  1. Ugly AND stupid... https://www.rondomusic.com/product10318.html
  2. I bought a boogie on Ebay, and it has problems. It had a very ice-picky treble sound, so I got a used EVM speaker to tame it. It sorta helped, but it still didn't work right. Well, I got my tax refund, and the amp is now off in California, getting worked over by Mike Bendinelli, Boogie man Extraordinaire, and apparently, it needs it bad. Somebody had it worked on by a total idiot, who replaced some of pots with others of wrong values, put piles of hot glue in it to hold components in place, and just generally jacked that sucker up big. It is being rebuilt in a major way, and I can't wait to get it back. In the meantime, I still have the EVM. I will be going back to the Celestion Black Shadow, because I liked it better on my first Boogie. I thought I would get a 1x12 cabinet for the EVM and balance the tone with a brighter and darker sounding speaker in combination. But, the EVM is 4 ohm and the Celestion is 8. The amp only has 8 and 4 ohm outputs. How can I run the two speakers together?
  3. Actually, I would call that "stupid" as opposed to "ugly", but that's a matter of taste, I guess...
  4. Have you considered a Quilter MicroBlock 45? It has an stereo auxiliary input. You could mount it on a pedal board, and hook it up to a 1x12 or 1x10. I don't know if you'd think it sounds like a tube amp or not, but it sounds mighty good to me.
  5. Man, this is really yhe end of an era. Kirk Douglas passes away at 103
  6. I went back and found out that the body is made of barrel wood. IT's looks very much like this guy... https://www.amazon.com/Muslady-Electric-Guitar-Polished-Unfinished/dp/B07TPB5NYR/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=strat+body+barrel+wood&qid=1579308179&s=musical-instruments&sr=1-1
  7. Well, I'm not entirely sure. I suspect it's pawlonia. The body is very light in weight, and it has some visible grain. It seems very open pored. Haven't really settled on those yet. I understood that at least some grain fillers are latex-based, which wouldn't seem real absorbent, especially if the stain is water-based. What would you recommend? Also, would you think tru-oil would work for the clear coats?
  8. I have a Kinnetone modded Dunlop GCB95 Cry Baby. They made it rather like the 535Q wah, but without the volume boost. It sounds pretty good to me.
  9. I have a strat body that has never been finished. I want to make kinda translucent/transparent white, like a Mary Kay strat. The wood still needs to have the grain filled, and be sanded smooth. My question is, should I stain it first, or fill the grain first?
  10. I was never in a band that played all that loud. And, nowadays bar owners and waitresses simply won't tolerate a band that makes it hard for them to sell drinks. My go-to set up is a 20 watt tube head a friend made for me, through a 1x10' cab. It's never up very loud, and I never stand near the drummer's cymbals. Nevertheless, a recent hearing test showed I had a significant loss in the 4K-6K range. I think one of the main causes was the time I shot a 30-30 rifle. It was incredibly loud, much more than I ever thought it would be. My ears rang for 3 days afterwards. And, at 66, I am told a certain amount of hearing loss, especially in the high end, is to be expected. I have tje most trouible in definition oif words when people talk, especially in a noisy enviroment.
  11. Steve Vai's JEM & Universe guitars have basswood bodies, at least the ones he plays are, as are Joe Satriani's JS guitars. They ain't that cheap. Basswood is a tight-gained wood, which means it should reflect more vibration than, say, mahogany. But it's very light, so it will resonate more readily than heavier, open-grained woods. I think basswood bodies do tend to be a bit warmers than like maple, which is tight-grained but heavy, and tendds toward brightness. And yes, it's not as pricey as more exotic woods, like rosewood or ebony. But it's not necessarily inferior, just a different flovor.
  12. I've seen Rumble, I believe on Amazon Prime. Loved it. I was aware of the heritage of Link Wray, Jesse Ed Davis, Robbie Robertson. and Redbone. But I did learn quite a bit I didn't know regarding the connection between Native Americans and rock music. It seems to me that rock is rather like Hinduism, or perhaps The Borg, in the way it absorbs and incorporates, the influences of everything it comes in contact with. Anathema to purists, or course, but enchanting to people who find music fascinating in.and of itself.

  14. Grandma once said 'Sometimes you have to hug the people you don"t like so you know how big to dig the hole in your backyard.'
  15. Anybody know how Gilmour liked his Big Muff set? The clip of the guy playing through his sound pretty tasty, and I don't usually like fuzzes.
  16. The only time I ever had a middle pickup interfere with my picking was on a Gibson SG Classic. My pick hit that middle pickup all the time. It was such a pretty thing, creamy white with gold hardware, I truly hated having to get rid of it. I never had that problem with a strat. I don't use the middle pickup by itself much, but it can be a kind of secret weapon for me, if I'm playing with another guitarist who is using a strat. I might use it then to keep from sounding too much like the other guy. I hate for two guitars to sound too much alike unless we can arrange not to play the same position in the neck, or play synchronized parts. Otherwise, it just sounds like a mess to me. And, playing jams, which is all I do these days, you don't get to arrange guitar parts much.
  17. Did a little research, and found this on Gilourish.com. "While EMG recommends placing the pickups close to the strings, David preferred them as low as possible to emulate the output and tone of his passive single coils."
  18. Does anybody know how high or low Gilmour sets his?
  19. I got the full-bull Gilmour rig in Goldie, the EMG DG20. 3 SAs with the EXG and SPC. I was never that interested active electronics, but I was thinking about Gilmour' has one of my favorite strat tones I had the money, and when I saw the DG20 for that price, I decided to pull the trigger. Frankly, the whole guitar is a total expression of G.A.S. I'm not playing with a band these days, and going to jams is getting pretty stale, so I don't need for another axe. I just wanted it. Waste of money, actually. I was thinking about trying to find a candy apple red strat with a maple neck, just to have it look more like DGs. What's really sad is, I don't really like strats all that much, and if I got the red one, I'd have 3 of them, the white Hendrix, Goldie, and the red.
  20. Jesse Ed Davis, Rhino Rhinehart, & Mick Ralphs
  21. How low do you have your pickups? What is the distance between them and the strings?
  22. The only way I could go is if they offered full ride scholarships. IT's just too expensive.
