  1. Saving a registration does indeed save effects unit parameters.
  2. You can't have separate effects for each half do a split, the hardware just isn't there. Doesn't matter if the split is done via MIDI second keyboard mode or not. My advice is to get a second board with great pianos. Wes
  3. The second board can be used in a couple of different ways. The easiest, IMO, is to put the VR-09 in "KEYBOARD" mode. Then the lower keyboard is programmed exactly as you would program the left side of a split. Configure the bottom keyboard not to send program changes if doing this. Editing from Mac - not possible. Wes
  4. Follow up: The VR-09 works well with the Yamaha FC-7 as such: 1 - create a pigtail to invert tip and ring 2 - wire a 47K resistor between tip and sleeve 3 - wire a 47K resistor between tip and ring 4 - select expression curve #4 You will get adjustment along the entire length of the pedal, with correct minimum and maximum volume, and a solidly usable section in the middle. The resistor both adjust the maximum volume point (around 22-23K FWIW) and make the pot effectively more logarithmic. I have no idea if this is what's inside the Ashby cable or not. Tip and ring are per the plug that enters the VR09. Wes
  5. Last keyboard - Yamaha CP4. Played its first two gigs this weekend. Went pretty well except for accidentally bumping the EQ and thundering the stage with boogie-woogie bass for half a song. The stage had four QSC subs under it. I thought the bass player had suddenly turned arsehole. Last hardware - Samson short mic stand with a telescopic boom. Just what the doctor ordered for lower Leslie rotors.
  6. Piecing together several adapter cords sounds like a dumb solution. Why not just use a TRS plug and inline jack?
  7. Don't you just need to make a pigtail that flips tip and ring?
  8. I just got an FC-7 with my CP4 the other day. Can't wait to hook it up to the VR-09. It looks like it will be a 1000x time better expression pedal than the M-Audio unit I have been using.
  9. Not redundant at all. Each speaker comes with exactly the amp (and limiter and processing) it requires. Need one speaker? Bring one speaker. Need two speakers? Bring two speakers. Need 27 speakers? Being 27 speakers. Pretty straightforward if you ask me. BTW I use the D-Beam for the thunderclap in Twilight Zone. Makes for cool theatrics Wes
  10. I wonder what those doorbells on the organ are for?
  11. Do you have a DX7, or a DX7II? I'm actually planning to use my II-FD as a lower manual with my VR-09 at some point. I always felt that the original DX7 action was particularly great, I suspect the organ division designed it. BTW, Craig is no longer with us, but you can find him on the Yahoo Clonewheels group. I have been playing my VR-09 quite a bit lately. Between it and my K&M 18880, I have a nice lightweight jam rig. I am fine with the VR-09 keys for organ, my usual rig is an L111, and am starting to be okay with them for rock and roll piano, too. My biggest complaint so far is with my expression pedal. At some point I will buy a Yamaha FC-7, or a Crumar Mojo pedal, to go with it. One thing I have noticed in this thread is that people want to pick this board apart. It's not perfect, but that doesn't mean it's terrible. It's a terrific value for the money, IMO. Besides the Hammond and EP sounds, I also like the transistor organ and many of the synth sounds. I especially like how easy it is to shape the synth sounds to suit the song at hand. Wes

  13. Wow, that's really great! I can't tell you how much I also dig the layout of the KeyB. I'd have to look twice to realize you weren't playing a chop. Wes
  14. Joey's not even a "tone" player if you can use that word. To me, anyhow, what he does is more about harmonic structure than timbre. If you care about timbre, I would think an endorsement from Dr. Lonnie Smith would mean a lot more. That guy has REALLY mastered the sound palette aspect of jazz organ, IMO.
  15. I lost one. My hypothesis is that it wasn't pushed on all the way at the factory. If you glue them on, you will never be able to fully open up the unit for repair. Something to think about. BTW I got a replacement from my dealer for $2. Wes
  16. Do you have the expression pedal function set to expression pedal in the VR-09?
  17. Hey. That's a really good idea!!
  18. I always liked the sound of my crate KX80 (until you hit the limiter), but at 70 lbs, the only place I've put it lately is the classifieds. Get powered speakers that can sit like a wedge monitor. I use and love the Yorkville NX55P. But there are lots of other good choices, Yamaha DXR, QSC K10, etc. My Yorkies sound great, -3dB at 45Hz makes for a very solid piano bass sound.
  19. Can the SK1 clav be controlled by the expression pedal used as a wah? Because that would be awesome.
  20. When you write data to USB, registration data is stored in files named VR09_xxx.UPG and the "deep synth edit" data is stored in a file named VRSYN001.DAT. The xxx in the UPG filename corresponds to the registration set number in the index. The .DAT naming scheme has the unbelievable side-effect of making it impossible to store deep synth edits for two different registration sets on the same USB key. At least on pre-1.03. Maybe they fixed that, too. That would be a God-send. Wes
  21. Thanks, Bob. Sounds like Roland might have quietly fixed that particular gaffe with the 1.03 firmware release. Maybe that's why it delayed? Sounds like I'd better update to 1.03 soon. I'm working on a librarian, and have ideas for how to merge VRSYN001.DAT files when organizing registrations. Moving patches around through a UPG file (and renaming them) is a done deal, but I haven't cracked the internals of the DAT files yet - or the internals of the patches in the UPG files beyond their names. Wes
  22. Now here's the real question: the synth sound you turned into a Sitar. Can you still use the factory sound in other registrations, or have they all become sitars? I haven't really used the iPad app, but ISTR seeing on YouTube that to "turn" a knob you put your finger on the knob and then drag it up or down. Wes
  23. As long as we're talking about this stuff.... What exactly is going on with the keys between the chromatic run and the "one two three four!" on Born To Run? Sounds like he's got his whole arm down on one of the manuals? Maybe both of them? And the percussion...a timpani roll and a snare buzz roll? Man they have such a together sound, it's really hard to pick the elements out.
  24. From an IT guy POV -- an IT guy that works in telecom and needs absolute reliability -- the rig as described in the videos makes perfect sense. Good redundancy, and a fail-safe to a tried-and-true system during a transitional period. BTW, it's nice you're posting a bit more Outkaster. You always have lots to share. My idea of "the sound" of rock keys has been very much influenced by the sound of the E. Street Band. Rock sax, too. I took up tenor saxophone a few years after Born In The USA because I wanted to sound like Clarence. Unfortunately, I never figured out how to get a seat in a rock band before I put the sax away permanently(?) 8 years later. When did you think Roy's piano changed, BTW? You think Ivory is too sterile, or think only a real-deal piano cuts the mustard? I play almost exclusively DPs and I think they sound great, until I play a real piano. Then I feel very frustrated. Happens about once every five years. I console myself by telling myself that nobody can tell the difference in a band mix anyhow. Wes
  25. As long as you guys are all backing up your registrations, would you mind emailing me the files? wes at page dot ca .... I need more data files to check my work on the VR-09 patch librarian I am writing. I promise not to share any registrations you email me...
