I've been playing with a singer/songwriter for the last 25 years. The gig has more & more evolved into an organ centric gig, so I've been wanting to go to a dual manual organ. Her music, however still calls for other sounds- primarily Wurlie, Piano, Mellotron & a few other, mostly organic sounds. So, I just redid my live rig. Yesterday was the first gig with it. I'm only using the SKX's organ & accordion. Everything else is from my Laptop running Gig Performer. Everything worked, yay!

Nice lookin rig!  How has the stability been with GP?  It looks like you are using an older computer, I'm curious how it handles being a VST host.

  2. Now this is something I would buy, even though I'd have to save up more to get it.  My only hesitation is the keybed, but that will have to be seen once it is released.

For 80s stuff, pairing the new 06 with a MODX 8 would be great, you get lots of great acoustic sounds between the 2, the FM synths of the MODX, the analog stuff from the Fantom-0, and the VTW organs.

I imagine Toto would be happy to be included too - helps with ticket sales and all. They're playing the Moda Center (Portland) in a couple of weeks, and there's still seats available - for as little as $45. I'm thinking about going.

I went to the show that they did with Journey at the Prudential Center a few weeks ago, also payed around that price for the tickets, and it was a great concert, both bands still have got 'it.'  (Although Toto sounded way tighter than Journey imo)

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been a joke for decades.

Finally someone else who agrees with me.  There are so many great bands that should be in the RRHOF but for someone reason aren't.  Case in point: Toto.  In terms of their own music, they've had major success worldwide with Africa, Rosanna, and Hold The Line, in addition to a large following in Europe and Japan (when they're on tour in Japan they get recognized in the street), and the members of the band have played on 100s of hit records that came out of LA from the early 70s until today, yet for some reason they have yet to be nominated for anything. (my guess is that like Dolly, they'd probably turn down the induction, like they turned down the cover of Rolling Stone back in the day)  Other bands that have been snubbed from the RRHOF are The Doobie Brothers, Steve Winwood, George Michael, Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, etc.  (I could go on)

Simple and clean for last night!
They're a lot slimmer and lighter than the Kronos 73 and Numa Organ they replaced.

2x Arturia Keylab mkIIs, a Spider Pro, and an XR18 in the little rack on the floor.

Off to the right is the MacBook on a Gibraltar GEMS stand. Powered and MIDI I/O'ed through an OWC USB C hub that's also in the rack.

Also, one of the best little things I've bought in ages - the Korg i3. Got it for one trio gig at Christmas when the drummer couldn't make it.
Paid for itself on that one gig! Love it

Great for little gigs, keys feel ok and it sounds more than fine.

Nice looking rig.  How do you like the keybed on the Arturias?  I've heard both good and bad about them.  Also that second shot looks beautiful, is that Miami or Mexico? (definitely not jealous lol)

Do you know what could be the problem? I plugged everything alright and the output works fine but as I said before my PC doesn't detect de input :(

It's possible that you have a faulty cable, never heard of the brand Otraki before, so I have no idea if their stuff is any good.  If you can, try using a different midi cable or interface with the same PC, if that works, than your cable is bad, if not, then it is a problem either with your PC or the midi out jack on the casio.  Did you try using different USB ports?  Sometimes, depending on the port, it way be internally wired to a different USB controller.  (this can be a problem, I know that a friend of mine had a USB interface that when plugged into a certain set of USB ports on his computer it would have crackling noises, after looking up the motherboard's manual we found out that the problem port was wired to the Marvel USB controller, but the Intel USB controller worked fine)

Ok so my keyboard detects the output signals and when I play something in a digital piano I can hear it from my keyboard, but I downloaded MIDI-OX and I think my PC doesn't detect my keyboar's input

Is it possible you accidentally plugged the midi cables into the wrong jacks?  Maybe you accidentally plugged the one that sends midi from the computer to the keyboard into the keyboard's midi out, and plugged the cable that sends midi to the computer into the keyboard's midi in.  (No shame in that, happens to the best of us, once in the fever of setting up for a gig I plugged the 1/4" cable going to the PA into the sustain pedal jack and then spent the entire soundcheck trying to figure out why the sound was only coming out of the internal speakers)

Can I apply reverb to the B4000+ within the PX5s?  NO

    6 minutes ago, ElmerJFudd said:

Same on the PX-560. The audio is internally wired directly to the Audio out.  No opportunity to apply FX.

