  1. Fantastic, Carlo! That's why I don't own a piano. In my best Wayne Campbell..."I'm not worthy."
  2. Carlo, Home on the Range is an old cowboy tune. I was asked to jazz it up for a client. Here's how you usually hear it.
  3. 29 secs is all I get. Yea, that's me on harmonica. Was that funny or what? When was the last time someone asked you for a jazzy version of Home on The Range? That was for a restaurant...
  4. Reharmin' in the real world... Home on the Range
  5. I'm with you, Sue. I haven't played a gig in 12 years and haven't played any gigs of standards in 20 or more. I've forgotten these tunes and have had to dig out the originals to see how they went and then listen to these reharms. It's been really good for me. For the past 12 years I've been doing the ad music biz and haven't played anything that I haven't written for a decade and the gig forces you to write goofy shit, but I enjoy it believe it or not. I play the gig off, but in reality, it's a very demanding job. Now I've been getting out the real books and thinking about these tune again when I have 5 mins. and I thank you guys for the inspiration to do it.
  6. Steve, that was great. Loved it.
  7. George and Mildred had saved all their lives for a 2nd Honeymoon vacation in Hawaii. You can only imagine their delight to find a young Bobadohshe in the hotel lounge playing his rendition of the local favorite..... Aloha 'Oe
  8. Here's a 'lil something , just to contribute. In another thread someone asked what else you could play instead of a m7b5, so I put up a piece of "everyone's favorite" Blue Freakin' Bossa Nothing crazy, but maybe a useful treatment for someone. I'll try and put something else up with audio sometime, but hey I'm lovin' what you guys are doing here.
  9. Everything is working for me, but I'm starting to notice that with each new post, I suck a little worse.
  10. It'd be nice if T. Garvin would stop by sometime. I met him years ago in Richmond when I was doing a gig with some friends of his. He's the stuff. Love that tune "Mitch" of his. Smart dude. He's like Bill Holman or something.
  11. Thanks for the replies, guys. I enjoy reading your takes on how you play and what you want out of a tune. You guys inspire me. I feel like Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets when he tells Helen Hunt, "you make me wanna be a better man."
  12. No, it's not really new to me, but I'll still find roots that way all the time. It will take me places that my ear wont take me most of the time. Like with the same approach, it might make me think, hey maybe I'll try some kind of polytonal mumbo jumbo and using the same roots go: http://www.bellmusicproductions.com/clientdownloads/mty.jpg but now I'm seeing a Bb triad with 1 on top and subbing 2 for 3 over a Gb triad w/5 in the bass to a C triad over a E triad but I'll sub -7 for 1 to a D triad over an Eb and I'll sub 2 for 3 again. It's a good way for me to find places to go. Guys like SK, Marino, Dave, and Beeboss can do that without thinkin' about it and just go there. Me....I've still gotta think about it, try and understand what's happenin', get my ear use to it, and under the fingers. I've gotta a ways to go. Fun stuff; this music.
  13. My wife e mailed me this today and in her subject line she'd typed "can you imagine?", but the sad thing is I can remember these days when I was a kid. I had to answer my folks with a Yes Sir/Yes Mam, as well. http://www.j-walk.com/other/goodwife/images/goodwifeguide.gif
  14. I can accept "I do it all by ear" as a valid answer. Just listened the the mad rainy day. You ARE mad. Great, SK as usual.
  15. What are some techniques that you guys use when you're looking at something to spice up a tune? For instance... you can see where a melody is going and what chord it's going to land on and you reharm those pickup notes. Just for an easy example, lets say Misty. You see a Bb7 written and the notes in the melody Bb G to D with a EbM7 chord symbol. So my target is the EbM7 with the D in the melody. So I have two notes to deal with, Bb and G. To find roots for them, the easiest thing is to just go chromatically into the EbM7. I want the roots to move contrary to the melody(that's not carved in stone), so that gives me Db to D to the Eb. So this time, I'm gonna play: LH Db Ab F RH Eb G Bb LH D A F RH C E G LH Eb Bb F RH G A D I went chromatically into the Eb, but I could have used whole steps, m3s, M3s, 4ths, 5ths intervals to move the roots into the Eb and picked my scales containing the melody notes. You can obviously do this with more than just 2 pick up notes and with any tune and it'll always work. What are some other things that you guys have at your disposal.
  16. Hey sk...the rainier day file can't be found it says....can you re-up? I gotta have that one to put in your file.........
  17. That best is Johnny Bowtie's. http://cdbaby.com/cd/bowtiebarstow
  18. I remember that girl from ipanema reharm thread we had. I took the liberty and redid Tom's bridge. i thought it was kind of cool, not too crazy and maybe fun to blow over on a wedding gig that I wont play any more. I wrote the changes down but I never did do a realization of it, but I thought I'd do something like this with it.
  19. Thanks, guys. Jim with all that NC soul in those fingers and vox of yours, you could make anything feel right. yea, the drums are hot in the mix. that's what they told me to do. Mix 'em hot, up front, dry as a bone/ in your face for the demo and then send all the tracks and midi so they can mix it as they choose and swap out different snares and kicks, as they want. I don't even know what the mix will be yet. Mike...it's sounds good here. Tell me how you did the "2" snare. Is that the sample or did you do it? Either way, I love it. Nice, thick, and paddy. I might have pushed the low end a little, but that's so subjective. Good stuff!!
  20. Sue, you kill me! Hey...and you know if you ever need anything hosted for any reason, just e me. Mi casa "sue" casa.
  21. Damn, Carlo! Jeez... you play so well. Wonderful!! And Beeboss...killer!! Don't be such a stranger. more, more!
  22. bobby, just dl flip4mac and you can play them with qt.
  23. Here's another link to Sk's rainy day .
  24. Love the reharm, Steve! I remember you showing me about 30 years ago the A/Bb C/Db Eb/E F#/G ( all the triads have 3 on top) thing with that tune. You bad mofo you.
