  1. This was actually very helpful - I rarely think of opening the filter "all-the-way" and I'm always over-thinking things when twisting knobs. Tonight I just set up two sawtooths and de-tuned them...very nice! I think that's what I was trying to describe in my original post, in that Keith wasn't really doing a lot of programming or modulation. Rather, he used basic tones and just let them rip. I think that fundamental sound is so appealing after swimming in modern electronica for so long...
  2. Wow! That was cool to listen to! Thanks, that really satisfies my ears! I don't know if I want to invest money into all that, but I will read up on that product...
  3. Hi everyone, Not sure if there is something like this out there... I have recently been listening to a few ELP records over and over, and I suddenly realized that deep down I am really just a Moog guy. I've flirted with lots of analog gear over the years (Moog, Dave Smith, Korg, Roland) but really what I want to hear is those gigantic, ripping Tarkus and Brain Salad Surgery Sounds. Do you know what I mean? Keith patched a certain way, very fundamental sounding and not too evolving, but very recognizable. (Hard to describe it properly...) I own nothing Moog at the moment, but do have lots of "Moogy" things (Monark, The Legend, V collection, etc...) As I go through all the different Moog software I own, for every ten that make me go "meh...whatever", there's that one patch where I go, "Oh yeah!" And I realized, lately, those patches that turn me on are of an invariably Keith Emerson flavor, or a retro/early/vintage sound. I want to have that sound coming out of my keyboards all the time! Do any readers know of a patch book where I could learn/patch Keith Emerson's signature sounds? Thanks in advance
  4. I had the chance to play an Origin a few times over the last 10 years. Arturia's current software emulations are much nicer nowadays than the Origin. The other thing I recall, is that the local music store said they were plagued with a lot of problems selling the Origin keyboards. It sounded to me like they were not the greatest quality...
  5. My fave quintet! Wow, that is very cool to watch...
  6. It's funny, I hear a lot of complaints about the Electro action. I myself am not crazy about it either. Why wouldn't NORD just get it right like the VR700 or 730 actions? Or like their Stage Compact actions? An action that is just right for both EPS and organs....
  7. Thanks for the notice - perhaps that will only be in the USA? We'll probably find out shortly....!
  8. Thanks for that note. I have learned a lot from all the replies!
  9. Just the thing I am thinking will happen - an unexpected charge. This is very true. I am already fed up trying to keep track of all these different possibilities. In reality I simply cannot afford a new Stage 3, but trying to save some money is taking any fun and enthusiasm out of the whole purchase I appreciate your words.
  10. I did briefly look into driving to New York, but it was 7 1/2 hours each way. Ugh. All the retailers say on their shipping/policies webpage is that they are not responsible for brokerage, customs, duties, or fees. It seems no one (including the retailers) have a concrete idea what will happen when an item reaches Canadian Customs or when it is handled through a carrier. At any point is seems charges can be added...I have always suspected this (working in a small business for almost 20 years) but I was hoping to find otherwise. I've almost given up on the idea of mail ordering something so large and expensive. I can't keep track of the many variables in terms of final amount, warranty, (a few people mentioned store bad-reviews which I also saw on the 'net) It might not be worth the headaches. But I will keep an eye out for deals. I really appreciate everyone's input on this topic. I discovered a few new retailers and have learned a bit more about pricing and what might happen if I tried mail-order. The CAD price vs. everyone else was a real eye-opener!
  11. A very interesting exercise. A quick look at the Thomann UK (and Thomann USA) site listed their regular price as the same special one I had to ask for from ProAudioStar on their chat line.
  12. It seems like there isn't a rhyme or reason to the charges I might incur. Almost like whoever handles the shipment can add a "charge or fee" with any sort of name based on some vague rules or how they might be feeling... I appreciate all of your replies!
  13. Yikes! That is the kind of stuff I was worried about! I have heard of that term before..."brokerage fee". It sounds like a license to print cash...
  14. Thank you - yes, I did. I was hoping they would be able to do something for me as a very regular customer, but they didn't appear to want to move on the price at all. I even asked about extended financing (24 months instead of 12, but no) That is the only reason why I started to look elsewhere. I do appreciate their 30 day return policy - I have used it before when I succumbed to impulse purchases, but this one purchase in particular I am considering carefully. You bring up some very good points
  15. That is helpful, thank you. I wonder if duty is charged as a percentage?
  16. Thanks so much for this reply - that is my concern, of course. I don't want to go through all this hassle for $200. I don't know if I'm aloud to talk numbers here or not, but I was looking at a savings of about $1,100 CAD. I just don't know any charges I'll get dinged with beyond HST (tax). That is pretty significant to me. I would like to keep the sale local and in person...but that number! Sheesh. Regardless, you have given me something to think about... Thank you.
  17. (My continuation thread:) https://forums.musicplayer.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/2985935/Canadians_Buying_Keyboards_fro#Post2985935
  18. Hi again everyone, I initially began to look into buying a Nord Stage 3 from the USA after starting another post: https://forums.musicplayer.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/2984847/Average_price_for_2nd_hand_Nor#Post2984847 I think I'm able to save a fair bit of money by ordering a Stage 3 from the USA. I understand I will have to pay 13% tax when it arrives, but I am a bit concerned about the vague term "duties" and/or any additional fees that I might incur. Does anyone have any stories to share about receiving musical instruments in Canada from the USA? Will UPS charge a "handling Fee"? (And will that be $50? $100?) I want to be sure of the total amount before I order, but I don't know if there is any way to know that. It's a little unsettling pushing the "buy" button not knowing what the full amount will be in the end.
  19. Thanks everyone. (I will check Full Compass as well...) I did a short "chat" with ProAudioStar on their site, and it looks like I might be able to save quite a bit. I think as Canadians we're getting hosed somewhere...unless stores are desperate for business? What an eye-opener. My question now involves duties, etc. I think that might deserve a new thread. Thank you all for chiming in, without your suggestions I would not have known any U.S. sites to look at.
  20. The price they offer is quite nice! I've never done shipping something so large/expensive from the USA - I always figured the shipping costs will make it prohibitive. Also, whenever I read the words: "import duties or taxes upon receipt" I don't know how to begin. Without knowing what those charges will be means I can't proceed. I wish all that stuff could be known ahead of time...
  21. Thanks again for all the points. I think I will wait for a deal on a Stage 3 Compact. It's a current item, so there's no hurry to buy. I'll just patiently watch and wait...
  22. The seller is listing the Stage2 ex as the 73SW compact model.