Shame, I guess if I go this route I'll have to run a reverb pedal between the Ferrofish and the PX5s.

When buying a used PX-5S check the velocity response on the A# notes. There was a design flaw that caused many to have erratic behavior on A# notes usually on a lower A#. The PX-5S has been in production since at least 2013 and the price for a new one just went up by $100

I'll make sure to check this, is there any fix to the problem?

At first I was also concerned about the lack of expression pedal on the PX-5S, which would be an organ limitation, but then realized the B4000+ has an expression pedal input of its own, so you'd be okay there

Not to worried about that, though it would be nice to have an expression pedal on the PX5s in order to fade in layers.

For synth sounds, keep in mind that the PX5S does not have a mono mode. All sounds are always polyphonic.

I'm sure I can work around this limitation.

  9. After doing much research on different keyboard options, a Casio PX5s and a Ferrofish B4000+ (both used) would cost me around the same as something like a Roland FA08 or a Kurzweil PC3x (also both used), and will give me a more compact setup with a dedicated clonewheel engine that sounds better than either the KB3 engine in the PC3 or the SuperNatural Organ in the FA, plus is will give me physical drawbar control.  This setup also doesn't need mixer, since the PX5s has audio inputs, so my signal chain would be B4000+ -> PX5s -> Amplification/FOH.  My only questions are: can I apply reverb to the B4000+ within the PX5s, and is the PX5s powerful enough as a synthesizer to play 80s tunes?

  10. An option I haven't seen anyone mention so far is buying 'open back' IEMs that allow for some noise to bleed through, I know Westone makes some, not sure the model number though.  This would allow the OP to be able to hear what is going on around him while still sticking to IEMs, and would get rid of the 'underwater' effect.

EDIT: They're called the Westone AM series

  11. As someone who has been a Windows user for the last 7 years (I used a mac before that, which was also before I got into music), those prices to me actually seem pretty reasonable for the hardware.  I have a fairly new laptop that works totally fine (got it summer of 2020), so I don't plan on upgrading any time soon.

Apart from the clear references to the Beatles’ psychedelic era, Seeds of Love has always reminded me of that other great 80s stream-of-consciousness smash by Peter Gabriel, Sledgehammer (pun just popped up! 😆). Wonder if STSOL was influenced by that at all, especially its video?

Maybe both songs were engineered or produced by the same people?  In addition, it's widely known that Peter Gabriel and TFF had Fairlight CMIs and used a lot of Fairlight sounds, so maybe that is why they sound so similar?  (Just a theory)

This is, I think, impossible due to the need to use the left hand on the pitch bender control to get the fiddle slides characteristic of the style.

Not sure if you can do this on the Nords, but maybe you could set up an expression pedal to do the pitch bend and do the bending with your feet.

I snapped this after I started breaking down this evening. Tonight was the first time that I set up my keyboards in an L shape since 1984. No lie. Not extremely practical but I enjoyed it. That's a Fusion on the dreaded X-Stand. First time I've ever used one of those type stands at a gig. It didn't collapse. 👍

Looks nice!  Not sure why, but I've always really liked L shaped keyboard rigs, especially when there is one board serving as a 'master' with the other boards acting as modules, and their internal keybeds are only used when necessary.  If I were you, I would swap the X stand for a double braced one, even with a lighter keyboard like the Fusion, the single brace stands are very wobbly.  That and I once saw the death of a Korg X5 by way of single braced X stand, when the bottom foot snapped off the brace.  It was not a pretty sight.
