portable multi-track recording

Recommended Posts

I am Sound Technology Degree Student who is currently writing a dissertation on "The Effects of Portable Rerecording Technologies on the Recording Industry." I have posted this topic in order to request a little assistance in finding engineers who have used this technology to "record where no man/women has recorded before." An example of the type of person I am looking for is Lynn Fuston. He travelled to Samoa (an island in the South Pacific) to do a multi-track recording of a Samoan children's choir. He had to bring (and carry) basically everything with him, except 110V power. Pretty crazy, huh? I would be extremely grateful for any info/connections you might be able to pass on. Okay man, this ain't the jungle but it was HOT. I one time had to finish a project in the back of my '66 Mustang (no joke). I did a session the night before on location and was using borrowed gear which had to be back the next night before 6 pm. I was a college kid (this was in the early '70's mind you) working at a job that the boss was cool enough to let me run power cords out to the back parking lot to my car. All this so I could finish this cats mixdown (doing 4 track back then, to the duce). The mix was being sent to his brother-in-law who happened to be one of the guys who did the original "Soul Man".....Sam & Dave. Anyway, nothing happened for the artist, but it was a wacked out experience for me to talk about nearly 30 years later! I now just wish I had a picture showing the machines and mixer all in the fastback, with orange power cords hangin' out the window. Come to think about it, I do see the picture! Good luck.

For a long time I was into live binaural recording. Although not multi-track, here is a good story: The mics I used were of my own design as you couldn't get anything like the Core Sound units that are around today. I was interested in recording surf. Since the mics were in my ear canals I had to remain still for the duration of the recording and ignore induhviduals asking me dumb questions. The longest time I spent standing and "staring out to sea" to get a good recording was 45 minutes. That was hard.

I've used a DAT machine and two AKG 414's to capture audio elements for an NPR piece. I pulled my Jetta alongside a highway intersection, clamped one 414 on the front part of my roof-mounted bike rack, the other on the back end of the rack, and ran about 5 minutes of tape. I've also used a similar setup to record the inside of the car as it was being driven to use as sound effect for a drama being broadcast on a local radio-reading service for the blind. I taped the script to the steering wheel, started the DAT machine, and drove up and down a small runway outside of some company building, reading the script and timing my shifts and turns.
I've upped my standards; now, up yours.
