  1. Sorry to hear this Dan. I hope you find a better job quickly.
  2. I was 12 when the Beatles exploded. Some friends went out and bought guitars, bass guitars, and drums from the local music store. Some friends started a band but no one could sing. I got drafted. I sang in several other bands over the year and learned to play guitar and bass. Quit high school and ran off to be a singer in a rock band. Travelled the tri-state area for a few years then decided to get a "real job". I saw an ad for a Rhodes for sale and bought it. I had it for a month or so and was learning to play by strumming a guitar chord and finding the notes. Some friends that I had played with as kids had a great southern rock band. They called and wanted to add my vocals to the band. The bass player was a good friend and knew about the Rhodes. They said bring your piano. I laughed and said sure. The rhythm guitar was a good singer but weak on guitar and wasn't allowed to turn up his amp. so I played mostly chords and they said that will work. We were played 4 times a week and practiced twice. The bass player, rhythm player and I all sang and we had the best harmonies of any band I have ever been in. I improved quickly playing 6 nights a week.
  3. Is the Soundman supplying the 6 direct boxes? Is he connecting them or does he expect you to do that? Personally I wouldn't go out and buy direct boxes or do the extra setup and teardown. You already have a good working setup. I would respectfully tell him that I would prefer do it that way.
  4. I just bought a MODX7 and have had a Kurzweil PC361 for years. I worried about the reliability of the Kurzweil but I haven't had a problem with it (Knock on wood). I bought the MODX to replace the Kurzweil in my live rig too lighten the load. The Kurzweil has never had a problem.
  5. One of the bands I play with rehearses at my studio. Real drums, amps and vocals through a PA. We are quieter than when I lay tracks by myself. I was tempted to tell everyone to turn up.
  6. I had a night off Saturday and went to see another band. They were the sons of some of my friends. Very talented group in their early 20's. They play originals but blend covers from Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers and Hendrix to name a few. The soundman was one of my former guitar students. I do try to see other bands when I have the chance.
  7. Thank you CowboyNQ. I appreciate your comment.
  8. Well, I ignored the red flags and and got together with some people that wanted to start a new band. I knew the drummer and he is a decent player and a nice guy. I never met the other three. The singer (also had talent) and I had talked and he wanted me on keys and rhythm guitar. About a week before the "practice" a group email says they have a rhythm guitar player that sings harmony coming so I am now on bass. The other guys pick 7 songs to run through to see how it works. The lead guitar says the songs are cool because he has toured and can sing and play anything. (flag #1) Everyone but the lead shows up and about 15 minutes after the agreed time we get a text from the lead guitar saying he is about 15 minutes out. (flag 2) He arrives 30 minutes late and brings a giant rig. We play two songs and his volumes and varying from too loud to too quiet. (3) Now he and the singer start jumping to songs we didn't discuss doing. Play a cars song and the rhythm player has a "synth" patch on his pedal board.(4) Rhythm guitar is good and can sing harmony but he changes the one he is singing every time. The lead guitar can not play and sing anything as stated and hasn't learned all the solos in the songs picked (5). We finish and the singer says what do you think? I said I don't want to offend anyone but we needed to be much more organized, stick to the songs we chose and know our parts when we get here. Drummer agreed. Rhythm and singer didn't say much and the lead guitar texted and said he was out. I should have known it was a train wreck from the beginning. sorry for the long post, I needed to vent.
  9. More love for Sweetwater. I play keyboards and guitar in one of the bands I am with. Thursday night at rehearsal the power supply for my Firehawk pedal board broke. I called Sweetwater Thursday morning to buy a new one. I was connected to service and they said you brought this a month ago it shouldn't have broken. They are sending me a new one at no charge and it should arrive at my house in Western Pennsylvania today in time for a studio session Monday. I am still waiting for the actual manufacturer to respond to me. Great service.
  10. I played a 3 hour gig one week after knee replacement surgery. I wouldn't cancel because it was a club we had been trying to get into for a while. The other guys in the band just pitched in and carried and set up all of my stuff without me asking them to help. The people in the cover band may jump in and help if you ask. Hope you heal quickly.
  11. When I have owned the PA, I have always done what Synthizen2 said. Never took extra money. I just asked that everyone helped carry and setup tear down.
  12. I used to own an Option 5 Destination Rotation. It wasn't bad but I didn't like the ramp speed. Thought it was too fast. Mine was # 4 hand built and was made before they put an adjustment for the speed. In the 70's I used a Mutron Bi-phase. It was pretty cool in the old days.
  13. Dreamchilde, I had the same thing, I believe. I just got a blank screen. I tried again last night and waited longer and it loaded. It took longer to start than I thought it would.
  14. Over the years I have owned two Korg CX3's (version 1),a Hammond M3,Roland VK8, Roland VR 760 and a VR-09. I still own the VR 760 and the Vr-09. I like the feel of the 760 and yes the 09's keys are not as nice to play. When it comes to going out to play I always grab the 12 pound VR-09.
  15. Hi,everyone. I joined the forum a little while ago and have been lurking in the background reading all of the great posts. I am 59 years old on the outside. The inside never grew up. I started playing music at age 12 after seeing the Beatles play on TV. My first job was at a Junior High dance. I was the lead singer. We played out first song, She Was Just 17, in 30 seconds. I sang with various bands and quit high school at 17 to play full time. After several years, I decided to get a real job and continued to play weekends. Over the years I learned to play Bass, Guitar, Harmonica, Mandolin and Keyboards. On a good night I am mediocre on all of these. For about 30 years I settled into the nitch of Rhythm Guitar, Keys and Vocals. One year ago a Drummer friend talked me into coming to a practice with his country band to play Bass. Great guys, with no ego's, so I joined. We play newish country and classic and 80's Rock. Strange combination but it works. I have added keyboards with left handed bass to about half of our songs. I started collecting gear 47 years ago and have way too much to list. My current live rig is a 1978 Fender P-bass with a Jazz pickup added,Motif ES6, Roland VR760 with all three running into an Eden Bass amp with 2-10 and 2-12 Cabinets. Sorry to go on for so long.
