  1. "Starbuck Jones". ( Wife complains often of having a Starbuck Jones. Sweet coffee drinks will do that to a woman.) if it's a group instead of a solo act: Starbuck Jones and the Porn Stars
  2. Oh! And if you go to Pago Pago, go to The Equator Bar at the Trade Winds Hotel and check out the Dr. K sticker on the beer cooler.
  3. Ha, so.....I went to a Christmas party at our new favorite bar in Savannah...Moon River. We are part of the "Quality Assurance" program. It sounds like a heavy responsibility, but we're up to the challenge as it provides $4 22oz beers ($3 at happy hour) and a bunch of perks/free nachos and dinner on your birthday, and an open bar at said yearly Christmas party. I was chatting up the guy next to me, talked music. He said, "Wait, what? You're 'THE' Dr. K?" It appears that in high school they nicknamed their favorite fortified wine "Kessler's" as "Dr. K", and he had texted his old gang of delinquents a pic of my sticker the previous day. So stickers work.
  4. If practicality is the goal, then I'm totally in the Not Worth Fixing lobby. Sombitch kinda heavy. Amps don't need to be that heavy anymore, and they're not as expensive as they used to be. I'd still take a half hour and do a little once-over. Is the fuse blown? Loose wires or blackened parts on the inside? If there are sentimental reasons for the amp, then clearly you should have it fixed. And I'm sad to hear of your loss.
  5. I got a web cam....finally. Here's my youtube page. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-HtltfVT_qDYr35G8I556Q?view_as=subscriber
  6. The Whistleblowers The Placebos (Tag line is, "Yes we know. But You'll feel better anyway.)
  7. That makes sense with the stilted description on their web site-- some translations are just a little off, like stating how much power the cab can "handle" even though it's a self-powered unit. So not Carvin risen from the ashes. But I'd still love to find out which parent company. Like how Sammick makes (or at least used to...) guitars for all sorts of other companies. Not gonna pull the trigger on it until a track record appears, as I don't need another boat anchor; but that Fish-Stick clone would fill a niche for me.
  8. Ladies and Gentlemen; I tripped over this company "Sound Town" while looking for Bose/Fish-stick type gear. Price is right, but there is very little data on this company on this here internet thing.... so I'm skeptical. Any left coasters have any experience with them? Here's the Fish-stick copy that looks interesting: https://www.soundtown.com/collections/pa-speakers/products/carpo-v5pws They have a ton of other stuff on their site so I'm thinking it must be some other gear re-badged as Sound Town. Maybe Carvin rising from the ashes? Cheers, Paul K
  9. Ladies and Gentlemen; My TC Helicon units (VoiceSolo and Harmony G/XT) have only XLR outputs, but appear to be line level. My Carvin AC300 combo amp has XLR inputs, but has a weird intermittent white noise thing that is not gig friendly. The defect, which can't be fixed by Carvin anymore, is apparently in the effects engine which can't be turned off. So I'm bypassing it and the pre-amp by going directly into the Carvin's power amp section via the effects loop input, which is 1/4 inch. The signal should be hot enough as I've done it before with other boxes that have both 1/4" and headphone outputs. Do I need some impedance matcher thing to do this or will a simple Female XLR to male 1/4" cord do the trick? The cord run will be short enough that I'm not concerned with noise from an unbalanced run. Cheers, Paul K
  10. Might have to claim this one for myself: Starbuck Jones
  11. OK, so how much trouble can one get into by sticking these stickers all over town? Asking for a friend....
  12. Oh, baby. I'm in. As long as I don't have to get a real "Dr.K" tattoo....
  13. Ladies and Gentlemen; I've got me a logo, and a thousand stickers are on their way. How cool is that?!? Cheers, Paul K PS evidently I need to do something else to make the pic show up. It's here if'n you want to see it: www.drkmusician.com
  14. Another bass that I'd like but don't need is an early 70's Ricky 4001 to replace the one I sold. Blonde, please. I'd hang it above the couch and gaze longingly at it every day.
  15. I've not played on any resonant floors that I can remember, or at least not often enough to locate the source of the boom. I'd just put your speaker on a chair and have at it. I have had issues with resonant rooms, once with a guitar player with flatwound strings using the neck pickup with his amp's bass control on +5; bastard blamed me for being too loud. So is it the floor or the room or both? Speaker in the corner will help with room resonances, so get there before the drummer does and claim that real estate.
  16. I don't use an amp stand as it's one more thing to schlep from the car. My "Dr K" kick drum shell speaker retains the original kick drum legs, so it tilts back 20 degrees or so. I have a plastic PA cab that I loaded with a 12" delta-lite, and that sits in front of me as a monitor when there is full PA support, or behind me on it's side when I don't have PA support but need more than the single 15" in the "Dr. K".
  17. Here's a non-myth. I try to get to the gig before the drummer so I don't have to trip over all their crap. That, and I get to put my amp in the corner before he/she claims that real estate.
  18. And in a related note, if you do use a pick then a tighter string spacing is way cool. I have a couple 4 strings that I rebooted as 5 strings with Schaller roller bridges set to narrow as they'll go. Work very well with a pick (though i seldom pick up a pick).
  19. Or that whole "tone wood" thing. It ain't a doghouse.
