  1. It was only yesterday that I remembered that he had one public-facing mailbox, he used it in connection with a long-lived project. https://mikeriversaudio.wordpress.com/mackie-hard-disk-recorder/ He may have been paying homage to an Ampex 16 track with that email address. When we realized that he hadn't been posting I thought that we could bring him back with the longest thread of posts that were subtly but demonstrably wrong on a range of topics from traditional music to AES papers. I thought that would be irresistible. If you think of forums as a neighborhood, we were lucky to have him close by. He is missed.
  2. I appreciated GovernorSilver's link to the Corp site. This link suggests that they can be pretty agile: https://www.hawaiibusiness.com/2018-ceo-mark-fukunaga/ This link might illustrate some of the differences between the ways they think about businesses and the way that Gibson did. (not naming names, but, you know...) The usual way that we think about MI and Pro Audio businesses is what does this mean for the parts of the US retail and distribution system like GC, etc. I think that this is a much longer range strategy that engages the Pacific Basin.
  3. I am not questioning this, but I haven't experienced this or heard this complaint before. I will say that there has been an extraordinary consolidation in disc manufacturing that has tracked the rise of streaming services. If you don't need to put a lot of discs into retail at the same time you don't need as many plants. Even companies that acquired the castoff plants of labels have been acquired. It is a shrinking business.
  4. I was in and out on the presentation. They started up the candy-colored iMac without using the accessory that I associate most with that machine. (Picture attached. I've been going through my folks things and I still feel guilty about putting them into that machine.) I have a gripe that they talk video and color technologies with credible depth and sophistication but they buzzword and cheapen the language for audio technology. My teeth hurt when they said in minute 45. "Its sound ...deafening."
  5. Clipped from YouTube: REDESIGNED MACBOOK PROS, NEW AIRPODS, PRO MAC MINI. no new Pro Mac Mini Beats me why it was in the YT channel stream.

  7. Solving the upside whichy-way dilemma (especially when I am crawling, squinting and holding a phone flashlight) is just about enough to earn that most "nicest connector"-ever honor. But just when I think that I have it all figured out I find something else. I found this resource while looking to qualify a cable for a power task. https://learn.adafruit.com/understanding-usb-type-c-cable-types-pitfalls-and-more/cable-types-and-differences Yes, USB-C is a universal connector, not a protocol. There's no way standardizing on a connector will allow for one adapter to rule them all - a cell phone adapter is simply not going to power a laptop. But, it would be cool that all those little things that take up a few watts could all use the same adapter, and a beefy laptop adapter would work with all laptops. Specifically, my confusion was between 5A and 3A cables. That was a finer point that I missed. That's why I find myself documenting what I bought.

  9. Craig, wouldn't MIDI-able applications like lighting and show control suggest that somebody should get you into a wearable sooner rather than later? Stuff like this, and I suspect others: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/luminair/id920440588
  10. Ease that troubled mind - Fresh from the Windows Experience Blog "1. The new design and sounds are modern, fresh, clean and beautiful, bringing you a sense of calm and ease." If only it was a short hop from beautiful sounds to sophisticated audio drivers. I suppose that we will find out on October 5.
  11. Well before you do that you might spend some time with the Advanced settings. You can enable the Beta channel or the Developer channel. That might update your Chrome version ceiling. Check this as well. Linux isn't installed automatically, it is an option. https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/9145439?hl=en
  12. My Chromebook is 4 years old this week. It was a refurb that I got for around $170. This thread has a place in a music-oriented forum because Cubasis 3.x now runs on Chromebook. yup. https://www.steinberg.net/cubasis/update/ I learned that from the dreaded FB ad in my feed yesterday. It's not the first. I can make Roland Zenbeats work with a class-compliant USB interface running as an Android app. I don't do that often because it does not work well on my device. I guess that there is a Cubasis for Android too. Chrome hardware has usually been underpowered - deliberately. The devices were designed for battery life. The "instant on," "start working almost immediately" aspect is a satisfying part of the experience and I still like it. Okay, now for the bad news. There comes a time when your device will no longer receive updates. Dan's device is closer to that time than mine is https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en Mine also runs Linux in a window and that has been great. So if you are planning for the future. Look for a device that has 8GB of ram. Mine has 4GB and is okay for now but mine runs out of road next June.
  13. I didn't know anything about Richard Dawson before this thread but I now think he is pretty interesting. So, thanks OP Strays Dave. I think Craig's thoughts about different treatments are borne out with the Jogging video. Craig's treatment would have been different I'm sure. I think that I look in here often to get ideas and this thread provided that. He follows a folkie tradition of writing songs that owe something to old texts and stories. Obviously, the Jogging video is a modern take on that. Contemporary anxious laid-off worker contemplating MacMansions and Beta-Blockers (nice tie-in with "Fight or Flight" themes), self-referential Eye of the Tiger riff, legit hooks that use the word paranoid, exploring themes of isolation and indifference. It's a pretty full plate and it works pretty well and it feels authentic. The wiki page for Dawson mentions the Watersons specifically Mike Waterson as an influence and I can definitely see that. It's a kind of unpretty folk tradition. re: Chip and Wesley Willis I assume that we are thinking of the 'are we laughing at him or with him' angle. Yes, there is an outsider aspect to this. The older I get the more respect I have for people who make art because they have too. They have something that they have to communicate. Based on what I have seen online I believe that he is a self-taught guitarist and he is probably wrecking his hand. But I also believe he is hearing stuff in his head.
