  1. According to a couple of different interviews with Mr. Porcaro (one from ProSynth Network, which is a must-see), he had one of the first Micro Composers which had 8 channels, so he basically wanted a system equivalent to 8 Minimoog's.
  2. Hmm. This could possibly be a worthy replacement for our church's aging CP300, which is an absolute bear to play action-wise. I was thinking about the 515, but that action just feels way too heavy and unplayable under my hands. I got a chance to try one a year ago, and I just didn't get along with it at all. It sounded great to my ears, but it was just as difficult to play as the CP300.
  3. That may just be the ticket. Found one on eBay for around $80. Looks like it'll be a cool little interface to play around with as well.
  4. I just switched from Crap-walk to Studio One a year ago (I was using Reason 11 before that). I found it more stable, pretty quick to learn and easy to use, and I love it more. I'd rather not have to decipher another DAW if I don't have to.
  5. Welp, the JL Cooper MSB+ arrived. As great as it may be in a hardware setup, it appears that it can only filter all controllers at once, with no way to filter out a single CC, so that's out. At least, I can try using it with an external sequencer and play around with it. Also, as far as I can see, I can't use MIDI-OX as an I/O device within Studio One, so that's out. Looks like I might be on the hunt for another 88. However, I have a really difficult time playing on any other weighted/hammer action other than my RD1000, or perhaps a MIDIBoard. Anything else feels too heavy, stiff, slow, sluggish, or all of the above. May have to settle for a semiweighted.
  6. Unfortunately, I use a PC, so MidiPipe is out. I may have to try something like MIDI-OX for going the software route. I have the JL Cooper unit on the way, so if that doesn't work, then I'll pursue the software route.
  7. Home recording--I never use a computer live. I'm wanting to use my trusty RD-1000 as my 88-note controller as I've yet to play a digital piano in the last 20 years that has an action that feels as pleasant as this one does, at least to me. However, my DAW of choice, Studio One, has no way of filtering specific CC's, just normal aftertouch, program changes, etc. I've tried many VST filters, to no avail.
  8. My DAW of choice, Studio One, does have MIDI filters on the inputs, but no way to filter a single MIDI CC. I don't use a computer live, just for recording.
  9. Yeah, Studio One doesn't have a way to filter out specific CC's. I've tried some filter plugins, too, to no avail. I did manage to pull the trigger on an MSB+ Rev 2 via the Bay. We'll see if that works when it gets here.
  10. Does anything like this exist? I've been wanting to use my trusty RD-1000 as a main controller, however it was born in an age where Roland were implementing the notorious CC# 123 "All Notes Off" with nearly all of their products. Hardware instruments seem to be fine in not recognizing this, but I can't really use any virtual instruments because of this hiccup. For anyone wondering, when you let go of the last key you play, the RD will send out an "All Notes Off" (MIDI CC# 123) command, which cuts off any sound from many virtual instruments. This is probably happening because the VI's are interpreting that message as CC 120 (All Sounds Off.) I was looking at the Digital Music Corp MX-8 as a solution, but after looking at the manual, it doesn't appear to offer that filter. Any other ideas?
  11. I don't do the cover band thing anymore. When I did, I'd use a beefy, slightly amped Rhodes sound. Then I started getting more confident on acoustic guitar, and for the last 6 months or so until I quit the band, I just played acoustic guitar on anything that didn't have keys. Everyone loved the idea--except for the singer. Go figure.
  12. Couldn't think of a better way to celebrate dropping 100+ lbs over two years, than with my longest run to date (not on the treadmill, though!). The last three miles were a bear, but I loved every bit of it!
  13. The unplugged version of Hunting High And Low is incredible, too.
  14. Agreed! Their first three albums are great!
  15. Got it immediately. The sun always shines on my computer monitor.
  16. Went totally retro with this one. Started out with messing around with a custom synth-guitar/plucked sound I created with Synclavier V. Then, the rest of it just took off above the clouds, so to speak. "Above The Clouds" Above The Clouds.mp3
  17. Pianos 1, 3, and both EP's are my go-to patches, and when that chorus is dialed in just right... MMMmmm!!!! So good!
  18. The Roland RD-1000 will forever be my go-to instrument on a Sunday morning. Our team is just myself, and a couple of singers, one of which plays acoustic guitar. We do a good mix of old and new, mostly the old 80's-early 2000's songs. Depending on whether or not I want more sounds at my fingers from week to week, I may pull out a 2nd board (MODX7, SY77, or Karma) and control that from the RD-1000. We're not about carbon-copying the original arrangements at all. Then again, I usually don't play the same thing twice. Lol
  19. Not if you're using a computer. You'll just need to set up the keyboard and the NanoKontrol inside whatever DAW you plan on using.
  20. Just bought the Octave Cat, now this is coming out. Judging from the sounds, this thing would probably cripple my 3-year-old Core i5 9600K. Good thing I just upped my PC to an i9.
  21. All-in-one weighted keyboards with plenty of controls, for under $1000 USD would include: KeyLab 88 MkII M-Audio Hammer 88 Pro I can't comment on the M-Audio as I haven't played one, but as far as the KeyLab, the controls and build quality are superb, but the action is horrible. The other way to go would probably be a weighted DP with USB-out (if you use pitch and mod wheels, your selection may be a bit limited in terms of your budget), with something like a Behringer X-touch or Korg NanoKontrol for your control surface.
  22. It's free, had to grab it. Not too crazy about the string sounds, but my god, the woodwind/brass sounds are so well done! Just takes a bit of practice playing legato. The timing has to be just right for the effect to work.
  23. Always great to see another DX7 owner here, at least it's great for me. I love mine!!
  24. Just got an SY77 off of Marketplace for $380. It sure is a beast, both weight-wise and sound-wise.
  25. I've only ever used an iPad with a KeyLab 61 MkII, VB3m, and a PreSonus AudioBox iOne (sometimes through a Vent II which is currently on loan from a friend of mine), but only because it's the most affordable way I can get a passable organ sound in my rig when I need one, and I don't play organ that much. Otherwise, my rig would be 100% hardware.
