  1. Dave I was referencing "mono" in that a Leslie, for example my 147, has a single channel mono tube amp into a crossover. Now however, thats where it ends, yes you are correct, the magic is the rotating woofer and horns that fill the room with sound. The SS3 is indeed different in that it starts with a stereo source and does the M/S thing. Vents, internal rotary sims, and others "attempt" to create the swirl(for lack of a better word in my brain) through among other settings, a Left and Right output(in addition to the crossover, eq, etc) Maybe we are getting too hung up on the stereo word??? Why was stereo invented, according to WIKI: Stereophonic sound or, more commonly, stereo, is a method of sound reproduction that creates an illusion of directionality and audible perspective. This is usually achieved by using two or more independent audio channels through a configuration of two or more loudspeakers (or stereo headphones) in such a way as to create the impression of sound heard from various directions, as in natural hearing.[ I think the SS does that(yes with two audio channels) Now as far as the Leslie, how many people know why the Leslie speaker was developed? Leslie worked as a radio service engineer at Barker Brothers Department Store in Los Angeles, which sold and repaired Hammond organs.[2] He bought one in 1937, hoping it would be a suitable substitute for a pipe organ. He was disappointed, however, with the sound in his home compared to the large showroom where he originally heard it. Consequently, he attempted to design a speaker to overcome this. He initially tried making a cabinet similar to Hammond's, but soon concluded that pipe organs produced a spacially varied sound because of the different location of each pipe. He set out to emulate this by making a moving speaker. He tried various combinations of speakers and speeds, and discovered that a single one running at what's now known as the "tremolo" speed worked best. After further experimentation, he decided that splitting the signal into a rotating drum and horn helped accentuate bass and treble frequencies.[3] So he was trying to emulate a pipe organ sound, albeit filling a space with sound. Nothing, as Dave and Aspen say, will replace a real Leslie, my MS 145 is a mechanical rotating system, but it cannot touch the 147 as far as audio sweetness. BUT, my SK2 even with its internal SIM sounds better the the SS than just my K10 or two channels of "stereo" If I had roadies and was in a big band, you bet I would have the real things, but I am my own tech/road guy and lifting Leslies and my AV is a memory.
  2. A real Leslie speaker system is, uh, mono.... but you hear the sound all around, just like an SS3 produces its effect. The stereo Leslie comes from recordings where there are two 180 degree mics on the horn..
  3. THIS, it took me a while to grasp this, as first I had the SS right by me. Then I had the dread overdrive issues because of improper cables and gain structure of mt SM10. Now it resides behind or to the side of me and everybody is happy
  4. It is you seem new here, so if you read other threads or stick around you will find there is a sense of humor here that's not mean or cruel. You seem to have edited some of your posts, so now we cannot see what your question was, so how can some one help you? I know it would be a bear to read all 80 pages, but I am sure your issues have been broached many times, plus Aspen has a wonderful FAQ or , you could PM him your question/s. This is a community of diverse and like minded people who will help.
  5. I guess it depends on how loosely we define a club. Picture this scenario so typical for places down here in the south, a conversation between the bar manager and a patron who is also an "electrician on the side" manager - "well were just about through remodeling this old place, used to be thrift store. The owner wants to book bands here.We didnt include any electricity for the bands, and you know they are going to want more than one outlet for their PA.How cheap can you add some outlets and breakers and such?" joe electrician- surveys layout. "Well look, there is the beer coolers right there by the bandstand. I can come off that circuit and wire up a few receptacles for them. Hell, they dont run much power for their stuff.No need for breakers and grounding stuff.How about $50 bucks for materials and a 50 dollar bar tab one night? Manager - its a deal , lemme buy you a beer. sad but true

