (like a submixer, vocoder mic, or wedge/amp for stage volume, not a monitor speaker)

I don't do rehearsals if the other members of the band haven't practiced (rehearsals are for working out kinks and making sure everything sounds cohesive as a unit, not time for the bass player to look at a chart for the first time or for the EVH wannabe to run his solo one more time because he is so awesome)

I don't tolerate musicians who complain about soundcheck (both as a keyboard player and an FOH sound engineer)

I'm sure I'll think of more later

True but the Nord library is added to so rarely, it's hardly the 'agony of choice'...

But the Nord library has also been built up slowly but surely for the last 10+ years since the Stage 2 came out, and there are 3rd party libraries and communities of people who make sounds for the Nord as well.  On the other hand, the YC and CP have nothing of the sort.

  12. To make a long story short, I was asked to play some dinner music tonight for a volunteer event and I need some song suggestions.  The set only has to be around an hour, probably will be less though, so I'm reaching out to my fellow forumites that have more experience in this genre for some suggestions that are fairly easy to play, I don't have really any time to practice.

  13. Another vote for the YC.  Considering you're planning to pay $1800 for the Nord, you could get a brand new YC61 for only $200 more, and used ones go for closer to $1600.  The YC73 is also available used for around the price of a new YC61, just a matter of how many keys and what action you want.  As others have mentioned, the YC has pitch bend and mod sticks, and has iPad integration, which can expand your library of sounds vastly.  In live set mode, the YC also can act as a pretty decent 4 zone master controller, which means you can pair it with some kind of other module down the line.  Combined with the fact that it has a pair of inputs, it would be perfect for this.  The YC73 also adds XLR balanced outputs, which means you won't have to use a DI box anymore.

Also, any of these alternatives (used) should work fine for what you want...

    - Yamaha: MOXF6 or MOX6

    - Korg: Krome or Kross or Triton

    - Kurzweil: PC3-61

    - Roland: Fantom (orig. series, 61-key)

Many of these are older models, but are probably well within your budget.

For best B3 and Farfisa among the above, Kurzweil is best (also great EPs)

For best EPs, I'd go with Yamaha.

Korg and Roland are really better on synthy sounds, but decent enough on the sounds you want.

Not sure the Korgs will have any Farfisa sounds, but they do have Vox sounds.  At least the M3 doesn't have any Farfisa.

    Yeah, that´s good.

But according to my experience, the so called "better" and more expensive actions normally are mechanically more reliable than the cheaper ones.

And I like to keep my keys when these are good and I got used to play ´em.

That´s why I prefer buying a rack/desktop module when it´s time upgrading soundengines because of sonic quality and optimized functionality.

It´s cumbersome adapting to new actions consistently when buying a new piece of gear.

I totally agree about the module thing, I'd much rather keep a keyboard action I like around for years rather than upgrade it just to get a better sound engine.

There's a reason so many pros stuck with their KX88s until the early 2000s, they were just great, reliable controllers with an action that they liked.

  16. One thing I've found that helps with sonic continuity between live miked and direct instruments is to create a bus with a nice room reverb on it and use it as an effects send.  Makes it sound like all the instruments and vocals were recorded together in one room.  In order to do this though, basically all the miked instruments have to be close miked so that there is as little of the natural room tone as possible in the final product.