  14. There's about 4 minutes of video of him working in his Black Ark studio which is helpful and manic. Roots Rock Reggae - Inside the Jamaican Music Scene (1977) There is currently a link on YT (you know - 'yo, check out this midi chord pack'). It starts at 08:45 if the link is scrambled. The effect that he is goofing with is thought to be a preproduction MuTron phaser. See what you think. There's a chatty discography at redbull: https://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2014/02/lee-scratch-perry-album-guide I totally did not get dub music when it was a thing in the 1970s. I see where it fits now.
  15. I hadn't heard of the investor. They were one of the firms in the 2005 WMG IPO and they have a number of entertainment and media interests. The chairman is the richest guy in the smallest state. Looks like an unflashy and established partner with some long-lasting relationships - so, probably a good match. Their statement is careful: https://www.provequity.com/news/providence-agrees-to-invest-in-sweetwater (I've used Sweetwater for years, and I don't hate them. I would be really surprised if they went into retail.)
  16. I am imagining a hellscape future with AI training on Temp music to avoid paying another sync license ever. But my real theory about Luna is that it is a pincer action with Apple Logic on the other side for shaving marketshare from Pro Tools supporting an eventual private equity placement.
  17. Not to worry, even people making digital mixers these days are making a point of them being "Analog" in the biggest font they can manage. Pay no attention to that USB. "Onyx Series Premium Analog Mixers with Multitrack USB" https://mackie.com/products/onyx-series-premium-analog-mixers-multitrack-usb or "Hybrid Analog/Digital Mixer" https://www.korg.com/us/products/drs/mw_2408_1608/ (okay, I will admit that I was curious about these.)
  18. The essay reminds me of the parable of the blind men and the elephant, but in a good way. It reveals some of the interdisciplinary approaches to neuroscience and music. You can find active academic pursuit of these interests at research institutions all over and maybe next door to you. The "tags" at the bottom of the essay indicate they know where this leads - "Music" "Cognition and Intelligence" and "Neuroscience" Many institutions are calling developing programs in this field Cognitive Neuroscience. The academic departments that were once silos are now looking for better answers in collaboration. So, if you take participation from Music, Linguistics, Neurology, Psychology, Computing / Data Science and even Math you can make more sense of what goes on between our ears. Each of the disciplines brings a bundle of interests. (incomplete list, imagine arranging these sort of like a Circle of Fifths) Music - music education and music therapy and voice Linguistics - mind / brain / behavior, coding rules, and vocalization Neurology - signals and communication and their underlying mechanics Psychology - perception and behavior Data Science - models, relationships between variables, machine learning Math - patterns, intervals, symbols A long time ago I tried to sell our old pal Bruce on this area. Why would we say "Turn The Lights Down Low"? By Bruce Swedien, Posted December 15, 2006 in Sound, Stage, and Studio https://www.harmonycentral.com/forums/topic/104154-why-would-we-say-quotturn-the-lights-down-lowquot/ "Forumites...... Why would we say "Turn The Lights Down Low"? Bob Marley wrote song about that very subject... Hmmmmmm..... Bruce Swedien" In that thread he was speculating about the unintended effects of connecting visual and auditory stimulus. I will admit that I was most interested in perhaps learning something about Bruce's experience of sound from exposure to one of those academic programs.
  19. That's not true: https://nypost.com/2021/05/13/how-rebekah-jones-peddled-lies-about-florida-covid-19-deaths/ Your media is horribly corrupt. God, what a mess of an article. Don"t your news distinguish AT ALL anymore between 'reporting' and 'editorial'? ... In US print media it is often flagged by location. There is an Opinion "bug" over the headline.
  20. infowars is a fraud on a lot of levels, but the response to that particular video will be - "They are just aggregating local press reports. That can't be disputed." They are certainly playing up the fear to suit their own purposes. So - The vaccines have a very small but reportable incidence of vaccination thrombocytopenia. You can search that term. The incidence is reported in the _teens per million doses. UK was reporting ~14 cases / 1M Covid-19 also is associated with thrombocytopenia and the mechanism for that reaction is still under study. The reason that some people may have died after the vaccination is that the typical medical intervention was exactly the wrong response. The guidance after the "pause" in the J&J was to strictly avoid Heparin based therapies. https://newsroom.heart.org/news/guidance-on-treatment-for-rare-blood-clots-and-low-platelets-related-to-covid-19-vaccine The treatments and the routine monitoring of patients is now part of the followup. and another thing.... The US does not offer the AZ vaccine that the UK reporting features. It is approved in Canada for Dan. The people who do best with any medical encounter are those who have a supportive environment and open communication with their physicians. Not everybody has that.
  21. No. It's the information virus. FR24 tracked this to Facebook and medical disinfo sites. "Viral publications distort CDC announcement on COVID-19 PCR test " https://www.fr24news.com/a/2021/07/viral-publications-distort-cdc-announcement-on-covid-19-pcr-test.html People are deliberately f'ing with us. It is evil.
  22. It has clearly been untidy and confidence shaking. They have to clean this up. I hadn't considered the angle that CDM hinted at - that perhaps an upcoming app store version was suggested by some of the changes. That would be a positive development and a potential source of funding for the project.
  23. There's a fairly nuanced take on this in a post on CDM, fwiw. Peter Kirn's view seems measured to me. https://cdm.link/2021/07/audacity-makers-clarify-data-usage-and-theres-not-reason-to-dump-the-editor-yet/#disqus_thread Starting Points: The changes are effective with the next version. The language might have been sub-optimal and they refer to it as a draft. Audacity has attempted to clarify on their Github: https://github.com/audacity/audacity/discussions/1225 I respect anybody's right to say that they don't approve of the terms.