Well, I don't dislike the SS, but by that logic you could also call it a miniaturized set of Bose 901s, with or without 350 improvements since 1968, with too much direct sound, too much HTF considerations and that would fail the power burn in test. Stay realistic. Maybe it escaped me that you guys own a SSV3. If not, why does someone who never used or owned a SSV3 feel a vocation to give a professional opinion on it? Tom, opinions are like arseholes, everybody has one
  7. So Theo, you dont care for the SS, a pundit, if you will. REALITY, for me, as well as most others in this thread is it sounds wonderful, fills the bill and the venue, and is portable and lightweight. I am staying realistic.
  8. Aspen, I was going to try to get a jump on the question by going to your website and listening to some videos to see if the question was broached. I thought your NAMM video might lend the answer. SO upon opening the video and watching the first minute or so where you introduce yourself,I remarked to myself, Listen to all the LOUD darn playing on the floor there from the other booths. I had read the floor is loud from all the sounds, and I figured it was coming from other booths, since you were far away from your booth. HAH!!!! It was YOUR booth, I saw the organist rocking away behind you.Now, if that isn't a testimony for your little box filling up a space, nothing is. LOUD and CLEAN!!!! You rock, brother.
  9. Although not a GK, I use a TC Electronics 1-12 Digital Bass combo with great results coming out of the ss sub out. I can also throw a small Rolls 2 way crossover into the signal path and direct the HF to the SS and LF to the bass amp
  10. I have a kc6o I couldn't even use as a personal keyboard monitor right under my butt,turning it up to try to hear anything and it distorted like crazy, sounded like ass, nobody else in the band could hear it. The SS on the other hand fills the stage with sound and fidelity
  11. AFA DBs comments on animated and stereo I was piddling with the kronos piano patches and there is a mono piano patch that is like apunch in the gut. The sound comes directly from the front firing speaker and looses all the enveloping sweet sound karma. So if you really want to compare the SS magic and have a Kronos , compare the mono piano with any of the other ones.It will open your eyes and ears as to what the SS does. I am sure other boards have a mono patch
  12. Possible quirky cables and wonky gain structures were ruining my SS experience. Lately I had distortion and a poor spatial experience so I rebuilt my signal chain. I removed the SM10, ran new cables and inserted a Radial DI to go to the PA now instead of using the SM10 as a splitter. If I bring more than one board I will either use the boards audio ins or grab a little mixer. Todays test with the new setup sounded like it first did, I was ready to sell the SS . Cannot reiterate the cable quality and gain structure issues.

  14. I , for one, admire Aspen for pulling off what he did with his Phoenix Rising product, knowing what he has been through up to this point. It does function for the 80 % stated above,I like the Boutique aspect of the SS. I was guilty of bugging him to design and build a matching sub, until I rethought the big picture, so I can understand the buzz, we are not unhappy with what he built , we just want more !!
  15. The ship w/ our container left Jan 12th, normally I would have it by now and moved it on to SW. But as I know, the ship is anchored off LA waiting in a long line to reach the docks and clear it's cargo. This is bad news for everybody, not to mention our overdue CPS deliveries. In a related story, it appears that Mardi Gras will not have their beads delivered in this year...   16. All these guys who are playing in such LOUD bands where the SS cant "hold up", what is this sound level doing to your hearing? I want to hear MY keys and hear them in fidelity, thus my choice for the SS. ALso I am blessed by playing with bands who have a sensible stage volume, and I fold back some of my keys into the floor monitors. Having said that, I am not trying to dissuade the rockers out there from seeking another solution for loud.You need the tools necessary to fill the stage. At this juncture it seems like only a handful are playing in such a group/venue where the SS "ain't cutting it", there are tons of other amp solutions for these situations.
  17. A bass amp will definitely give you the added bottom, but what it won't do is filter out the low frequencies going into your SSv3 ( < 100 hz), which a subwoofer will do. That saves you from taxing and muddling up the SS with those lower frequencies and gives it a much cleaner overall sound. I am using a TC Electronics Bass Amp, and was just coming out of the SS Sub Out. I purchased a Rolls two way stereo crossover small Rolls 2 way stereo crossover to split the signal coming out of my mixer and its supposed to arrive Friday. It is a small 1/3 rack size, and has a variable crossover point.
  18. you guys who want to use the Behringer or other subs with LO-Z I/Os , how are you dealing with feeding the Hi-Z SS inputs?
  19. I get a weird rattle buzz sometimes, and it goes away if I tilt/lean the SS one way or another,, I have removed the grille and pulled the woofer to see if there is anything, the only thing I see "may" rattle are the power wire leads to the toroid xformer.
  20. Sometimes it pays out to be an early adopter on a product, and take a chance. I am a little down that Aspen "dug in his own pocket" for the first production or so, we chatted offline and he shared things with me as he is doing here on line. I am happy the unit is a success, and the early price is a win win for Aspen(the word of mouth) and those who bought it at the early price. Aspen deserves some financial success again, and peace and tranquility. He IS CPS, a guy really like you and I in most aspects, except I don't have the business acumen to produce a world class amp, nor write a great tube book. Would I love to see a company purchase the rights to his amp so he could retire to another project with a pocketful of money? Yes, as long as he had a major say so in the product after the sale. Thanks Aspen for this product. My back thanks you for the weight, my ears thank you for the sound, my brain thanks you for the aural and sensory experience, without the use of any stimulant.

I appreciate all the work certain people are putting into a wiki type users guide,especially for first time owners and perhaps lurkers afraid to take the plunge. but this amp is really plug and play,and the controls are so minimal that slight adjustments will render satisfying results, some adjustment may be required from venue to venue, but once you trust your ears its set it up and forget.
  22. the email I received stated your PC had to run a minimum of an I5 or better, I7 preferred (Please note that PSP Lotary needs to run on at least a i5-class CPU for crackle-free operation. i7 or better CPU recommended). so that leaves me out..
